Keeping your knees dry
« on: Dec 04, 2006, 01:02 AM »
When working the tip-ups my knees get wet-----then cold. Any good ideas for keeping the "knocken" knees dry???

This is what I use.
Ice Chaps   $15.00 can't go wrong  ;D
And it even helps on the ice freeze up on the front of your pants when using the gas auger.  ;D

ice chaps.  If  you wear a snow suit or thick pants you may have to extend the velcro straps on them.

They ain't cheap but look at Ice Armor's new convertible bibs. You can finally buy the bibs separately. They are 100% waterproof and the kneepads built into them are awesome!

I wouldnt admit to spending alot of time on my knees anywhere else but on this site, and even with my gortex bibs, those ice chaps from cabelas help to cushion my worn knees quite a bit as well as help to keep them warm and dry.  nothing like kneeling on a small 'pebble' of ice to make one run for the chaps.  definitely a great stocking stuffer and well worth the price....and unlike other pads and such, once you put them on,,,they are there when you go running for that flaaaaaaag.

I always carry a boat cusion in my shack. I carry it with me whenever I set up tipups or when I get a flag. I'm ordering the coldsnap bibs today so maybe I won't need the cusion anymore because of the waterproof padded knee pads. :)
Just waiting for the hardwater.

Boat cushion also, works great just have to remember to bring it when you go running after that flag.  I usually set it on top of the minnow bucket .

I used my gloves and just kneeled on them, but I just got some ice chaps for Christmas  ;D

I have also worn gortek pants, but unfortunately they shrunk. (At least I believe they shrunk, for some reason they don't fit anymore)  ???

I use an inflatable seat (hunting seat) by Hunter Specialties. It has a rubber bladder with nylon camo fabric.  It is about 22"x13"x1 1/2"thick.  Has a small valve and requires very little air.  Also has a nylon strap with plastic clip and is designed to be worn around your waist.  If I'm hole hopping, I use it as a knee pad.  Dry and Soft!  When I need to move, just strap it around my waist and go.  Paid about $20

Harbor Freight Tool Company or any other construction supply firm or do-it yourself store like Lowes and Home Depot sell for only a few bucks knee pads with adjustable straps that will fit over or under most outfits. These allow for good range of motion, protect the patellas from ice chip fractures and keep you dry!
Happy Kneeling! :D

The new carhart breathable pants have been working good this season. They are expensive +- 100 bucks but shure work. I work outside and usually buy a pair of carharts every year so I'll see how they wear. I don't think I'll be welding with them as they look like they might melt.

I use those interlocking 24''x24'' foam mats that usually come 6/pack. They also double for grat DRY mats to stand on when getting bibs/boots on and off ....Also...i cut mats in a 10''-11'' circle cut a slit to center and cut a 2''square in middle they are awsome covers for your tip up holes keeps them from freezing and filling with snow

I cut a foam sleeping pad in half, when I just have to look down the hole or am playing with gear my knees stay dry. The other half I use as a sleeping mat for my dog who likes to have a nap when the fishing is slow.

Walmart sells knee pads made of foam in the do it yourself home stuff for around 5 dollars. I also spray my bibs with scotchguard, it kinda helps.
If you have no clue what you are doing just buy more gear and try to look the part.
