That being said, if I could do only one thing, hands down it would be hunting Elk!  Those who do, know what I mean! Plus, they are DELICIOUS! 😃

Oh man those elk steaks you gave me at Hearthstone one time.  It was the best game meat I've ever had hands down ;D  I have hunted whitetails in NY since I was 14 but I am seriously considering an elk hunt out west in the next 3 or 4 years just to do that at least once.  Something I have always dreamed of.

Haha, glad you enjoyed them John!
Had to take a break last year as I blew my wad setting up the salmon boat but if you’re seriously thinking ahead, apply for an elk pref point for CO. You have until April 1st and it greatly increases your chances for the better units.  Obviously, the more points you accumulate, the better your odds for them Elk Steaks!! Pref points are $50 each which isn’t horrible. Archery is mostly OTC but for MZ you usually need 2-3 points and for rifle, it depends more on the unit you want to hunt but I have often drawn a first rifle season tag with one point.
Anyway, sorry to distract from Ice talk, but it’s Elk! 😆

That's exciting.  Shoot me a text Sunday we'll trade notes.

Never been on the ice at Schroon, but I'm making a trip up that way Monday Tuesday. Would love to get into some lakers. Any advice for a first timer on schroon? Would I have a better chance getting a laker on my hook on schroon or lake George? Appreciate the help in advance.

My advice would be to read some of the 74 pages of Schroon Lake gold that occurred on this thread before your post. Lots of good information, maybe too much. Just don't focus on fishing too deep and if you're not marking fish move

Any public access on schroon should be fine. Advice there, downsize.
Second answer is:
Lake George

Hot Tuna and FishnChef

Thanks for the input. There’s certainly a bunch of info on these 74 pages and I’m absolutely soaking it up. I did decide on LG and fished it the last two days. The bite was pretty weak so maybe I’ll head to Schroon next. Thanks again!

only good thing about the sleds is they make us walkers a trail. maybe the warm weather will melt some off before i get there. ive only fished off the launch in town and was wondering if the fishing is better at other end of lake and is there a easy place to get on. lol

Sleds buzzing on a trail thru sets because that's where the others went are annoying.  Not easier for the fisher.
Fishing wasn't any different north , middle or south.
Access middle or south is a hill unless on east side.
Snow sucked on a drag. Its definitely machine time until the shorelines start to give way , then please leave the home

Is the ice thick enough to drive trucks on at Schroon?

I just got into the laker fishing at the end of last ice season. been out on george 2x now and had banner days. My wife is hooked on it too now. Want to try out schroon and was wondering if the north basin or south basin is better for lakers. been studying the map and got a couple spots picked out. I have also heard and read that downsizing is important in schroon. Was wondering a good depth to target too. Any help appreciated. Thanks
