depends on what day it is. if you get a good blue gill bite all you need is maggots. if you get into a good crappie bite than waxworms work best. if the bite is slow than i would use waxies. personally i would rather have waxworms.

RED spikes!!! On my lake they catch way more fish than waxworms...but I do love fishing waxies!

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

I always have both with me, but the spikes last longer on the hook (i usually end up pulling them off the hook when they look waterlogged and i think they may not be giving off alot of scent anymore). Waxworms are more of a big hunk of meat dangling there though, i feel each has their own moment and often switch back and forth in a day of fishing.

Waxies for me. Bigger bait = bigger fish. A buddy of mine only uses spikes and I use waxies. He catches a lot of lil ones while I catch larger fish. The catch rate is about the same but he has to sort through a lot of dinks. For Crappie, definitely use wax worms.

I pretty much quit using wax worms for bluegills and only use spikes and it makes a world of difference. I still use waxies for crappies though.

Mousies are maggots of the Drone fly. They are called Mousies because thet have a little breathing snorkle on what is actually thier front end that resembles a mouses tail.

I started using Spikes last year and love them.  They are easier to keep over a longer amount of time, I get 2,000 and that will last me the whole ice season.  Spikes also last longer on the hook.  They have a tougher skin and can often times catch a couple fish for each spike.  I use treble hooks when fishing for Crappies so I put on three spikes to increase the size of the offering.

I haven't had mousies for years. I order spikes and waxies. This will be my first year with red maggots.

I prefer spikes because I normally fish plastics and if I get into an area that has picky fish I will stick a spike on the plastic for a little scent. Spikes are easier to keep alive, don't have to worry much about them. I just throw the puck full in my pocket then put it in the shanty, when I get home I throw the puck in the fridge and forget about it until the next trip.

Thanks very much, Guys.

Now, do you raise them yourselves, and if so, how do you start them?  If you buy them, how do you keep them?

I just ordered 1000 maggots mixed red and white for about 10 bucks. I recommend that its a heck of a lot cheaper then buying bait at the store.

Still I think it would be cheaper considering you get about 25-30 spikes from a bait shop for 2 bucks a pop. I've probably easily spent 20 bucks on spikes and waxies this winter already.

I like spikes they seem to hold up alot better than waxies and when the bite is tough their smaller size seems to work best

If you find some fellow ice fisherman to share with, I just ordered 5000 mixed colored maggies and cost me $40 to my door.  Including shipping they were $8 per thousand.  Obviously the more you order the cheaper they are.
