Any updates?  I'll be up Friday and Saturday.  Maybe I can get out there for a few hours.

Once you get one jigging, you'll be hooked! Much fun and very addicting!

Entire north basin is now frozen, from Narrows up.  Should thicken pretty quick,  BUT, with the skiff of snow we had last night it all looks the same, which is scary.

^ X2 What that dude said!
I like using tipups, but rarely for lake trout. If you get one jigging. Spare yourself fooling around with tipups at all.
You'll be wasting your time when you could be catching.

What are you jigging with? Hali, Swedish pimple?

Sounds awesome!

PCS:  For Lake Trout, Swedish Pimples and Tube Jigs are my go to's.   The pimples in silver or white, the tube jigs in white.  Hali's are too small for lakers, IMO.

Yep!
#3 white pimple.

Yeah what he said. Look at the other Schroon Lake threads and do some reading rather than starting another looking for the same info....

Yes i have looked at other posts and was looking for more information. I don't understand whats wrong with asking about a place to park and ice conditions.   I thought this site was fisherman exchanging information. No need for negative comments. Anyone who would like to reply with some actual information thanks. To you others thanks for nothing.

Dude, there are some die-hard dead sea north ice fisherman on here....  Fowler road would probably be your best bet.  Go there its north of stewarts from across the high school.  That typically freezes first.  Its MEH lake at best.  There are far better lakes to go to up north that fish better for lakers and salmonids when Lake George won't freeze.    Bring plenty of beer while on this lake.....If you don't hold your mouth right they don't bite...

Adkrs,

I'd like to get some of your perch bait for my dinner.
Is it easy to find a spot to productively fish for smelt?
Thanks.

To be quite honest, we tried a new spot today. Didn't go out far at all. Few flags. Bunch of small perch. Marked a lot of suspended schools. I don't have the smelt experience to say it's easy to find them...but today it seemed easy. Fishing 25-60 ft depending on the hole

Day 2 of my schroon lake laker legacy saga..much of the same. Tried deeper. Nada. Ice was fine on the north side. 4-5"of good ice. Few inches of snow on top. I think the snow will get blown off the lake.

Sustained 20mph winds got me off the lake today. And for whatever reason a roof pole on my hub shattered when packing up to move spots. Sat shantiless from about 11:30 to 3. Fish weren't biting and the wind/blowing snow made things tough.

To be continued...

Spent the weekend up there, terrible fishing.  We had 10 guys fishing 5 lines each with a few jigging rods going on top of that.  Fished Fri straight out from Fowler Rd access point, Sat across the lake just northwest of the island, and Sun off the point and in the little bay area north of Fowler Rd access.  I think the collective total from the weekend was 2 togue, 6 perch and a pickerel.  I spudded out from the beach on Skylark Rd, ice was about 4-5" right off shore, but pretty quickly dropped to 3" or less.  We didn't get down south from there, but the local reports were speaking of open water from the Narrows southward.

Another note, the Sunoco station on rt 9 on the north end of town has a sign out for live bait, but didn't have any in stock yet, he said he was getting stuff in this Thursday.

Yep. That was me! I wasn't cold, but the snow filling holes was frustrating. Got a pole ordered for the hub. Be back out next week. Weather looks good for ice making. Snow will probably be blown off. Water temps on the south side should drop with this cold wind. And nice steady clear cold nights and days=ice ice baby  ;D

I think the tournament every year has really impacted Schroon Lake over the years.  Tournaments are fun but honestly they are the worst thing that can happen to a lake, especially small lakes.  So many fish are killed over a 3 day tournament it is unreal.

Out there fishing with a bunch of I.S. guys,  had great time, number of 20" cookie cutter Lakers, perch, no salmon.  8-12" ice everywhere we drilled.  Let me tell you something else, RPudney can cook the venison boys!!!
