Mullet or sardines for bait?

Has anyone ever tried mullet fish (not the hair cut) for bait?  Any word on sardines?  I cant find smelt around here but I have access to both of these.....

Any experience is helpful!

I've caught pike on both this winter. I think sardines are better: more flash and scent.
