Does anyone have one of these? If so how well are they built? Set-up time and are they easy to pull by hand across the ice? Thanks.

Are you meaning the ones with flip-down ends and plastic cover in the middle?

Perchhunter,
The kids bought me the Cabelas Deluxe Ice fishing tent (shanty - they call it a tent) for Christmas. The pro's: It was fairly inexpensive, has plenty of room for two people, easy to assemble, and lightweight. The cons: Dragging it on and off the ice is a hassle. They give you no way to hook up a rope. I ended up screwing in two eyehooks on the front and attached a rope. I am in the process of putting together a sled to make transporting it easier. The nice thing is when the sled is complete, the shanty will lay on the sled and I can put my Jet Sled (with equipment) on top of it so, when fishing alone, I can cart everything out in one trip. Hope this helps!
-
My buddy has one,I fish with him alot. PRO'S Light weight,Lots of room for 2 people.CON'S hard dragging with plywood bottom,Gear slides off. He's made many up grades it's nice now.

Could you put a set of wooden runners maybe made out of 2X4's? I thought about this too, but thought you could attach a set of runners depending on how the unit folds together. Thanks for your replies.
-
find an old pair of cross country skis and put them on the 2x4s works good
-
I thought about the cross country ski's (CC's) on mine, but a fellow veteran ice fisherman said I should shop around for downhill ski's as the CC's would be too flexible for towing. (This advice came right after I convinced my wife to give me her old CC's!!
-
Try using a pair of old water ski's, they are a lot wider than cc's and float over deep snow alot easier.I've got a pair on my cargo sled and they work great. :o
-
i've had one for about 12 years now....very durable...very roomie...i just built a rack on my sno-sled to set it on...built another rack that sets on the shelter to carry the gear in....hook it on the 4 wheeler and off we go...sets up and down in just a couple of minutes....for the size of it compared to the price of the shantieswith the bulit in floors of the same size...save hundreds of bucks...its time for me to get a new one and i'll buy the same one and use the floor from the old one....good luck and good fishing
-
Hey!!! I just ordered one on Cabalas on line. They are on sale right now!! from $119.00 down to $79.00! Came to about $93.00 with shipping and handling!! I can't wait to get it and put it together!!
-
Kpage,
Could you attach a set of 2x4 runners to the bottom of the floor? I wasn't sure if you could by looking at the picture in Cabela's. I wasn't sure which direction the tent folded up. I just ordered one from Cabela's also at the sale price of 79.99. I figured I can't go wrong at that price. Thanks
-
Perch Hunter, I'm planning on putting 2x4 runners on the bottom, but also putting matching 2x4s on the other side(top) so when it flips and becomes the floor it will all be even...
-
Scott,
That's exactly what I had in mind with mine. I'm assuming that the floor just flips over and becomes the bottom. I may attach some steel conduit to the bottom of the runners to make the sled slide a little better. I will try it without the conduit first to see how it works. I would think that you would need some sort of runners to keep the floor off the ice. I would imagine that the floor would freeze right the ice.
-
Perch Hunter, My wife called me at work. I told her I had ordered the kit and that I was going to put runners on it. She went into a 'Goodwill' store. bought a pair of cross country skis for $2.99. said they have screw - off bindings... I can't wait to get home and check them out and make plans to attatch them to the runners... Might even invest in some wax!! ;D
-
it flips open like a suit case...the skis are a good idea on both sides of the floor....nice thing about doing that is if its not real windy you can leave it set up with all your gear in it...and move move move....cut your holes and pull the shanty over them....the only thing i would do if i did that is i would put some kind of skirt around the bottom to keep the wind out...$79 is a good price...might as well order my replacement now....it cost me about fifty bucks to build the floor...but don't have to do that this time....the directions for the floor call for 2x2's....good luck and good fishing
-
Kpage,
How many holes do you have in your floor and where do you have them located? Did you use treated plywood or just CDX for the floor? If I do put runners on the bottom and top the next issue would be how to anchor it during windy conditions, especially if you have clear ice with no snow on top. Thanks.
-
Is this the shack with only the "small"(6"X6") windows on each side?
We often fish with tip-ups and would find it hard to keep an eye on them.
Does anyone know of a good way to add windows to this type of shack?
-
i have two 12" x 24" hinged openings side by side with about 24" between both...i used regular 3/4" plywood and after 12 years still as strong as the day i built it and i fish alot...i also use tip-ups but i set them so i can leave the door unzipped a few inches and see them all just fine both sides...as far as the windows...unless they're using a different type of plastic....they crack all to crap...i taped mine shut....i've fished in all kinds of weather and i weigh 165 lbs and have yet to be blown away in the shanty but i do have I bolts screwed into each outside corner and i have a strap that hooks to two of them then attaches to a 2ft piece of pipe that i drop in a hole just behind the shanty...holds it just fine....good luck and good fishing
-
I just checked my tracking order. It was shipped yesterday, is in transit and is scheduled to be at my door by Tuesday!!! So that means by a week from next Thursday it should be here!! I have decided that I am gong to put 3 2x4 runners on the bottom and 3 corresponding 2x4 'joists' on the flip side to set the 3/4" plywood off the ice/snow and for easier pulling. If I do this I can get both 34"x60" sections of flooring from one 4'x8' sheet of plywood. I will cut out the first 34"x60" section, and from the remaining piece of plywood, join 34"x48" from the top to a 12"x34" piece from the side. laid across the 2x4's, this will make a second section, without the added expense of buying another sheet of plywood... I can't wait!!
-
I HAVE ONE, I USED DOWN HILL SKIS,ON TOP OF THE SKIS I PUT SOME 1X2PLANKS WITH A BLOCK OF A 2X4 CUT ABOUT 3INS.X 3INS. ONE AT THE FRONT OF THE SKI AND ONE AT THE BACK, USED SCREWS TO HOLD THEM TOGETHER COUNTER SUNK THE ONES ON THE DOWNSIDE OF THE SKI. GOT SOME WOOD CLAMPS, I USE THE CLAMPS TO CLAMP THE SHELTER TO THE SKIS. THEN YOU CAN TIE THE ROPE TO THE TWO BLOCKS THAT ARE IN THE FRONT OF THE SKIS. STILL A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO PULL. I JUST BUY A FISH TRAP SO NO MORE PUTTING THE RIG TOGETHER EVERY TIME ON AND OFF THE ICE. BUT THE SHELTER WAS NICE ON THOSE COLD DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is our cabela's tent. You can also see the sled that we built for it.

Scott,
I received mine on Friday night and assembled it on Saturday. This thing is alot bigger than in the picture. Ii ended up using 5/8 plywood for the floor to save some weight. I was thinking about using the 2x4 runners, but this tent is pretty heavy without the runners already. I was thinking about using 2x2 joices on both sides every 16 inches just to keep the floor off the ice and then trying to attach a pair of water skis for runners that are detachable. You will have to buy 3 2x2's to hold the tent down. I had about $50.00 invested in wood, srews and hinges. Let me know how you make out and what you decided to do. I guess I didn't say that here in PA we are not allowed to have 4 wheelers on ice, so I will be pulling this baby by hand.
-
Here is a better picture of the bottom of our tent. We used 1/4 inch plywood for the base. We then took 1x2 around the base. Then you glue a 3/4 inch piece of insulation to the bottom. This makes it alot lighter. We also used a 1x4 around the tent, this makes a nice space for the tent and poles to sit in when you collapse the tent. I hope this helps anyone.

-
Frozen1,
Thanks for the great closeup pics. Using the 1/4 plywood did you have to put any joices in the middle of the floor? Looks like an old runner sled that's under the shanty. Did you build that one or buy it? Thanks for the help.
-
Frozen1 - Thanks for those pics!! They're Awesome. I live in the woods of Maine, so my kit will probably take a while longer to get here.. but when it does, I will post how we do - putting it together. Good Luck with yours, Perch Hunter!
-
Perchhunter,
We did not have to use any joices in the middle. The insulation gives it plenty of support. Also, I had a friend weld the sled together for me. The picture gives you an idea on how we did our tent and if you any questions, let me know.
Good Luck,
frozen1

Got my tent in the mail, yesterday. Won't have a chance to work on it til Sunday afternoon... Boy are those directions confusing... ??? (or is it just me?) Any help on translating those directions into something I can understand would be most appreciated!! Thanks, Scott.
-
Hey Scott, I agree with your assessment of the directions! :( It turns out the middle piece of 1/2 inch plywood must be 4 inches wide not 1 and 1/2 as indicated in my diagram (and I would assume yours). If you have any other questions feel free to email me. I used the shanty last weekend and LOVE it (I know you will too!).
-
We Put it together last night. No holes in the floor. we want to use it as a place to get out of the wind and warm up a little. not to jig out of... we set it up on pressure treated 2x2s. these will work for the runners.. it really is big! Sets up easy with the two of us setting it up in well under 2 minutes. Nice rig for the money. Spent $57.00 in wood and hardware. can't wait to use it Saturday. The cool thing is, we have night time cusk fishing on some lakes in Maine. you set dead smelt on the bottom and check your lines once an hour. this shanty will hold 2 chairs and a small table for playing cribbage on, as well as a coleman lantern.. Really looking forward to that.
-
Scott,
Have you tried to pull the sled with the 2x2 runners? I used 2x4 and attached steel conduit to the bottom so it will slide easier. I have not tried it on the ice yet, but am debating on putting on a set of 2x2's instead. This thing is really heavy since I have 2x4 on both sides. We also have about 8 inches of snow on the ground here and with the extra weight I may not be pulling this thing anywhere.
-
Not yet, Perch hunter. We will take it out Sat am. What we did do with it was to make two handles on the pull rope. we will pull it together. I'll hold one handle in my left hand, he'll hold the other handle in his right hand... seemed to work in the yard, last night..Keep in touch.
-
Has anyone seen where to stilll get a Cabela's cheap shack? I saw them for 89 bucks, but I don't see them listed on the website anymore. Did I just miss the boat? Or is there another place I can look. E-mail me with any ideas. I didn't mean to be so slow.
Thanks, cityfishin >:( >:( >:(
-
Usually when they take them off the web-site they are out of stock. Try calling the 800 number and tell them that you saw the shelter for 79.00 bucks and sometimes they will honor the price even if they have to back order.
-
Thanks, Perchhunter. I called and they are sold out for the season and they cannot back order. I would just have to wait until next season to order. I probably won't be 79.99 then. Do you like yours? Is the fabric like a tent fabric (rip-stop nylon)? Or is it a canvas kind of material? I think I'm going to get a fish trap on clearance. It's more than I want to spend, but it's probably worth it in the long run.

My wife bought me one of these shacks a couple of years back. Reading through I see that most everyone that has one is happy with it. When I built mine I varied from the instructions a bit. Instead of 2X2 around the edges I used 2X4 (1 1/2 X 3 1/2 actual size), this allowed me enough space when folded to store my Coleman stove, LP tanks, folding chairs and table, and poles inside. This also changed the floor dimensions to 7" X 5' center and 2- 32 1/2" X 5'. I haul it on a JetSled XL that I have laid 2- 2X4's across with eye hooks to hold it down.
-
i have one and the windows cracked when i folded it up in the cold i am going to buy something else
-
just bought one last night, they're on sale for $79.99, cant wait to get it and put it together.
-
Red Eyes,
You will love it. I used mine all last winter. It is roomy, easy to assemble and drags nicely on the top of my jet sled. One tip..........be sure to buy some ice screws as once it is up, it can easily blow across the lake! :)
-
i think ill take that in mind, i sure dont want to be trolling
-
Baginwal, I also have the cabela's shanty but, I never had any problems with it blowing across the ice. I think it may have something to do with all the stuff I put in it???
The only thing I don't like about this shanty is the fact that it is heavy!!! The fact that I bring enough gear for 3 people and I am the only one who does all the work, I need a break somewhere. I'll stop whining now....
I am looking for a lighter option. I think I may leave the other two at home and go by myself more. ;D and meet up with you guys out on the ice. Now that is a good idea!!!!!
-
Red Eyes,
I bought one last year at the same price, but have yet to use it. Once I built the platform i attached 2x4 runners on the bottom, but after dragging it around the yard I realized it may be too heavy. I took off the runners and I bought a Jet Sled, I needed a big sled anyways, so I will try and put the shelter on top of the sled to see how it pulls. This shelter is alot bigger than it looks in the picture. I also put marine carpet on the inside, I though maybe the platform would get slippy when wet. Good Luck.
-
thats what i was thinking of doing, adding marine carpet, after water proofing/sealing the plywood.what thickness of plywood do u use
-
Could anyone tell me that has made this item - what it weighs(and what size plywood did you use?) Also, do you think the 150 denier polyester fabric(that this has) is better than 210 denier nylon(like some frabill's)if you've seen both? Thanks.
-
Red eyes, I only used 1/2 inch to keep the weight down. i also seen guys use 1/4 inch and then frame the bottom with 1X2 then attach foam insulation between the frame for strength and to keep the weight down.
-
Red Eyes,
I used 3/4 inch CDX plywood. I place the shanty on top of my jet sled (loaded with all my gear including gas auger). It pulls pretty easily on snow and ice.
Bob G.........I would be glad to meet up and fish together sometime. I usually fish Sandy Pond.
Walt
-
Baginwal, where is sandy pond? I don't believe I've even heard of it. ???
I was just thinking, what about a iceshanty get together here in Pa? preferably here in western pa. but, I am not opposed(?) to a road trip. What does anybody think?
-
I RECIEVED THE SHANTY YESTERDAY, ALL I NEED IS PLYWOOD AND SOME HARDWARE,THE INSTRUCTIONS LOOK A LITTLE CONFUSING, WAS IT EASY TO PUT TOGETHER?
-
Red Eyes,
Congrats! You will love it. As I mentioned earlier, it pulls real nice on top of my jet sled (for a picture see the photo section of this forum and look for the title "most economical atv yet"). Yes, it was fairly easy to put together. I also found the directions confusing, but most of it makes sense. One suggestion: My friend cut his ice holes in the shanty so that they would accomodate a 5 gallon bucket. This way, when he pulls his shanty on top of his sled, the buckets sit firmly in the holes of the collapsed shanty and also add weight to minimize any potential tip overs. :)
Good luck
-
Red Eyes,
The most confusing part of the instructions was the width of the middle section. I believe it should be 4 inches wide and the directions said something like 1 inch wide. Just cut your two end pieces then cut the middle piece last.
-
Finished the shanty friday, cant wait to get it on the ice. i set it up in the garage and thats very roomy for 2 ppl.I used 15/32 plywood, instead of the 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" peices i used 1 x 3"s , but on the 60" ones i doubled them.it turned out great. next year ill probally add a marine type carpet.
-
I ordered the Cabelas Deluxe Ice Fishing Tent Kit today.
In the ad they are somewhat vague. Does the cover include a license holder?
Thanks!!!
-
no, but i think it would be very easy to add one on
-
I've had this shanty for three years . Just went out and measured the middle board that the hinges attach to .
It is 4 " wide . If i were building mine again i would make sure i painted it before i assembled it. I've had no problems with my window's cracking . Instead of just cutting four holes in the floor i cut every corner in an oblong shape .
That way when i get three people in it we can all fish comfortably. the holes measure 27" x 8" . it also lightened it up considerably. i used 1/2 " plywood for the floor , and
2" x 2" s for the edges . i have never had any problem with it blowing away . but it did take a beating last winter in a nasty wind storm because i left it on the lake and went home . now i at least colapse it before leaving. if
it freezes to the ice . i just take my spud bar and pop it loose. i built a sled out of cross country skiis that works very well . if i could figure out how to post pictures on here i would gladly share them . i also drilled two holes
just inside one of the doors and attach a rope to it for
easy pulling across the lake when there's not much snow on it. on windy days when i'm pulling it i just leave the doors open and the wind blows right thru it. ok i'll
quit blabbing now ......have a good one.
-
Had mine for almost a year now. I used 5/8" treated plywood which upped the price a little. Cut my holes in the corners for ease of fishin 2 holes by myself. As far as blowin away...I've been in a pretty decent wsind with it by myself and hvent blown away...but I'm 6'3" 230# and I usually put my propane tanke with my Mr. Heater attached into a hole that has been partially drilled in one of the corners..simple and quick way to kind of insure that the thing wont blow away. Also, I usually throw some of the slush from drilling my holes around the thing to freeze it down for the day and then pull it up after I'm done fishing. (this is also a reason I got the treated plywood) Havent had a problem with the windows other than they fog/freeze up when I'm running my heater. Has anyone else had a problem with the inside building up large amounts of condensation when running a Mr. Heater type heater or is it just me?
-
i am thinking if getting one for 119.99 plus shipping would u recamend getting it if u go ice fishing by your self most of the time?
what are the hinges for ?
what size holes would u recamend putting in it for an 8inch aunger?
and how heavey is it ?
thanks much Ben
-
mr g
it's not just you .i get condensation real bad. usually take
a towel to wipe it dry every now and then . ( or wear a raincoat ) water gets mighty cold dripping down your neck.
benny
the hinges are for folding your shanty .
the bigger you make your holes, the lighter the shanty.
i would recomend with an 8" auger to go at least 10"
i've never weighed mine but i would say it's around 50lbs.
-
i am under the age of 16 is the license holder for the shanty or for people over the age of 16???
thanks ben
-
hey ben
the license holder is for those states that have to have a shanty license . strange huh ? shhhhhhhhhh before they think of it in your state .
john :'(
-
thats not the only reason the liscence holder is there for. In Wisconsin and i believe Minnesota as well, you are REQUIRED to have aither your name and address OR your driver's liscence number on your shanty whenever its on the ice.

So I realize that this is an extremely old post, but I've recently acquired a new in box ice tent kit. the issue I'm having is there are no instructions. So i know its a long shot but does anyone have these tucked away in a file somewhere? Or Can some one take some pics of theirs so i can get an idea of what i need? Thanks in advance!!
