I'll read about it.  I'm pretty sure I'm done for the year.  The boss told me the basement needs cleaning.  Better now than when I can get a boat in the lake.

Elevation and snow cover are the answers you are looking for.  Most likely the lake will be solid again, right? most likely the edges will button up, right?   Do you think anyone will find an old shanty hole, or a weak spot from an incoming creek or put a machine through?

Those are some fun question marks for tourney insurers and tourney organizers.

Does the Derby have to be insured?  If so wouldn't you think they would have something to say about having the Derby under questionable conditions.

If it is the same as it was 10 years ago, you have to get a permit for any tournament with more than 20 people.   I am pretty sure you have to have proof of liability insurance to get that permit.

I've seen lots of stupid things ice fishing in my life.  Holding the tourney in those conditions ranks among the top.

Shcroonlkr are you seeing anyone out on the ice? The edges look shot, just curious if anyone is visibly out.

Well, I guess if those guys don't go through tonight we should be in a halfway decent position. Could be dangerous in spots if it freezes and covers in snow though. I'll take my chances. Spud in spud out.

...and your gear...? Assuming you are fishing, of course. Why else would you cross open water in a jet sled? I mean c'mon....

use a second sled for gear, tow it behind you like a trailer

You are taking yourself into a false sense of security.  One swim was good enough for me and that's when the edge was closer to shore.

I'm with you Jon...absolutely irresponsible.

This chart is a forecast for Schroon River below the lake.  Bottom line, Lake will continue to rise, continue to pull away from shore, despite low temps in the low single numbers Fri & Sat mornings.

Thanks, I want all of us on Ice Shanty to be well informed, lots of guys travel distances at a fair expense to come up here and ice fish this lake, many with their kids.  There are a lot of guys that don't check things out on the internet, they just figure if it isn't cancelled it must be safe. Going to be a lot of ticked off people when they take a look at that shoreline. Then again, maybe 2 nights of cold will button things up.  We'll see.

it is absolutely insane anyone would hold a derby in those conditions.

better yet, its crazy if anyone wants to even attend a derby in those conditions. Not worth it.

Tony,

How does the river look above the lake if that is good may be worth trying to fish that. I'm sure there is now ice on it I'm wondering about the flow and height.

Thanks
Will

I appreciate you guys diligence. I depended on your posts when trying to learn the lake and now when not to make the drive up. Thanks. Hope to meet some of you on the ice next year.

The outright lies of the organization running the tourney are inexcusable.  Facebook post 2 hours ago:

Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club Ice Fishing Derby There is more than enough ice out on the lake to fish. People will be bringing ATVs this year. Everyone is to go out on the lake at their own discretion. See everyone for the derby this weekend!

ATV'S are they nuts?  Two guys showed up at Eagle Sunday at 230pm with 2 ATV'S and took my word for it when I said no chance.  I really am shocked to read that last update.

Does seem bizarre to have a derby with edges like whats pictured.  That being said, with the weather through sat, by sunday/monday it should be locked up all around again no?  I know i am planning on going out tuesday with any luck for my last day of the season.
