ETHANOL
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 02:48 PM »
There is a good discussion on the Maine site about ethanol. It's been going on since Jan. 10th. Are there any other state sites talking about this fuel additive and what it's done to their small engines?

So far we haven't had to deal with Ethanol blends in Canada.
What issues are you Yanks having?

Here in Wisconsin we have been forced to use Ethanol in the southeastern part of the state for many years. It causes you small engines to run hotter which can cause pre-mature failure. If I can ,I drive 25 miles out of my way to get "THE GOOD GAS". This is a debate that will become heated here on IceShanty. You will have the Pro's and The Con's. I for one am totally against it. Most of our air pollution comes from Chicago on " the trade winds" blowing from the south. Do yourself a favor and run good gas in ALL your small engines. It will save you big bucks down the line. Just my .02 cents.

Well, the judge is still out here in Saskatchewan.... we started back in 2002 and as of 2006 we are at 7%, I think the goal is 10% by 2010. I haven't heard of anyone really having problems here.

I do remember back in the day a lot of my friends being pretty upset that they had to burn unleaded fuel in there cars. Can't really remember what the issues were there but i do remember the Ol' Coffee Row being pretty chocked

I guess time will tell

Like I said. The pro's and con's. Started here at 10% and still the same.

One of the biggest cons is that alcohol attracts water and this can cause phase separation with 2 stoke mix.
Because oil and water don't play well together, you can have water with enough alcohol for the engine to run but no lubrication.
This equals expensive engine damage.   Mix your fuel in small batches to avoid this problem.

In Iowa this grain tainted gas is subsidized and cost less at the pump. Thank goodness we still have the choice and can buy plain unleaded.
I sell and service small engine equipment and have for almost 40 years now. I don't want to kick this can around the block with anyone.
My advise ...( take it or leave it )  DO NOT USE IT IN ANY OF YOUR SMALL ENGINES .

If and when ethanol is introduced to your area change your gas lines to tubing that well hold up.

Ethanol is very hard on carb diaphrams and other parts. I want to try some of the new Marine Stabil (Aqua color) but havn't been able to find it yet, guess I'll have to special order it. Its supposed to be design for ethanol.
