wax worms or articical on tip ups
« on: Jan 22, 2019, 08:15 PM »
I knows minnows are a better bait for perch and crappies
but where I live you have to travel some to get them....

I had one guy tell me he had pretty good luck with the
salted minnows,But I was doubtful..I would appreciate
any advice onthis,,I never have really been much of
a tip up user..Targets will be perch or crappies..

Thanks for any advice you care to share with this old fart..
too cold ....aint going out there..

Light leader and teardrop with a few waxworms will work for panfish and perch on a tipup.i use them to locate and find which way specks are traveling.when i get a hot tip up hole for specks i go over and jig that hole.

chunks of night crawler work great.  gulp minnows work for me in summer, so should work in winter too.

I have caught trout using a waxworm on a tipup.   I imagine you could catch perch or crappie that way.

Bait on tip-ups or artificial?

Bait. Depending on what you are targeting, you can use waxworms, mousies, dillies, mealworms and nightcrawlers.

Just remember that the amount of bait on the hook will determine what you can catch. Too much bait will only feed smaller fish as they pick it off the hook.
Too little bait might deter larger fish, as they won't see it as being worth the energy expended.

I've had success with half a dillie on my tip-ups for large sunfish. Will also work for perch, trout, crappie, bass and pickerel.

I would suggest brining a jigging rod & reel setup for artificial lures, to be used while waiting for tip-up action.
You may find that you will catch more fish jigging that on tip-ups.
