Any report on how much ice there is on lake? Any reports of the narrows? Hoping ice holds for the weekend.

As of yesterday don't see any problem getting 4-wheelers on at Fowler or Boat launch. 6" of water to go through to good ice. But with this warm weather persisting and the rain coming I'll bet shoreline will get much worse by weekend. Last year I used canoe to port my and my daughters across 20'-30' of open water at Fowler to safe ice. As far as ice on main lake (at least North end) there is plenty to last beyond this weekend. Had 18"-20" at shanty out in 122' of water. If you can get on there should be no issue with enough ice - at least at North end.

Checked Schroon this afternoon.  Shoreline directly on front of Fowler badly broken up, however to the right and left should provide easy quad access.  Same with public launch in town.  To the right of launch is good, just bear left as you get on as the brook is opening up things to the right.  Narrows looked good.  Talked with a couple guys just coming off, had 19" good ice once you're on.  They had the best Laker day they've ever had on Schroon.  They were on with a wheeler.  Today was 52*, but it gets colder after today, snow threat has also gone away, at least the heavy stuff.

thanks for the report.  I was getting worried they could possibly cancel the derby this weekend.  This year and last year the edges have been iffy.  I wonder if they have thought about moving the derby earlier in the year at all ???

If it wasn't cancelled last year it will never be cancelled. Last year was much, much worse.  It has been a talk for years about moving the derby to Feb, but the F&G stubbornly refuses to even consider it.  Lets face it, weather patterns have changed, for whatever reasons.  We seem to be running into these iffy conditions on a yearly basis  now.  Guys usually travel a great distance to fish this derby, but when they see their lakes thawed out and snow gone many stay home, imo.

I like to fish 45-65 fow . Stagger your depths of your set, not the depth of water.
Example. Put some 2-3 foot on bottom.  Mid depth and 10 foot down.
We have caught some Lakers 10' under the ice and always the chance at a salmon

Have never used a trap there.  Murder them jigging when they are interested.

4 feet of 8 lb mono leaders,  size 8 hooks.
Becarefull,  if your in pike territory.

As for jigging,  I been mostly jigging .
Schroon is pretty stained color and the aquaview may not work to well.
I use a vex,  downsize your jigs . Been having luck with a green uv forage minnow jig ( single hook ) tipped with a small white twister tail

Took these pics an hour ago at boat ramp
I don't see any atv access anywhere
Be safe not stupid if your planning on heading up
And with 2-3 inches of rain later and tom
You'll need a boat to get on good ice

I def would leave any machines home
And bring a Jon boat or long plank for ice access
And not to mention the 30-40 mph winds for saturday as well
Unsafe shorelines and crapty weather don't sound fun at all
Good luck and be smart out there
No fish or tourney is worth it

Sounds like your mind is made up Mickey or you are trying to thin the herd for this weekend?

We are all adults, let people do as they wish and enjoy the couch and some tv if you prefer.

Also your forecasting skills need attention:

Not at all
I just no that a lot of people travel great distances to fish there
And weather your an adult ,old man or child I'm just giving my opinion
I'd rather be fishing but I'm not taking any chances
My fridge is loaded with plenty of beer and food so I'm covered
It's a shame cause the bite has been real good
It's time to get my boats ready for the spring striper season
It's right around the corner

Off Adirondack

Eagle Pt.

Hayes Rd Access

Right of Town Launch

Left of Town Launch

Upper Point of the Narrows

A lot of the Western shoreline looks like this

Off Fowler

Directly out from Fowler

Narrows

Off Fowler looking toward the Island

Rogers Brook in town has opened up a lot last couple days

Few observations from my trip around the Lake today.  Western shoreline has deteriorated much worse than the East side. Many good spots to get on along East Shore Drive.  My concern would be the old holes that have opened up and my be covered by several inches of snow Sat.  Most dangerous area would be off Fowler, which is down to 8" ice according to a fisherman who was coming off as I was taking pics. Large open water channel is in the center off Fowler.  You can get on at the Town Launch, 10 paces past where everyone has been using.  You just need to bear left quickly as Rogers Brook is really opening up.
