scouting pike
« on: Jan 13, 2015, 11:50 AM »
I finally found a clear lake, ( others were cloudy), I am new to spearing as of last year and started in late feb.  We were pretty successful in 5-7 feet of water, and got a lot of big females, both in our shacks, and on traps. A guy I have met online, says he likes to spear in 15-20 ft., as long as he can see bottom. My question is, for scouting. are the fish closer to shore during egg laying time? and deeper before? I am going tomorrow , back to my clear lake, and set up shack , as well as tipups in various depths for scouting purposes. but I just wondered if depths targeted  coincided with the spawn. thanks If so , this will change my thoughts on fishing, in general, I used to go gun-n-running with a vexi for pans, but always put tipups in the shallows, whatever the season was. thanks, How do you guys scout a new lake/

In my experience, 5 to 10 fow with some weed structure adjacent to deeper water is productive throughout the winter. A lot of people prefer deeper water though
You may call me crazy, but crazy catches fish!
