Schroon derby March 7 anyone fishing?!

I’ll be heading up from Massachusetts to fish the derby this year. Have a group of 9 of us heading up. It’s been 5 years since I’ve fished the tournament, always have a great time. Good luck to everyone!

Has anyone been fishing paradox this year, or fishes it regularly thru the ice?
I have fished it several times this year (including yesterday) and have a couple burning questions concerning my experience with panfish on the east end of the lake.  Would love to pm with somebody that has experience here too.  Thanks

Fished today.  No snow on the ice basically 6-7 inches slush ice frozen solid and then maybe 8 inches or so good ice.  Easy walking/dragging.  I was on the south end of the lake.

I have more experience there then most... just for home from there.

What’s your question?

What’s your question?
I think I’ve already asked you this and you were unfamiliar...but my question is about crappies.  Found a fair amount of them on the flasher and they seem fairly active.  I work a jig (small tungsten) above they’re head, they come up and cover for a while and then go back down.  I’ve caught some of them but lately I can try for hours and this is the outcome.  They’re not interested in minnows, I’ve tried various color jigs, I’ve tried different presentations, etc...
The only things I havent tried is straight up dropping a night crawler or fishing after dark for them.  Just wondering if this is how it goes on paradox or if I’m missing something here.

Sounds crazy but upsize... the z viber catches alot of finicky fish surprisingly I would also go with 1/100th Waxie jig or some sort of small vertical sitting tungsten jig with one spike nose hooked

I'm not sure if this is even correct but I seem to remember hearing crappie feed down so you'd be better off with your lure under them??   Again I could be dead wrong but it seems to me I've heard that.

Sorry to tell ya bud they feed up just like most other fish eyes are on top of there heads facing up if you below a crappie you’re almost certain not to get a reaction out of them

Thanks guys for the responses.

Yup, they definitely feed up.  I will certainly try a vertical jig as well....that’s something I didn’t try.

I like vmc tungstens the waxie jig in 1/100 or 1/64 can produce big lots of times when other people are catching anything

Not to belabor the point but this is exactly why people use tip downs.

A tip down isn’t meant for fish that are not necessarily only feeding downward

No need to be sorry - I could swear I heard that about some panfish.

Only place I ever caught crappies is in water you can't eat them from!

That place gets pounded early season by crappie fisherman.  By this time of year they are super finicky majority of the time but you can also hit that sweet spot at any given time and limit out in 30 mins.  It's very hit or miss

Crappies will turn on at sunset and get very active for 30 minutes or so.  We start with vertical jig presentations and switch to tiny tungsten jigs with grubs as it gets darker.   You need a spring bobber rod to detect upward bites.  The bites are almost undetectable and you need a headlamp to see spring bobber  movement .  Some of the big ones (13-14 inchers) barely lift the bait.  Cut two holes close together so you can get a second line down there in a hurry or school will move on.  Jump around to find them. Hope this helps.
