You guys know your stuff! Was wondering if someone could talk about rigging. Everything I have is for small stuff generally. I guess I need to know what to use for a main line and what to use for a tippet? Or do you guys go right off your main line to your offering and skip a tippet? (For Lakers)

Thanks in advance

Thanks SJORD!

Quick question - I am on ebay and see some of the braided stuff suggests it is tip up backing

1. Is there a difference? Or is that fine for a spinning reel?
2. Is there a brand you prefer/recommend?
3. Does color matter much?

Thanks again

This is the setup I have on my Heritage tipups.  One full roll of 30lb braided tipup line, to a barrel swivel.  Then 6ft of 8lb Maxima brown mono to a tiny barrel swivel, then 18inches of 6lb fluorocarbon to a sz 14 treble hook.  I place one splitshot sinker above the tiny barrel swivel, and another one 6" above the hook.  That gets hunts down quicker, and the smaller sinker above the hook seems to prevent lively hunts from tangling your tippet, as does the double swivel.  That system serves me well with lakers and salmon, and if I'm fishing toothy critters I increase the tippet poundage.  The brown Maxima is something I learned from Fran Betters, who hand tied all his fly fishing leaders with Maxima brown, saying it disappeared in the tea colored waters of the Adirondacks.

They are a small to medium size minnow that look like a smelt,  and they are very lively, which sometimes can tangle you line.  I get mine at Crossroads in Brant Lake, Exit 25 on the Northway.

Very lively is an understatement. Had 1 hunt yesterday I caught 3 9-10" perch on 7flags. That thing had like 10 scales left on its body, looking real haggard but still kept going

Never herd of the dam things - I'm 175 miles away it seams like a world away! Now I get to dream about this for the next ten months! But that will give me lots of time to show up prepared and ready and set some stuff up JUST FOR the LG region. Thanks again guys

Wow , the narrows looks way worse then 3 days ago.
Like I said , the reports from the tournament ought to be interesting.
I'd be surprised if it's not cancelled.
Honestly I don't think even with the low temperatures, it will lock the shoreline up enough, especially with all the traffic.
Good luck folks , stay safe and the fat lady is about to sing

Talked to a woman at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club today, and she indicated that they are going forward with the derby. She also indicated that there is plenty of ice, although the shorelines are a little open, but people are finding their way on the lake.

That's cool that the show must go on . I have seen a few up there over the years  :)
Yes there is enough ice to fish it's just going to be tough for some .
Good luck folks .
My last days of ice season are hopefully 3-12 & 13 . It's been shortened but a good season.
Time to get the boat prepared for the Great Lakes and Hudson stripers after then

No snow here, little sleet, then rain, then below zero next couple nights, crazy non-winter continues, for now.
