So did anyone take the leap of faith today on schroon?
Seen 2 vehicles at narrows but not on the ice. We went to north end to an empty lot.
You could definitely get on the ice and I ventured out a ways with the spud . Easily punching through with a few hard whacks. Figured 3" at best . Nobody in my crew were interested in that.
Headed to Minerva where there was a solid 10 plus inches of ice.  A hardside out there .
If you don't mind chasing flags all day and catching hammer handle pike , it's cool. We usually do it once a year and this was that day.

Be safe if you decide to give schroon a try, it's sketchy and maybe next weekend for us.

There were people out there. My vehicle was one of the ones up top.  The ice was fine the edges are shot.  I'll be there tomorrow but may need waders to get on.  Some old holes were large.

This was getting off the ice.

anyone willing to share where to access the narrows area of schroon. Iv always fished off boat launch or Fowler and im curious to explore some other areas, those are just the only access points i know of. We were out there last weekend and got into some smaller fish. Nothing of any size but was good to be back out there.

Looking for a place to go Wednesday and it doesn’t sound to me like schroon is going to be good enough. I’ve never fished Minerva and wouldn’t mind trying it out but I can’t find any info on the lake. There seems to be a state park, can I park there?  How hard is it to find decent fish?  Any help will be appreciated.
A bad day fishin still beats a good day at work!!

We left schroon at 7:45 am. There were no people on the lake at public access.  At those access points you did not need waders to get on ice but you needed faith of the ice and abilities.

Minerva is simple.  Town beach.  Beach road. Simple Google map search.
Pike are all slimers but kept us fishing instead of on the couch. It's a once a season gig for us.
Tomorrow ( 12:30 today and up for 20 hrs)  is another day to walk water as was last weekend.  There is good solid ice in Essex county on various places other than schroon.
I'm an old man but not a fool . Maybe why I got to be this age.

True that,  it's being surrounded by the outdoors and good people that keep me going. I need a miracle every day 😀.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year Frank.

Good fishing with you.

The ice is decent the edges are toast and the lake rose at least a foot and a half while we were out....getting creative to get on/off. (Apparently an otter can float more than I thought it could.)

Hi all, I was planning on coming up to Schroon on Saturday, but the forecast is calling for temps around 40 degrees and rain on Friday.  Of those who have been our already and/or know how the lake typically reacts, do you think there will be fishable ice on Saturday? Its a 4 hour drive for me so don't want to waste my time.  Should I abandon hope and take the boat out one more time here in NJ?

Appreciate the insights

Derek

If there is more rain it could be impossible to get on.  It was already very difficult yesterday morning and the lake rose again while I was out there.

Anyone know the ice conditions at Loon Lake?  I'm heading up that way New Years day.  I was going to try to hit Schroon but my girlfriend will not want to deal with planking and sketchy ice.  I don't think 5 days will change things much since the rivers/streams are up so high.  I've got some back up ideas but wanted to try a new body of water.  I'm also curious if the only access is at the boat ramp.  Thanks in advanced.
