go to rollaway bay, its producing well this year. go to the local bait shop and ask also, depending on depth, fish som shiners close to bottom and other 1-2' under ice.

4-8" of snow on top of 1-2" of ice is about as bad as it can get.  I'd rather it all broke up before the snow.  We'd end up with a lot more ice in following few days.  @)

Could not possibly make any recommendations at this time.  I would not go out on the ice anywhere near here at this time.  Now, one week from now, may be a completely different story.
If you are in Hammond, drive down to the lake and check the ice.  Be careful.

Loved the pictures fishforpike. I grew up fishing Wheathouse bay, winter and summer. Thought I was smart in my early twenties and headed South to get away from it all, turns out I wasn't smart enough I now live on the South edge of the Lake Ontario Snowbelt and boy does it snow. The fishing here is good, it just doesn't start as early. Enough jibberish I just wanted to say thanks for the memories and hope you guys up North have a great season and stay safe.

No reports of safe ice in surrounding areas.  Definately no safe ice on Black Lake at this point.  Next week may be a different story, as FishForPike stated.  We see open water where we are located today, and the ice has tried to lock up three times.  Starting Sunday they are calling for single digits at night four days in a row.  Our guess would be that Black Lake will be safe for fishing in areas of no current or pressure ridges next week.  All depends on the snow accumilation...hopeful ly lack thereof.

Like was said - call Chapman - he report just a couple of days ago - read through the posts, look at the weather forecast and history - you will get the idea.
I drove the length of the lake yesterday,.  A lot of open water and some bays are froze up.  We have are about to get some good ice-making weather.

You guys headed for Black Lake later this week - the ice is marginal in the "good" areas.  Black Lake has current throughout.  Be careful, especially near the points coming out of the bays and other areas of current.  If you don't know the lake, stay where there is, or has been, other traffic.  Just my early ice recommendation for Black Lake.  Early ice and late ice and mid-winter ice claims unaware fishermen every year.  No deaths in the recent past, but getting wet through the ice ain't no fun.  Be prepared.

The whole ice fishing community is like no other and pulling into a lake first thing in the am with nothing but people venturing out in the ice is a thrill like no other. Good luck bud

There was alot of traffic last year for sure.  Black Lake was one of the only places with consitent ice throughout the season, although it came a little late, and left really early. :) I think alot of us are being silent currently because this snow is really effecting ice conditions, and we want everyone to be safe, and not get ahead of themselves.    Update for Black Lake : Snow is still coming down, and we have over 16" of snow.  Slushy ice conditions out front of us here.  We were told there was a good five inches of ice above Edwardsville measured before the Snow hit, and that is the most ice we have had reported.  People were also fishing MileArm and Rollway Bay.  These are the most inconsistent Ice Conditions we have seen in years.  If you head this way, and do not see anyone fishing, it is for a reason.  Even though we are having cold nights, snow insulates like a blanket, and cannot penetrate through to the ice.  Very iffy.  Will update as often as possible.  Stay safe everyone.

We dont have alot of different info to report.  We have been told that about 4 inches of black ice was measured on Rollway Bay, just today.  Another good inch of white ice on top, covered with about 6 inches of snow.  Do NOT go past, or even near the point if you are heading there.  It is important for everyone to know the only places people are fishing on Black Lake are above Edwardsville, Mile Arm, and Rollway.   More ice cannot be made until most of the snow is cleared off the ice.  Stay safe everyone.

Miserable day... Snowed like crazy... I was on rollaway at daybreak and the slush was hardened on top of 4" of good ice. By 2:00 when I left it was a chore dragging sled through the slush... Id say a good 3-4" o slush... Still a lot of snow in spots that haven't been traveled... Very slow bite... Managed to put a few on the ice for dinner but most fish were just looking and very lethargic... Gonna wait until you can get out to the channel before my next trip there...  :(

Fished milearm today. About 4" of ice, slushy on top and lots of snow on the slush. Caught a handful of crappie, and dink gills. Had a couple of flags, but didn't land them. A few guys next to us had a few pike. Someone was riding a sled around, not sure I would be.

Update for Black Lake:

There is very little snow on the "wider" part of the lake.  We checked the ice out front of us this morning.  Bearing in mind that the ice conditions will be varied depending on where you go--up to 6 inches of solid ice was meassured where snow slushed up and froze all the way through.  In some areas, the ice is double layered; with only 1.5 inches of black ice underneathe.  With the freeze forecasted, ice conditions should improve more overnight.  For those wanting to get away from the crowds of Mile Arm and Rollway Bay; out our way there is a nearby camp road that has been plowed straight to the ice, with easy access and parking.  Will update again when there is change.  Be safe everyone.

Maybe - I was on the lake checking ice this afternoon - Chapmans posted a report that was pretty good and I agree with.  In general it's improving.  -2 right now - if there is/was any areas of two ice layers with water between - they will be one after tonight.  Just be careful - stay where there is no snow and check often with your spud - take a buddy along that help you out if oyu get in trouble.  My buddy today was a 200 ft. rope - I found 6" (4 white and 2 black) where I found 2 on Saturday.

Good advise.
I changed my mind when I got up this AM.  Just to be real though, an ATV going through the ice at Rollaway is not an unheard of event for that area.  There a few very dangerous spots around that area at almost any time of the ice season.  Black Lake has some current - more like a big shallow river than a lake.
We got 4+ days above freezing and some rain coming.  It'll get cold and the ice will be better, in the end, for all this warm weather.

Hit rollway bay yesterday from 9:00am till dark. 15 tip ups and jigged. I got 2 small racer pike, and we also lost 1 pike. Jigged up 8 keeper crappies and one perch. Threw back alot of dinks, but it made for a good day. Can-Am side by side was through the ice about 100 yrds away, glad everyone is okay. They worked on getting it out yesterday throughout the day but gave up, not sure how they will get it out unless they cut a 6ft wide path all the way to shore :o

The fines, if  any, are case by case. I know of several vehicles through the ice on black lake and don't recall one of them being fined as long as they got the machine out asap. Get a chain saw, a wrecker with a winch and a local diver. Not too bad but bad enough. I hate to have a 10k + machine sitting under water like that.

I couldnt be positive for black seeings i have actually never fished. But sodus bay if its not out within 24hrs its something crazy like those numbers for fine per day. But i have extraction included on my snowmobile ins. They wont pay to fix it of water but will get it out that was a great thing i liked about the policy

The ice is still there - this cold weather coming will make it better than it was.  The lake is "on the rise" though from all the runoff, which will likely make the shoreline a bit difficult for a while.

Ice should be good.  I don't have personal experience (not since Sunday in the rain, when I got a wet azz) anyways it should be good.  Watch the shoreline and any areas that may be bad from the rising water and all the runoff.

Current update...Due to run off, Black Lake water level is rising. Makes for poor ice on shore line. Walk on only at this time. Ice conditions are soft, dangerous to 6 inches. Many cold nights are apparent in the upcoming forecast. Ice conditions should be improving nightly. There are people still fishing daily. We will update again as soon as we can.

I'll be joining sbuffaloice on our 1st trip ever to Black Lake next week. If any area regulars would be willing to share any info like what baits produce well or tecniques that may work better than others it would be greatly appreciated. I've got both tipups and tipdowns that I'm bringing as well as the assortment of rods. Our usual strategy is to jig for panfish while we set out tipups for pike or sometimes I go with the tipdowns for panfish. I'll be in either a Commando flipover or my new Clam bigfoot 2000 hub and I should have my Iceshanty flag flying so anyone in the area is welcome to stop by the hut and with 6 guys I'm willing to bet the tipup minefield will give us away too. It would be cool to meet some of our shanty brothers and sisters out there and if any of you are planning a trip our way to say Silver Lake, Chautauqua, or even Erie if it freezes, I would be more than happy to share any info to help you have a successful trip. We are staying at Black Lake Marine and Cottages and hopefully with a good day of fishing we'll be having our 1st fishfry on the shores of Black Lake. Thanks again for any info.

Seems odd doesn't it?  I put both those cams up.  The one on the north end (BigBay) is in an area that is fished regularly - it is just a very narrow field for that side of the lake it is on.  The far side gets fished as well, just not much.  The ice in that area is VERY walkable.  The tracks you see "imbedded" in the ice there are mine from my and a friends ATVs. Just before the warm up.  Anyways it's a pretty safe area.  Walkable for sure.  Maybe I'll be checking it out tomorrow with the wheeler  ;D  BTW - that is not far from all the area all the talk is about - Black Lake Marine.
The other cam is not pointed at an area that fished much.  Not very accessible.
Hope you guys that headed this way have some good luck.  There was a nice muskie caught and released in the area of Black Lake Marine last year.  Good area for crappie jigging as well.  Got to move around and find the "holes" in the weed bed there.  You will be in 5 - 7 FOW.

Silver Lake is kind of the same way, if you can find the holes in the weeds or even better the lanes the fish like to travel while in the weeds and it will be a good day. I've seen guys off by 1' or 2' and they get nothing while 12" away another guy is killing them. Can anyone tell me about the price and availability of bait? Just need to know if I need to bring anything that may not be available. I'll probably be looking for waxies and spikes on the grub end then maybe some shiners and bigger pike bait. Thanks again guys.

Chapman's will be your bait shop to look for on the Edwardsville side of the lake. Very nice store and great people.

Both Chapman's and Black Lake Marine will have what you want.  Never paid attention to the price.  I think I got 50 waxies for 4$ or something like that.  That's pricey, in my mind, for grubs.  :P

Thanks for the cams.I check them at least twice a day...and I don't even fish black lake.I've been itching to give it a try.But it's just nice to see some hard water.

This is an awful thing I've lived in gouverneur my whole life and fished black lake alot and I have no clue where black lake marine is. Is that near the log cabins or by Chapman's. I guess I've never paid any attention I've always went to Chapman's been going there for years my parents used to rent a camp every summer at Chapman's so that's where I've always done my business.

you'll let us know if you make it out on your wheeler, right? ;D ;)  wondering about that shoreline ice...

i know there will be skeptics, but two summers ago i had my first sorta contact with a muskie on black lake.  i won't say exactly where(was in about 7 fow), but i was working a kvd through a known weedy area.  occasionally i'd get some weeds hung up on the treble hooks of the lure and found that if i ripped it real good with the rod, i could break those weeds free.  one particular cast, i did just that and as the lure was nearing the edge of the boat, i saw an enormous muskie come out of the dark bottom and come up and miss that lure as i burned that lure back to my rod.  it was 5 feet from the edge of the boat.  i was ill.  i stood in stunned silence for what seemed like forever before my fishing partner asked me what was up.  i tell him and get the reply most of you are probably thinking..."yeah, right."

Sounds like it was time to try that old trick of stuffing the rod/lure down in the water and doing a hard figure 8 repeatedly with the rod through the water-you never know-next time..   Cya...

Black Lake Marine is a bait shop and campground on the lake.  About 2 miles towards Ogdensburg from Edwardsville.  Not far from the bigbay cam.

Drove to the lake tonite - found about 8' of water (distance to the ice) I know my tracked wheeler won't get up on that "shelf". Maybe in a day or two.  The lake is now going back down from a high.  All the local rivers have subsided and are receding.  The ice-maker is at work tonite.

What's your definition of a "good fishing day"?  Good "catching" day?  Better stay away cause no one can show or tell you where to go for that.   You can look for walleye in Black Lake for many years and not find them.  I doubt you will get skunked.  Just go and enjoy the lake and the day.  That's what I'm in it for; catching fish is a bonus.  Finding walleye in Black Lake is a real bonus.  ;D

Go to "Daddyrainbow's" Post which was made a few before yours. You have 3 Posts so you can get to the Reports & Conditions board that is explained there. Go to the Lake you have interest in and read up starting with the most recent Post and work backwords. If there is not an ice report there than it is probably not safe.    Welcome and good luck to you....

Pick up a hotspots map for Black Lake and study it (bottom contours) along with the web map and you'll be on the way to knowing Black Lake.

First of all, we appreciate all the compliments, nice to know our efforts are well received.  :)

Update for the lake as of 8 am this morning....

The water level has stopped rising, and shoreline has locked up well.  We meassured a solid 7 inches of ice out in front of us, on the "wide" end of the Lake.  With very little snow on the ice, these freezing temperatures will continue to add ice fast.  Be careful of pressure ridges, and areas of current as the ice may not be as thick in some areas.  Be safe everyone.  Will update when able again, if there are any changes in the future.

Regrettably, I will not be fishing Saturday.  Fish & Game Club Derby and I'm one of the key workers!  Stop by the clubhouse and say hi, if you get any time.  Weather is looking good.
I'll be out Sunday, for sure.  Got to get my trailer back in order - been hollering at myself for 3 days - had a flat Friday AM, went to change it and stripped one the lugnuts.  That put my trailer and wheeler on hold for a while.  Parts are here today.  Man, if only I had done that maintenance I intended on doing this past summer!  :%$#!:  Will NOT happen again -  @)

I thought I posted this Monday but I'll try again. We stayed at the cabin on Milearm Thurs through Sun, and fished Fri and Sat. Limits and then some of Crappie both days. Biggest was 14" and average was 11". Definitely bigger size class than last few years. Even got a hawk perch 11 1/2". I let her go as there aren't too many of that size in the lake. Tip ups for me produced 5 pike and 3 bass. Biggest pike was 28", and biggest bass was 3 1/2 lbs smallie. Lost a couple real nice pike. Saw a few buddies from back home camping out on the ice (crazy cuz it was only 3 degrees on Thurs night) they did well too. Hoping to get back up there at least once more this year.

Heading up to Black this morning for the first time with some friends from Buffalo. Will be saying @ Black Lake Marine Cottages, looking for callies and pike..would be great to meet up with any IS members and shoot the stuff...I have one question..is our best bet to stay near our spot at the cottage,Upper Big Bay area, or venture down to Mile Arm Bay and the southern part of the lake? Hope to meet some of you out there! Ill be in a big Otter, a Frabill hub, or right out in the open!!

Check out a google map - prolly near 20 miles, maybe a few less.  Do you have access to Mile Arm?  Access to the ice at BLM is good and the pike and crappie fishing in that area can be good.  Ice conditions are good enough to cross the lake now and the fishing can be good in the bay across from BLM.

12" plus.  Shore may get a bit trickey because the water is on the rise.  No big deal.  Where you get on depends on if you have ice transportation or how far you want to walk and what kind(s) of fishing oyu do.  One of the best spots is Rollaway Bay (public access)

Idk about Rollaway, i would just google it. As for Mile Arm, it's all private access unless you have a camp or have a friend with a camp i would stick to Rollaway Bay. You can always talk to Chapman's for more specific advise

CHAPMAN'S SPORT SHOP

There once was a day you could ice fish sections of black lake on a weekend and see only a few santies here and there. Very few on a week day.   I hate to drive by and see the mess on rollaway every weekend....should it bother me?, no. does it?, yes. Good for the folks at chapmans I suppose. With that said...another advantage of being local is having access to other areas of the north country that are not as known so much to others.  Good luck this weekend north countriers, I'll be somewhere away from the crowd and Hopefully hammering them!

Does anyone fish lonesome bay through the ice? Im sure this is a silly question but i dont hear much about it on here and its the only place I have ever fished on black lake and it was in a boat in the spring. Just asking out of curiosity because i remember doing quite well there. I have a place to camp for free up there just no where to stay for ice fishing. Thanks in advance

Fished all around it two weeks ago and nothing but a few tiny perch. Was very disappointing.

Well I fished yesterday since no one else did. Very few people out which was surprising. Caught a ton of crappie throughout the day, all small with alot of 8 inchers. One flag all day...guess it was just the day. Drilled ALOT of holes for the little bit I came home with. With all the good luck I've had on black, I will take a slow day. Lots of ice with solid shore lines. Let hope this coming snow blows off and doesn't make a mess of the place.

You need a little more experience with the Amish.  They are not really any different than other folks - there are rude individuals from every walk and corner of life.  As a rule, I've found the Amish to be friendly and non-confrontational.  And I've been around them since their arrival in the north country.
Anyways - to answer your post, Shannon, the fishing has been good for me and several others on Black Lake.  Hope you have good luck and a good time.  Don't bet on walleye, they can be difficult to find.

Many people have told me that Butternut Cove has winter accommodations.  I've owned a place on the lake since 1981 and have befriended several Amish families and they are honest hard working and abide by rules and regulations.  I loan a couple of the men a row boat I have at my cottage to get off shore and catch a meal for their large families.  I've also been told by them don't give any other Amish permission or you will have horse **** all up and down your driveway.  What you might have ran into is the areas I ice fish there are holes in the weeds and if you're not in one of them you will only get dink perch hence everyone will move towards those guy pulling up keepers and some people find that rude if you were the first one there.  Look at the ice in that area and see how many and how close the holes are drilled.

So if I'm reading this correctly, you let this amish family use your boat out of your kindness, and then they tell you to not let any other amish use it or else they'll have their horse crap all over your driveway??  I really hope I misunderstood you, or else they don't sound very friendly to me at all.. maybe that "Amish Mafia" show isn't all the BS I just assumed it was!  :o

Once you get to know the  Amish you will find out they are very competitive and if they think one of there piers are getting an advantage by bending their rules they will rat him out to their bishop.  Now a days with all the new technology the bishop has to rule on the use of many things such as battery operated power drivers, that's a no no.  Yet they are allowed to use battery operated flash lights as long as there are only 2 batteries and no more.  I've chatted with one of the teenage girls and she made a statement that anytime something comes along that will make our job and life easier they ban it.  Sprinklers are not allowed you have lots of kids and they can stand there and hold a hose.  You would shake you head when you hear some of the rules.  So when I lend my boat to one of them they are paranoid that other Amish that aren't getting that favor will rat on them and tell the Bishop and it will be disallowed thus that's why they tell me not to give permission to other Amish.  The old rule "if I can't have it then no one else is!"  They love gossip and the first thing they read in the paper if they obtain one is police blotter to see if any of their community has got nailed, news travels fast in their comunity.

i seen an amish girl at a gas station on chautauqua lake reach into her purse and pull out an iphone.   haahah  then the other family on my buddies road pull out the bobcat in the morning to help do chores while there generator runs all the lights and milking equipment.   95% of amish are fakes.

I was talking to one by my cabin in cattaraugus county (more strick old order amish)and he said there are hundreds of types of amish and he only considers a handful really amish.

It's a very fascinating culture and there are many different sec's.  Most of the ones at Black lake are Old School which is the strictest trying to conform to the old rules.  I've been to the Jamestown area and there they have batteries in the buggies to power lights and solar Chargers for them.  They call anyone not Amish English and they do like to have a few of as friends as they can ride in a car for medical reasons and I do pick up bulk supplies from Sam's club for them, but they make sure they tell you only if your going there for something for yourself.

My pal Fish2163 and I are heading this way on the weekend.  We will be fishing Sunday and Monday, this will be our first time there and any info will be cool.

I see that the lake has a lot to offer and has a wide selection of fish to target.  Wouldn't mind hooking into a monster of a fish, but for the most part we only fish the pans.  Is there a good spot to start looking for the monsters while catching their food?

I've looked back through about 15-20 pages and haven't found this question answered, and the search function won't work on my phone, so if this has already been asked I apologize.

Some friends of mine and I have been discussing taking a trip up there fishing this winter. I've never been on hard water up there and was wondering if there were any areas we should be cautious about. We usually gain access at the end of the stone church road, and my friends family has a cabin on the opposite side (whiskey pt area?). Any input or decent fishing spots in that area would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Well - do not get on at that area of the lake.  Driving by today - there were MANY open water areas.
The upper area of the lake - above Edwardsville is pretty good going with some slush and over 12" of ice most every where.  Stay away from pressure ridges.  The area below Edwardsville - around the bait shop there is also good.

Good luck.

i fished mile arm and rollway this year and did good at both. Im my opinion your not gaining anything by the extra walk or ride to mile arm.  its a sweet place but we did just  as good or better at rollway.  im sure rollway gets more pressure but i don't know how much the entire lake gets all together anyways.

That area's being hit pretty hard.  Was the first fishable ice of the season - folks on there December 1st and right on through.  Crappie bite, a couple of weeks ago was great - it has fallen off some.  Still one of the best areas to get decent crappie and decent pike; just have to find them.
Which camp is yours?

I was hoping to get up there to check on my camp and some fishing, but I can't seem to get my permission slip signed!
I'm only an hour away in Lowville, NY but with 3 kids and a wife who is a music teacher my weekends are booked.  Hopefully in January things will open up.  My camp is two doors down from black lake marine.  When im up there you iceaholics should/can stop by for some pops!

Fished off Rollaway yesterday. About 6-7 inches of light snow on the ice. Just enough to make a heavy sled full of gear heavier. Good ice though- a solid 8 inches. Fish were slow on the bite but I was still able to get a few keeper perch/crappie and a couple small northern. Got the kinks out, scratched the itch, and nothing broke for a change. Not a bad day for the first trip of the season even if it was -5 most of the day.

Forgot to mention- to the SOB's that left their garbage on the ice- pick your stuff up you lazy slobs. Really, this is how we are going to start out the season? Show some respect for what we have. If you want to be a scum bag then stay home. Your not welcome here. I'll be sure to back my truck up to your front lawn and dump off my garbage. Then maybe you will get the point.  >:(

im wonderring if anyone has taken machines on the ice from rollaway. I was there last saturday and measured 8 inches of ice but i saw no machines. It was an easy drag then but it sounds like there is some snow on the ice now.

I was on the main lake today with my wheeler and flip shelter (now my wheeler is big, and loaded it's near 1000lbs.; more with me on it :woot:).  Crossed the lake from Chapmans to Raspberry Island and down to behind Crab Island.
No guesstimates - Stanley says 8" of black Ice with about 6-8" of drifted snow - pressure ridges were small and tough to see but they are there and working and wet, (slushy).  Hopefully, the next two days, being in the upper 30s with some rain will lay that snow down.
Going out of Rollaway with a machine should be no problem.  I'd say the drag, by foot, would be just that; a real drag.  Smitty sled would do wonders right now for those that walk.

Out from the Black lake Marine Bait Store is probably the best (size-wise) crappie fishing on the lake.  BUT - you gotta find a "spot".  If you are catching perch - not in one of the "spots".  If you bang bottom - Pike or Bowfin on your jig is likely.
There are about 6 "spots" out there and they get taken up early, most days.  The spots have no weeds and are 12 to 18" deeper than the surrounding area.  "Needles in a haystack" if you will.
Rollaway Bay can be more productive with Gills and smaller crappie and a possibility for an odd Walleye.

Good luck.

Great report Phil. And guys just read back a few pages before you ask ridiculous questions...

On a side note...On Sunday me and jakep let two guys borrow a pair or spreaders that were pike fishing. When we came back later in the day there was Gatorade bottles and coffee cups and all sorts of crap laying in the spot where they were fishing earlier. If one of you guys are here on the website you should be ashamed of yourselves. I would have wrapped them spreaders around your damn heads if I seen you guys high tailing out of there leaving that mess on the ice. We stopped and cleaned it up. But even for all the other guys to walk past it and leave it there is just as bad. Come on guys really ???

Unfortunately the scumbags that leave trash on the ice are unlikely to be shanty members. The ice shanty community is hopefully the example setters for how to be caretakers for the Earth, the Earth that gives us the ability to partake in this activity that we love so much. It is a sad fact that we are the environmental police. Without consequences this type of behavior will continue. Thank you guys for picking up the trash, I hate it soooooo much it makes me outraged....I fished a place this year and ran into guys that said "hey, there are our beer cans from yesterday" and all they did was laugh, guess who picked them up?? :callcops:

Good luck on that.  Walleyes in Black Lake are pretty tough to find, in numbers; sometimes pretty tough to find at all.  ;)2
Not sure where to send you - I know of a few that have been caught out of Rollaway Bay, but they were oddball catches while targeting Pike on tipups or jigging for Crappie.
I been searching that lake for a number years and have a very few spots, not going to give them up.

That's not quite right either.  Riding on yuor own property does not abstain you fro registration and other requirements.  Think it has to be "farm use".

Sorry - you are 100 percent wrong and passing on information that is incorrect.

Read on:
http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/Themes/IceShanty2011/images/bbc/url.gif (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/Themes/IceShanty2011/images/bbc/url.gif)

It's not the entire regulation but you will get the "gist" of it.

For all you guys asking questions - you should get your answers from some source of law enforcement.

It's fine if you do not want to acknowledge the regulations; just don't pass on that bad knowledge.   ;)

Been doing ATV instruction in NY, for the ASI, for several years.

So if after reading the document listed above, you still want to declare an exemption from the registration, that's fine, but that exemption is specific and does not allow for recreational riding of any kind, anywhere.  Not going to argue the helmet thing - that's just plain common sense.  Don't care about the legality of it and don't care if you wear one.

Look for Rollaway Bay.  There is information on the map about parking in the few areas that have public access.  Also, if you get a Fishing Hotspots Map for Black Lake, you can get some ideas of this lake is like and some ideas of where to go.  If you have a sled or properly equipped wheeler, you can get most anywhere.
After all that, PM me, and I can give you some ideas for the area(s) you choose.  @)

Look at the map.  ;D  There are two of them on the lake.  Maybe a third - off Rt. 58 near Rollaway.  I'll see if I can get it on the map.

By The Way, here is another MAP  (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-kw92o3LaOHaE8yNXhUSDMyd3M/edit?usp=sharing)of the lake showing bottom topology.

ATVs
Does an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) require a vehicle registration?
An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is any self-propelled vehicle that is manufactured for use on off-highway trails. These vehicles are less than 70 inches wide and weigh less than 1,000 pounds.

You must register an ATV to drive the vehicle on public property or private property in NYS. An ATV that is only used for agricultural purposes or not-for-hire snow removal on private property does not require a registration. A registration for an ATV that was issued in another state to a resident of that state is valid in NYS.

If you purchase an ATV from a NYS ATV dealer on or after April 1, 2005, the dealer is required to register your ATV before it is delivered to you.

To register an ATV not purchased from a NYS ATV dealer, bring the following items to a DMV office:

Acceptable proof of ownership. (Read the information that appears below).
Proof that the NYS sales tax was paid or proof of the purchase price of the ATV. If you purchased the ATV from an out-of-state ATV dealer, and the bill of sale indicates that the dealer collected the NYS sales tax, no additional sales tax is due. If the out-of-state dealer collects out-of-state sales tax, you can apply for credit toward the payment of the NYS sales tax when you apply for registration in NYS. You an be eligible for credit only if NYS and the other state have a reciprocal sales tax agreement (See form DTF-804 for more information). If you purchased the ATV from a private seller, the seller and the buyer complete form DTF-802 (Statement of Transaction for Sales Tax). You can also show your proof of exemption or proof that the tax was paid.
A completed form MV-82 (Registration / Title Application). The instructions are on form MV-82.1 (Registering/Titling a Vehicle in New York State)
Proofs of your identity and your date of birth. See form ID-82 (Proofs of Identity for Registration and Title)
Cash, a check or a credit card to pay the registration fee and the required sales tax.
Acceptable proof of ownership

If you purchased the ATV from a NYS ATV dealer on or after April 1, 2005, the dealer must register your ATV before it is delivered to you. Your proof of ownership is the NYS transferable ATV registration.

If you purchase the ATV from an out-of-state ATV dealer, acceptable proof of ownership to apply for registration at a DMV office can be:

a manufacturer's certificate of origin or a manufacturer's statement of origin, and the bill of sale from the dealer, or
the registration or the title certificate signed by the previous owner that transfers the ownership to the dealer, and a bill of sale from the dealer that transfers the ownership to you.
A bill of sale from an ATV dealer must include this information:

the name and the address of the dealer and the registration number of the dealer
your name and your address
the vehicle identification number of the ATV, the year, the make, the model, and the number of wheels
an indication that the ATV is either used or new
an indication that the dealer collected the correct NYS sales tax.
If the ATV is transferred by a private individual, acceptable proof of ownership is:

a NYS or out-of-state transferable registration or title certificate signed by the previous owner to transfer ownership to you, or
if the current owner did not register the ATV, a transferrable registration and bill of sale that transferred ownership to the current owner, and a bill of sale that transfers ownership to you. For more information, read the information about acceptable proofs of ownership and bills of sale from private ATV owners.
Do I need insurance coverage for my ATV?
Insurance coverage is required unless you drive the ATV on your private property only. You must show your proof of insurance to a judge, a police officer, or any person who makes a claim of injury or property damage.

Do I need a driver license to drive an ATV?
You do not need a driver license to drive an ATV, but restrictions apply to ATV drivers under the age of 16:

Children 10 to 15 years of age can drive an ATV only:

with adult supervision, or
without adult supervision on property where their parent or guardian is the owner or tenant, or
without adult supervision on property where ATV use is permitted and the child completed an ATV safety-training course approved by the DMV. (Carry your course certificate with you when you drive.)
Children under the age of 10 may drive an ATV only:

with adult supervision, or
without adult supervision on property where their parent or guardian is the owner or tenant.
You can operate an ATV on public lands where signs indicate that ATV use is allowed. Only operate an ATV on private property if you have permission from the property owner.

1.  Regulation - state-wide.

2. Not an issue right now.  Like riding on concrete 3/4" or more ice on top of the snow, on top of 8" minimum black ice base.

State-wide?  I have heard and read, rigid tow bar period, then rigid tow bar when towing person on sled, toboggan, etc., and rigid tow bar on shoulder of road or crossing a road? ???

Thanks for the ice/slush info. Stuck sled and an old guy with heart condition not a good combination. ;)

Put a winch on that sled Bart.  @)

I was wrong - part of what you said is correct.  It was covered in that document I posted a link to.

Don't really matter to me.  I don't like having the sled run into me when I stop or go down a hill.

YOU MAY NEVER OPERATE AN ATV:
•Other than while seated on the permanent, regular seat.
•With a passenger, unless the ATV is designed to carry a passenger.
•At a speed too fast for existing conditions or potential hazards.
•In a careless, reckless or negligent manner.
•While intoxicated or impaired by alcohol or drugs.
•On the tracks or right-of-way of a railroad.
•On a highway, if the ATV is equipped with studded tires other than automobile-type studs.
•In a tree nursery or planting in a manner which damages or destroys growing stock or creates a substantial risk of damage or destruction.
•Within 100 feet of a dwelling between midnight and 6 A.M. at a speed greater than necessary to keep the ATV moving.
•While pulling a person on skis, a toboggan, sleigh, sled or trailer, unless the device is attached to the ATV by a tow-bar or other rigid connection.
•On the ice or public water within 100 feet of a person, fishing shanty or shelter at a speed greater than necessary to keep the ATV moving.
•Over an area cleared of snow for skating, unless necessary for access to public waters.

LOCAL LAWS

No locality may require its own ATV licenses or registrations, but it may impose additional restrictions or rules on ATV operation. Find out about special ATV rules in your area, and obey them.

SO, by law, you can't tow someone on skis by a rope (i.e.waterskiing on the snow).  >:(  I don't see where that could be dangerous!  ::)

Kudo's to FFP for attaching the links to those maps. They are awesome. I really liked when you clicked on the marker showing fish creek it gave you a link to the history of pope's mills. It made for some interesting reading about old game warden stories. Kudo's to everyone who posted info on the ATV laws also. It's great to see everyone helping each other out trying to give them the RIGHT advice and not what someone thinks it should be. Just remember, do the right thing. It's a lot cheaper. Heaven knows we spend enough money on gas, augers, tip ups, and did I mention bait??? I'm gonna have to work a second job to buy a dozen minnows. LOL. Merry X-mas to all you IS Mo Fo's.  ;D

Not sure which map you are having problems with.  One of them is a custom Google Map and the other is a PDF of the lake showing bottom contours.

If it is the google map, you may need google earth installed to view it; if it is the the other, you will need the Adobe Reader Plugin.  Both are free.

A sheriff told me I could ride unregistered uninsured on own property, we were riding old 70's beater sleds and they had a road block in my friends field (trail cuts through it) and he said it was legal but if we wandered off the property we would get tickets....we had no helmets on and this was oneida county

They are a short drive (<5min), so probably out of the question for you. They do sit right on Eel Bay though. Depending on what you are fishing for, that might also be a good option for you.

True.
Where you from Matt?
You need to know the "normal" trouble areas and follow the weather.  The lake is a big, wide, river for the most part.  There can be current in certain areas.  Stay away from points and narrow areas and pressure ridges.  If you see yellow snow, stay away - it's likely lake water, not the other "yellow".
There are areas that are open all winter, as well.  Stay on the beaten path and use your head and look where you are going.
Got some specific questions about specific areas?  Ask.

we've been out twice on rollaway bay, since Christmas day and have had decent luck. The first day we pulled a couple smaller Perch and three Northerns (the largest about 22"). We went yesterday straight out, and boy was there a nice group of people already when we hit the ice at 9am!! our big catch was a 32" northern and pretty much our only one. I pulled 3 keeper crappie about 10-12" and a huge momma perch at 14"(which had a pike minnow in its mouth  ;D ), wish I could have caught more like that. But right around 2:00 our jigging hit a stop and we picked up.
we've been using minnows for jigging with decent luck, does anyone have better luck on spikes or wax worms?

It has been probably 30 years since i went fishing there. Used to go on vacation there. It was a great panfish lake then. Don't know what it is like now. The NAV chip for Black Lake is not that great.  The best chip I've seen for Black Lake is Fishing Hotspots on a Lowrance.  Or just pick up a paper version of the Fishing Hotspots on Black Lake and do it by landmarks.

Not.  All that we had was sleet and freezing rain tha tis as hard as concrete right now.  Got less than an inch of blowing powder stuff yesterday and last night.

There is a lot of good info in this thread and over in the reports thread for Black Lake.  Includes maps with access and fishing information.  There are only a few public access areas on the lake.  Chapman's Sport Shop and Black Lake Marien are good sources of bait and current info.

Forecast calls for temps in the upper 20's on Sat. And possibly low 30's on Sunday with light winds. Someone's fishing from sun up til sundown  two days straight. Just need to come up with a few good excuses to keep the old lady of my case!
How about "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and if that doesn't work try "too bad".

I didn't like the looks of the road in when I got there so I decided to play it safe. Don't think a few ccrappies is worth me messing up my truck. Some of that road is a bit scary when there is ice.
Good choice.  ;D

Went out to Rollway today. Caught a ton(100+) of dink crappies, perch, and bluegills. Only managed 4 keeper gills and a decent crappie. Saw a lot of pike being pulled through today. My Marcum's screen was full of fish all day and it proved to be the most action I have had ice fishing in awhile.

Made it out to Rollway again today managed these and two northerns. One was about 31 inches the other about 20(which I caught on my ultra light) Pretty miserable all day rainy and some wind. When I was tending to my tip-ups my shanty flew about 50yds down the lake  :%$#!: I ran it down then promptly fell on my face pulling it back  :'( It was pretty slick out there.

just in case anyone is planning on coming up to fish at rollway tomorrow , the shore ice at both access spots is broken and deep water , there is access by foot , but not by wheeler.  It will be ok after this weeks cold temps , but not right now.  I was there today and watched person after person try it and get their wheelers stuck.

the ice itself is great tho , 16" at rollway

There are folks that fish that area - I think mostly tipups for Pike.  There is a reason Rollaway is popular -  ;)  I like fishing different areas of the lake and do it all the time.  It's fishing mostly, though - not catching. :)

Thanks.  I heard there used to be tons of walleye until the runoff made the lake more fertile increasing the pressure from the crappie population.
That's one theory.  The two major creeks that provided spawning areas were also demolished, both by changes in human use - silting in the rocky bottom and draining some of the area.  Both of those areas have been "recovered" and spawn runs are returning to some extent.  Along with a great stocking program by the DEC; they are making a comeback.
I have had some luck the last few years - finding them is a real chore though.

Just got back from my first ice fishing trip at Black Lake.  The pike were biting all weekend.  Caught one real nice 30".  All released.  Tons of dink perch with a few keepers here and there.  All about 200 - 300 yards out in front of Butternut Cove where we were camping.  4*4 SUV didn't have clearance to navigate the snow, but walking wasn't too bad.  Ice was very deep.  Probably 2' +

To answer question above - on our last day of fishing (Sunday 2/16) snow was probably about 6-8 inches, packed down pretty tight.  It wasn't that bad but need a truck with clearance and good tires to drive on it.

We've been ice fishing Black Lake for the past 5 yrs. One or two trips a year since its 4.5 hrs from home. This year was a shockingly horrible trip. We have always done well on 12-15" crappie and palm sized bluegill. It was our favorite trip each year. Only a few keepers between the six of us in three days this time. All the fish in the bay were tiny. After spending most of the second day in the Narrows searching for bigger fish, I finally managed a 20" walleye on a tipup at last light. Caught a 3-4 lb. Largemouth the last day and a TON of 5" perch. Blew out a wheel bearing just as we got on the road and was stranded for 2.5 hrs. to make matters worse.

I fished the st lawrence nearby and the bite was terrible.  We caught a few pike, but the perch were all tiny and were not biting.  We were in a spot that we could see to the bottom and saw several large pike swimming right under us and they could care less about our lures or tip ups.  We did not see a single perch worth filleting.  They just are not there.  Is the amount of ice affecting perch movements? Or time of year?  I have never seen it this slow before.  Usually we can hammer jack perch but we were catching fish the size of our minnows.

Feb is always a tough month, but usually with a lot of holes drilled and moving around, I can scrape together something resembling a decent day on the ice. This year has been extremely tough and the once consistent spot on Black Lake was the dagger on my hopes this month. I'm hoping the late ice period is on fire to make up for this slow fishing

Builtright,

Nice fish! how deep did you have to setup for the walleye?  I am still new to catching them through the ice and they have proven difficult to catch.  I heard they were in black lake but from what I gather, they are tough to catch consistently.
Title: Re: Black Lake NY
Post by: builtright716 on Feb 19, 2014, 12:07 PM
In my experience, this time of the yr especially, you have to fish the dawn and dusk periods for walleye. I set up on the edge of a shoal in 12-16 FOW next to a 20-30 foot deep basin. It was just before a low pressure system so the barometer was falling which is ideal. Walleye fishing on unfamiliar lakes is not easy but the panfishing wasn't working that day so it was worth a shot. I had the spot picked out from contour maps before hand and just had to execute. 6-7" sucker chubs on a treble hook with a glow bead above set 3' off bottom. We jigged for them as well and would get followers but no takers. I'm pretty new to walleyes through the ice too but enjoy the challenge of figuring them out and the reward of seeing that head come up through the hole at the other end of my line.

April 4th - Got out with mdupper for some Crappie.  We had 28" of ice. Top 8 was white and softened up in the sun and 40 deg. weather. Still 18" of good hard black ice under it.
We got a few nice crappie and mdupper got his first Bowfin - 25".

Always think I have a trophy walleye when I catch a dogfish. Disappointing but they sure can fight.

Same here, still a couple weeks left yet. Looking forward to taking a break. Been hunting hard since Oct. I have a feeling Black lake is gonna get some traffic again this year. :-\
