I was only giving Ed crap before he flies to PR.  I know nothing of that stuff Tony, you know I lament the north end!

My mistake, I quoted the wrong post!  And yes, north end sucks!  Old timers who taught me Schroon Lake would always say, fish the north end if you want to chart fish, fish south end if you want to catch fish!  There are some spots in the north basin that are good, however.  ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

There are I'm told but not for me.  Tell you what I had a blast in the boat in the narrows before things locked up.  You'd think the lakers never ate.

Funny you say that, I've talked with guys who have had the same experience this year through the ice, on Schroon.  They seem very hungry.  But not for me, no fish today.

Tony are the local food spots still closed?
Pitkins, Trail-break, (the old Drakes) Decesares are open.  All the rest are closed.

Actually that area skimmed over yesterday and we had a couple inches of snow, so this afternoon it all looks the same, not good!

Only fished this lake a couple times and never had much luck for lake trout. Went Saturday off Dock St in around 45 FOW and marked quite a few but no takers. Tried minnows, spoons, tubes, jigging raps etc. They seemed to respond more to dead sticking but didn’t wanna chase much.

Still pretty new to ice fishing. Any advice for what depth ranges, lures/strategy’s or general areas worth targeting?

Thanks!

When setting tipups on Schroon don't overlook the shallows.  Big Lakers when on the feed will often cruise the shallows to trap baitfish.  A very nice Laker was taken Sunday in 5ft  of water. Pays to set one or 2 in close.  Big pike too.

My son and I hit the lake at the north end on Saturday. Good ice and clean walking. We got 2 lake trout. One on a jigging rod and one on a tip up.
Awesome day and good cold weather for making more ice.
Enjoy

Do any of you folks target smelt on Schroon?

I’ll be heading up this weekend to fish Champlain with some college friends and will be staying north of Schroon. We had planned on heading into the Saranac Lake area for some smelt fishing one day on some of my old college fishing spots, but the thought of fishing Schroon crossed my mind since it’s closer.

You can PM me if you rather not put that information out on there for all to see.

Thanks in advance.

I only targeted them once when I was younger but we did catch a few with a little effort

I think it's going to be around 4 inches total for much of the area, 4-9 for most of the Adirondacks

Last I saw the larger accumulations will be to the south of Schroon.

But with that said the last storm was forecasted for 6-8” near me and I got 34”

Here’s to hoping...

Not many places for them to go in summer so I tend to fish shallower also in winter they like to explore areas where they can’t in the summer I usually fish 40 and less. 40s been my favorite starting number shallow or deeper sets from there

Jigging them this summer via spot lock was 100x more viable than in the winter.  Actually was a lot of fun.

Spot lock is a game changer I just read your reply on the George thread, we use it from everything to river walleye, Boulder blackfish or mid lake smallies it’s crazy how accurate the locations are the garmin unit was a little funky on my buddies rig at first in the river but after a recalibration it was spot on

Correct.  My fishing buddy went out off the boat launch today and caught a nice mess of smelt. Measured 11" ice.
