Parasites in Brookies?
« on: Dec 01, 2010, 10:15 AM »
Hey guys - I'm new to the board and this is my first post. I am enjoying this forum and I think it's great that there's a place online to discuss our favorite winter sport.

I have a question - I was out last week at a local PG lake and I managed to catch some brookies, one about 14" and chunky. I kept this one for dinner and I was baking it in the oven. When I pulled it out to check if it was done there was a redish worm about an inch and a half long coming out of the flesh and writhing around. I have seen white worms but never one like this. I also noticed that it had a few dark spots on it's belly and it actually appeared that the worm was coming out of one of these spots. Has anyone seen this before?

Welcome to the site IceDrisher.
I have only seen white worms coming out of them before...never red :-\
I have seen lots from Kathie that had darker spots on belly, maybe thats why they tasted of the poorer quality.

Welcome to the site!

I would contact your local MNR, if they can't give you any info they would probably want to see the fish or find out where you caught them. Personally I have never seen worms in the meat of a Speckled trout.

Agree with the others.  Kathy Lake typically has worms and such on the brook trout, not sure I can recall seeing red worms though.

I don't supposed it was a chironomid larvae (e.g. bloodworm)?

although, you'd find that in the gut, not coming out of the skin.

if it was indeed coming from the meat, i suspect some sort of nematode, which should be killed by cooking through.
