Title: what to put above a spoon?
Post by: TeeBugg on Jan 25, 2018, 04:43 PM: been fishing in 25 foot of water, with a thin willow blade spoon. fish have been hammering it, but it takes forever to get down. tried different spoons and they seem to really like this one. so i added a few splitshot above it to get it down faster, with one issue. the perch are sometimes going by the spoon and hitting the splitshot lol. so im trying to decide what i can put above it to catch those fish that pass on the spoon. thoughts?

Post by: panfishman13 on Jan 26, 2018, 10:41 AM: i prefer little teardrop jigs on my dropper setups; but if you're looking to add weight to the rig, shoot for something larger.

something else you might try is putting your weight closer to your spoon, or putting a plain hook just below your split shot and tipping that with a plastic or some bait

Post by: panfishman13 on Dec 13, 2018, 01:10 PM: I’ll routinely run small flies above my jigging rapalas and spoons. Mid-season, that fly is what tends to consistently hook up on larger fish.
Doesn’t help you with the weight problem though...

Took a look and bought a few. Just got a freefall reel and it does not drop a 1/32 jig like I hoped it would so the drop shot idea is where Inwas heading.

As for added weight, try some tungsten beads above and/or below a simple #8 gold Aberdeen hook as a dropper off the main line. Tip it with grubs, eyes or minnow head. Sometimes all they want is a small morsel to whet their appetite.
