Fished the narrows this past Sunday and walking was fine. I'd say 15"+ of ice. Fishing was really slow. Things looked dead on my flasher. Ended up catching a splake on a sucker. Was fishing 65-79 FOW. Not a soul out there was strange.

Phil it's been like that all season, ghost town out there.  Maybe the break will do it some good.  Interesting to see how many show up for the derby in a couple weeks.

With LG frozen it makes sense.  Never caught a splake before.  Didn't know Schroon had them.

Splake is weird.  I've heard of the occasional brown trout or brookie.

I'll be up there for the derby along with a few others. How much snow is on the lake?

I will be there. Drove by today on my way home from plattsburgh, saw someone driving what looked like a trail blazer on the ice at the northern end.

I haven't seen any slush on the southern end.  It must be up north.

There are large areas off town boat launch and Fowler, and Adirondack, that are packed down, good for anything, trucks, quads, snowmobiles, easy dragging.  Once you get off the packed areas, the snow is deep with many drifts, very hard going for anything but snowmobiles.

Those are fairly unimpressive fish.  Maybe I should have gone for pickerel instead of trout yesterday.

When we had our licenses and bait receipts checked yesterday the Encon officer said hardly anybody had caught anything.  He pointed out 1 group of trucks and said they caught 4 lakers.  We were watching the other groups and only saw one run to a flag.

I know we spent 12 hours out there yesterday and had no real luck.  8 times I had a minnow mouthed and pulled, but nothing was on the line.  Our group had probably 30 tip ups out.  I kept moving mine further and further out from the channel and flat we were fishing.  One guy caught a perch.

I hope somebody out there was having good luck.

 FINAL 4 PM Sunday

Pike
10.39 lbs / 35" Billy Taylor
8.49 lbs / 33" Scott Brean
7.86 lbs 31 1/2" Augustine Fucci

Lake Trout
6.87 lbs / 27 1/2" Doug Hopping
6.61 lbs / 27" Dale Pecor
5.93 lbs / 26" Kevin Hart

Salmon
4.40 lbs / 21 1/2" Dave Disanto
1.98 lbs / 17" Bob Rea

Pickerel
4.25 lbs / 25 1/2" Justin Boyer

Perch
1.6 lbs / 14 1/2" Steve George

Most years the winning Lake Trout is 11-13lbs, Pike 18-20lbs.   Down cycle for this lake, IMO

Very disappointing weekend for me. Saturday - 5 guys - 25 tip ups plus 3 of us jigging. I managed 5 lakers. Biggest being a wopping 21ish maybe 22". Caught 2 on tip ups and 3 on the jig rod. Other 4 in the group....0. A few hookups, but nothing landed.  Today I decided to go try a spot I caught a few pike over the summer. No signs of life. Picked up about 9 and moved to the narrows. Fished there the rest of the day. Caught 1 dink perch, 1 3.5lb small mouth and a 11" baby laker. Never fished the narrows before. Headed south after fishing the 20' flat and channel. According to the Navionics app I was heading to and 80 fow area...cut hole 24 fow???? Quite the discrepancy.  Overall wish I would've just went to LG

Spent some time at The Baitshop in Schroon this weekend.  Most reports were poor.  One young lad was pretty happy though.  He came in with his dad, never iced fished before.  Joey, the owner,  set him up with a couple rigged tipups, and auger, and some bait, along with some instructions on where to go.  Ends up catching a 19" laker, his first, which they had for dinner.  Guess there are more important things than winning a derby.

What does it take to catch a smelt out there? We tried just about everything. Hard to compete with them when the whole screen is just a huge bait ball.

Usually we get them on Hali's with a grub.  Change up colors.  Sometimes they don't want any movement of the jig, then I just set the rod on a pail and watch for the slightest movement of the tip, then lift.

Bump! Look alive guys. Another month and maybe, justtt maybe, we can be on the ice! Drove around today. Small ponds had about 1" of ice, surprisingly. A couple patches of skim on lincoln. Nothing on Schroon or paradox.
How accurate is navionics on schroon?

I had a similar experience as to MJB last ice season when I fished it for the first time. I have since trolled this lake quite a bit this summer and have the navionics on my phone and a chip for my lowrance. I wouldn't say it's useless but there are a lot of contours which Didn't show up on either, A LOT.  in general it gave me a good starting point but I almost lost my rigger balls more than once. I'll be back out there once we get good ice, I'd like to try to fish some of these humps and flats. Only did the hard water a few times last season as I spent more time on George.

Thanks for the scout report. Hoping for some ice making weather!
