You regulars to Schroon have any tips on catching smelt. Been up several times for Lakers but never had any luck on smelt.

Not sure about schroon, but I caught a lot on Fourth, Indian, and West Caroga. 2-4lb test, UL rod and any small, slightly heavy jig or spoon with spike. I wouldn’t even bother with spring bobbers

Just be sure you’re not using mono in deep water.

George ….  or Jasper I suppose.....      The only time I was exposed to it we caught them non stop on a Hali with a single spike. The fish finder was solid with smelt.

This was right off Fowler Road.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.

A number of us were planning on hammering schroon to no end this year.  I expect a lot of 430am starts to ensure parking availability.

Once the good area freezes probably be there every weekend until George is ready.

I'm thinking of a return visit by you Saturday.

I'm heading up to the north end tomorrow morning. If anyone has any new info on the ice thickness, or places to watch out for please let me know! I'll be sure to post conditions when I come back - thanks

Have not seen anyone fishing this week, but with the cold we had here this week I would expect at least 5" north end. As with all early ice, check as you go.

Jon, I might be interested.  Ice around here is going to be shot.

Nice Pat.  I think Shawn is in too.  Either Saturday or Monday.  I may do all three.  Trying to get a giant deal done at work, if it comes in today I'll be up there first thing tomorrow.

Old trick- Tie a foot or so of red yarn onto your line, with a couple of split shot so it sinks. No hook. Jig. They bite the yarn and their teeth get caught in it. Really works!

It will and that's the problem. The ice sheet lifts there, then the edges are further from shore.  If you get on tomorrow and the river is rising expect the edges to be further away when you get off.  That is how I became anointed in schroon lake water

I've heard of rope flies for targeting hard mouth toothy critters like gar but I've never heard of it ice fishing.

Mainly used for smelt suspended under the ice but maybe he was talking about something else?
