Took a young local lad out fishing on Schroon last week, north end.  Lots of pike, pickerel, and perch, nothing great, but the youngster was chasing flags all day!

BIG WARNING, after a quick burst of snow this morning an open area was revealed on the south end of the Narrows, very nasty looking.  I took a photo but photobucket is down this morning for maintenance.  Will post a pic as soon as I can.

Can't buy smelt. Crossroads has plenty of other live bait though. If you can catch smelt on Schroon (there are plenty) you can use them as bait only on Schroon the day you catch them.

Thanks for the info: I will certainly take all precautions.

Someone walking across the lake yesterday fell in and drown. Be careful out there. http://poststar.com/news/blotter/police-man-drowned-in-schroon-lake-after-snowshoeing-accident/article_08e23791-8e05-5f46-93bc-0701dfe55584.html

Few things about this article. the unfortunate gentleman who lost his life had health issues that may have caused him to get confused and wander off the south end boat launch.  That area is never safe, even in the coldest of winters, too much current at that outlet.  2 days ago I passed there going to Crossroads for bait and it was wide open, with just a little ice by the launch.  If you want good ice, the Narrows north is the place to be.  There is a pressure ridge developing on the northern part of the Narrows, which is where a jeep went through in 2012.  I know guys have been fishing off Eagle Pt.  and a few off Adirondack, but I just don't like what I see on the south basin.  With the warm weather forecasted til Wed. I wouldn't fish there yet, especially since the are much safer areas to go to.

I think it has to do with the bait certification laws that went into place a number of years ago.

Made it out on the north end of Schroon today. There were a lot of fishermen out today and a lot of tipups all over. The ice was 10-12 inches of good solid ice. Drilled about 50 holes and managed 3 lakers with the biggest one being 23 inches. All were released. Had a good time. Saw 2 other guys catch one on a tipup.

I fished out there Sunday.
We had 4.5" under us. The shoreline looked like a classic last walk off in April when we left at 4 yesterday.  :-\
It was really punky with water coming up on top. I personally wouldn't fish it after what I saw yesterday until we get another good cold shot. Some may disagree.
1 short fish for my efforts. Tough day.
