Some 10's and an 11" Hybrid
« on: Feb 13, 2011, 07:05 AM »
Lots of snow in New England has made it tough to get out as much as we would like, but we have found some great gills and gill hybrids in 12' of water to 33' of water.  We have landed a bunch in the 10 to 10.25" range this winter, 2 that went 10 3/4" and one that went 11" !  Most were caught on small jigs tipped with waxworms.  Big props to the Vex FL-20, St. Croix jigging rods and 3 lb. Sunline Sniper Fluoro.   100% Catch and Release on the 10" plus.  A couple of fiberglass replica mounts in the works.

Here are some photos of several tens and the eleven.

Beautiful fish, and kudos for releasing them! Looks like maybe you have some Long eared Sunfish in those waters, and possibly some Pumpkinseeds, as both gills and seeds grow considerably larger than Longears, despite the fact that all your fish have the distinct elongated "ear" on the gill plate. BTW, I'm no biologist, but do own a good guide book. ;)

Congrats again Mike-- those hybrids are trucks!  ;D

Was it tough to find those fish this season? One of my reliable gill spots totally shut down w/ the deep snow pack on ice...

Townie,

The first 10 3/4 was exactly where I would have thought it would be, weeds in 12' of water.  The others we got the other day were in a "new" area for us in 20' plus of water, an area where the Crappie and Yellow Perch action had been real good earlier in the season.

Those are truly great fish! I've not run into gills/hybrids with the long ear. Is that normal where your from? Beautifully gills! If that one is a pumkinseed it's the biggest I've ever seen.

Great Hybrids, Huskybass.  I'm mean Jigging Nomad  I only got 5 bulls and 1 seed over 10 inches this year but hundreds  9- 9 3/4. My go to lake is getting a lot of pressure in my area(I fish) the last two year and I seeing a decline in the big Bulls.
