Ice and Black Lab Puppy
« on: Nov 15, 2018, 08:22 AM »
Took my 5 month old Black Lab out this morning and the puddles in my dirt driveway were frozen. My pup tried his hardest to get the leafs that were under the ice. First ice he has seen and it was funny to watch. Should be a riot watching him tonight with our first snowfall of the year.
I plan to live forever. So far so good!

Dieseldog,

Where are you located? Also getting our first snow here which is why I am curious.

Also - congrats to you on your new puppy. Any pictures?

Wow, I am lost on posting pictures on this site. Maybe when I post it will show my 5 month old boy Tater. I am in Hampden, MA, right on the CT border. Hopefully he will be coming with me on some of my ice fishing trips this year.

I would wait another year before bringing the pup out. Its a joy having the dog out with you for sure. You should know how well he swims cause they like to explore on the ice, just incase he test a weak spot.

That is a very good point. I have had him to the water a bunch of times but he still has not been over his head and had to swim. My last Lab, Diesel, would jump out of my duck boat to retrieve ducks and plunge thru newly formed ice and swim after them. But you are right, he should have a summer of swimming under his belt and much more discipline training.

I would be more worried about his soft paws to be honest. Yes he should know how to swim but that ice would have to be under 1" for him to go through. Be smart with ice choices and put some boots on his paws to avoid direct frostbite damage. Those paws are not worked in yet. Take him out when you feel as if your kids or someones kids would be safe as well.

Not just the paws but labs have a tendency of breaking nails on the ice.  That can be a mess to deal with.

My Black Lab Diesel passed away 5 years ago and with him went my desire to hunt or should I say kill. After an actual 50 years of hunting everything New England has to offer, I totally lost the drive to kill. This pup, Tater, will not hunt but he sure loves his frequent walks in the woods and fields. Never thought I would see the day that I wasn’t driven to hunt. Fishing, still driven.

Same here- lost the ability to shoot something when my son was born.   It was a light switch

Totally sucks when dogs are not with you anymore. They give you everything they have. On my 2nd Golden now. Day doesn’t go by that I don’t miss my other.

Finn before duck season.

Nice pic, nice dog. Of all the hobbies that I have had in a full life time of living, duck hunting with my Lab Diesel was by far my favorite. Putting the decoys out in the dark and then sitting in the blind next to my buddy watching first light approach was the best. Enjoy.

Awesome!!

At one point we had three britts in our house, but now we're down to just one. Piper is 10 now and loves to hunt upland birds, but with the terrible weather this fall we didn't get out much. She loves coming ice fishing with us and napping in the shack by the wood stove.
The more I fish, the less I know about fishing...
Send me a PM if you'd like info about how I built my ice shack

After 38 years with mine I’d say you are right but the dog is always willing to please you
