Never fished in the Adirondacks, but I'd love to try Schroon next week.  Only info I have is three boat launches on the DEC map.  Are any of them plowed in winter?  Any other public parking available?  Thanks in advance.

Use the north boat ramp in town the one in the south end of the lake is where the river runs out of the lake lots of currents there I don't it's a safe place to access the lake. I never hear about people using it

Correct,  do not access from the south ramp in Horicon.

The north launch is by far the easiest

Bring a strong back,  legs, and arms.
A young kid works too.
Gotta think from last week,  20 plus ice, usual pressure ridges, plenty sleds getting their day .
Yes its machine time in all aspects, just please be respectful and responsible.

In 3 weeks, well,  again be respectful because conditions will be different.
I'll probably be walking to protect the shoreline

Thanks for the info!  Heading up on the morning.  Never tried to catch a trout through ice.  If I find even one, I’ll consider it a highly successful trip.

fished schroon friday ,saturday, sunday and a few hrs monday morning
great weather , great fishing
friday in the light drizzle we had a few moments of feeding lakers where we landed 10 but no big ones
all from 12-21 inches
saturday was a little breezy but still a nice day on the water
we moved to a new area and had steady life all day
we ended up with 15 lakers to 23inches
sunday was not only gorgeous weather but we had em dialed in all morning crushing em with a few doubles on at once and better quality
we ended the day with over 30 lakers to 28inches
all jigging done in 40-50 feet
monday morning we only fished 3 hrs in the snow and jigged a half dozen to 24inches
ice was like 2 feet thick and easy truck access
will be back for the tournament in two weeks
good luck and catch em up 🐟🐟🐟🐟

Only thing wrong with that post is it doesn’t include a report for Tuesday 😎.  Awesome trip and great report

Fished Schroon for the first time ever this past saturday. Fishing was steady. The lakers in there sure are fun. Managed 9 lakers from 13 to 19 inches. from 40 to 60 fow. anything deeper was dead. Definitely will be making a return trip again.

we must have been in the wrong spot then we fished the derby 2 days in a row with over 50 tip ups and jigging and landed 5 little lakers 13 inches to 21 inches and everyone near us and there was plenty caught 0. most  didnt even get a flag. im not being negative but schroon seems to lack quality lakers and salmon and quantity. some big pike in there though . i think there was only 10 legal fish weighed in the 2 day derbie. love the color of the lakers . we had lots of fun and will probably fish it again next year
congratulations to all winners you earned it.

There are very high quality pike, Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass in schroon... As far as the laker and salmon population, I agree with you. Quality is not there.

Right there with you. Frustrating weekend for sure. 2 full days and only 9 small Lakers caught  between 2 guys the first day and 4 the second day. We moved all over after giving up on our morning spots both days. Hardly marking any fish on the flashers. Fish anywhere from 25-90 fow. Tip ups for the first year fishing this derby outfished jigging. On a positive note I was glad to take home the vexlar from the raffle.

I Agree with you about quality and size of the lake trout. Most of the time your catching small 15-20 inch fish which are fun, but there are definitely some big boys few and far between. As far as quantity though, I think Schroon is loaded with them. Ive found that location will make or break a day of jigging up there though. Ive definitely had worse days than some, constantly having to move spots just to find bait and mark any fish at all. But there are also days where theres 4 or 5 fish chasing your bait on the screen all day. Can be a tricky lake to fish, always downsizing to get a bite.
Hunting trouts.

Check out the bay below Eagle Point in November during spawning season.  The numbers and size of the Lake Trout will amaze you.
