It's just common sense that if you cover more water,  you'll increase your chances.
A vast majority of people don't do that on ice,  it's those few that present their higher percentage.
I totally agree with expectations and what's considered successful.
On Schroon I've found those lake trout are very lazy and picky .Tip ups have more success when covering just a smaller footprint.
Good luck out there and hopefully the shorelines are good to get on Saturday for my first outing there on Saturday.
I'm not fishing the northern end.

Some of the best walking conditions I've seen on Schroon in quite some time.  7-8" ice everywhere we went.  Fished below Adirondack today, good 8" glare ice, however some big wet cracks opened up, and it reminded me of Lake George when the ice would rip and groan.  Abundance of 17" Lakers this year for me.  Venison meatball sandwiches made the day complete.

The jaw jacker bite was the saving grace the other day without them I would have went 0/1 on the jig  Never saw so many people off eagle.  Understandable given the season we had.

Bunch of nice Pike caught today.  Mine could have been the biggest, 17.5 lbs.  Weird day, sun, clouds, rain, thunder. Like ice fishing in June!.  8" ice still, edges fine.

Thanks man.  You know, every time we go out we have a plan. Most of the time we laugh at the end of the day, saying, well, that didn't work out!  This time it did.  Only tipup I had set at halfway in the water column, 19 fow, weeds, near a deep drop off channel.  Large hunt.  Oh, and 6 lb fluorocarbon leader, and size 14 treble.

6 lb. leader and small treble. I've heard others say that's effective. How often do you get bit off?

Oh and congrats on that monster!

Oh and congrats on that monster!

I don't target pike with my tipups rigged similar to this, I intend to catch perch and crappies with those rigged with 6 pound mono leader with size 12 treble. When pike do hit these, the hook being so small results in the hook catching the lip or corner of the mouth just at the last moment when the pike is trying to expel it. With no part of the line rubbing on any teeth, you will not lose a pike due to a biteoff, only from trying to horse it in too fast.

He has my 6 pound line pike record beaten by quite a bit, mine was 13 pounds. That took a cool head and great skill with the line handling to ice that fish. I know it can be done though, just keep your cool and let the fish run as many times as it needs to.

Thanks guys.  I seldom target Pike, my rig is set up for Salmon and Lakers, but over the years I have caught some nice Pike on that setup, just got to let them do what they want to do, and eventually you can ease them up through the hole, like an old man exiting a warm bed!  ;)   My leader setup is this, 7ft brown Maxima 8lb or 10lb to a tiny barrel swivel, then 15" 6lb Fluorocarbon to a size 14 treble. This way I can change that 15" piece often when it gets tangled up or scraped up without changing the whole leader. A small weight is put above the barrel swivel.

Beautiful Pike.  Nice job landing him on 6lb test.  Looks like you got away from the crowds.  I tried off Adirondack last Thursday 2 or 4 camps south of the creek had a few runners but could not set the hook. But it was a perfect day sunny no wind and about 40 F.  May try this Thursday too. I'll pm you for some advice.

Planning to head to Schroon this weekend for the first time with some friends. First time for all of us. Got 10 lb braided line with 8 lb fluorocarbon for the end. Any tips on where to launch from and try? There's the world of life launch and Schroon lake beach. Everywhere I read, people say to head towards the island. What's a good dept set up for tip ups? We've always targeting pike, but this time looking for Lakers.

Schroon bait is trading liability for cash and apparently is hosting something this weekend.
