i typically use a a long mono or floro leader...about 8-10feet with a long shank single point hook...i place one right at a cut between two shelves...the lake i fish is crystal clear and walleye typically hit jigs at night...so my advice may not be the best..but my big boys do come off of the tip-up..just not my numbers.

All i fish is tipups for walleye. I use braided line to 8 pound mono with a 10-8 size single red hook depending on the bait. Most of my big fish have come fishing small fatheads or small shiners.
without ice i guess i would have to go to class
