I had the dog swimming on the south end today.  It was beautiful, but it's going to take a bit for it to cool down enough to get some ice.  I'm hoping for mid January.

I almost put the canoe in and would have taken some spoons and rapalas out to the weed bed.

Friend of mine caught a nice Lake Trout north end Friday, 2 1/2 inches ice, then we had the weekend rain.  From the boat launch north stayed frozen, south of that opened back up.  Low single #'s temp last night, if we don't get much snow  north end should be ok for the weekend.

Fished Lincoln pond. Nothing but dinkers today. Felt good to get out there though. Definitely had to workout the first of the season bugs. 5-6" dam side

I'll be out on Schroon poking holes sun/mon/tues. New lake to me but I'm set on icing my first laker this year. It's gonna happen!

How do you plan setting up?  Tip ups on the bottom or just under the ice...  I've heard it both ways.  I've never taken a laker on hardwater...

I'll vary them. All live bait. I'll be focusing on jigging though. Learning the lake, I want to be mobile. Won't setup the tipups till I catch one jigging

Be careful on just how mobile you plan to be.  This lake just froze, and not evenly, I might add.  North end is the only spot that has any ice, a that is where the Schroon River comes in, so lots of current.  150fow is not where you want to get wet, just sayin'.

Noted. Be a few more days before I get out. Weather looks good for ice. Minus snow

My thinking is with the cold forecasted and now it looks like we will miss that storm this weekend, we should be looking at 6" ice by end of the weekend, that is from the boat launch behind Stewarts north.  If you stand on the boat launch and look towards the Island there is open water in the center of the lake southward, as of this afternoon.

Once you get one jigging, you'll be hooked! Much fun and very addicting!

^ X2 What that dude said!
I like using tipups, but rarely for lake trout. If you get one jigging. Spare yourself fooling around with tipups at all.
You'll be wasting your time when you could be catching.
