To my knowledge,  the state dec  site is the only public access point.  Its not the best of access location.  Sketchy road leading in to the shallow basin.
It's a mile trek to the main basin.  A machine becomes necessary and a snowmobile preferred over an ATV.
Use caution going through the narrows between the basins.

Other than that , you'll need permission from a landowner for access.

I second that.  The dec launch/ parking area is on 74 a little further east than half of the lake. Be advised the large NYS DEC public launch site sign is currently not hanging. You will see the big posts where it hangs and i think there is a much smaller sign that is posted. Keep your eyes peeled, it comes up quick.

Also, piece of advice.. do NOT think you can go down that road in a 2WD car with snow cover or ice.. ask me how i know :)

Looking for a recommendation on a place to stay overnight and purchase live bait near Schroon Lake. Looking to head up that way next week. Thank you.

Maple leaf motel is ok. It's on rt 9 about 1/2 mile south off exit 28 . It's a mile north of the northern access launch behind Stewart's.
Nothing fancy but it's about the only game in town.

As for bait,  I generally get bait at the crossroads store in chestertown ( exit 25 ? ) on my way to schroon from the south prior.
Options are pretty limited

The only other bait option I can think of is Fish307 in Queensbury as you are heading north.

I wouldn't rely on the sunoco nor the shop in town at all.
I wish someone would resurrect the Mt. Severance store ..

Howdy Fellas,

I am going up to schroon in a couple of weekends with a group.  It will be our first time fishing in the area. From what I have read sounds like the ice should be good to go.
I will mainly be targeting panfish, but I was wondering if a gaff is legal to use through the ice. Would hate to lose a monster at the hole if its an option.

sometimes when you are fishing for other fish, unexpected giants will come along.  something Schroon has been known to deliver.   Gaffs are illegal at nearby lake george, its a valid question.

oh I know what he meant but why schroon for panfish? I can think of many better lakes, always hook into the odd laker but never felt the need to bring a gaff along with me

Gaffs are illegal at nearby lake george, its a valid question.

Where is that in the regulations? Gaffs are illegal for freshwater in NY except when ice fishing

"Use of gaffs:
Use or possession of gaffs or gaff hooks is prohibited when fishing in freshwater, including the Hudson River upstream of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, except when ice fishing."
http://www.eregulations.com/newyork/fishing/general-regulations/

There is no reference for gaffs in the Special Regulations for Lake George/ Lake Champlain here:

Generally, gaffs are legal for ice fishing in NY.  I dont see anything in the regs that prohibits them on schroon...

Just get a lip holder.  You can use it all year and won’t injure under size fish.

A gaf is not a bad idea to have along in the sled at schroon.  We've used 1 once or twice.
I don't carry one on lake George as I'm targeting lake trout and their regs are funky too.

Just be a man and lip it. Leave the gaff home ;D... I would keep driving right past schroon if I wanted panfish but that’s just me.

headed to either paradox or Brant lake.
Thinks its slushy but I heard there is still solid ice.
Hope the fish cooperate!

The Sunoco no longer sells live bait FYI. Go to schroon lake bait shop in town. He moved from across Stewarts. He is now down the street across from Tops. Nice and honest guy. Get there early.
