The snow is patchy and a lot of it is blown off or frozen into what must have been slush. There were a few drifts but they were frozen and I walked on top of them for the most part. My microspikes were crunching for the majority of my drag.

Almost looks like the Derby out there today.  Guys fishing off Fowler, around island, off beach, in front of the brook, all over the narrows clear to the other side, the bay below narrows on the west side.  Did not go to the south end.  It has barely gone over zero last few days so lake is putting on crazy ice.

We had some real nice ice quakes out there today... not a bad day fishing either great start to the laker count for me for the season 30 iced before noon

Well done!! Bite was terrible at the narrows. Some interest, few chasers but really tough to get any to commit.

Have you seen the sizes of the pike that have won and placed the last few years at the Derby?    ;)

19, 21, 24 lbs.  Same guys every year.  Guys that have it figured out produce some really nice toothy critters.

Dang. That's a gator. You catch that in the shallows or deeper water? I've had pike hit my laker setups in 50-60'. I had 1 hit a salmon set 2' under the ice also.

MJB - Im sure you can catch fish like that in the shallows and deeper water. At the end of November I caught a 22lb northern during open water in 4' of water on a windy/ cloudy day.... water temp was 45*....and this was on a lake that is Schroons Neighbor.

Mealworm - I would like to hear that long story about that fish...storys about fish of that size are never a waste of time.
