On the topic of lures, has anyone tried slab grabbers before? I read a bit about them and saw a video by John Wyte on youtube showcasing it.

I’ve used the slab grabbers quite a bit. The perch really seem to be interested in them but because of the shape of the hook, I find I lose a lot of fish with this lure.

I haven’t been out since before the cold snap but someone posted on Facebook that they measured 33 inches on the south end.

Pretty decent bite this afternoon. The jumbos were at times quite aggressive. Two red marks which proved to be 10  - 11inch perch charged the lure through all the smaller marks clustered around. One came boiling up off the bottom, the other from above - a good ten feet. Both hit like trains. The other big ones were typical subtle slurpers. In between the big ones there were plenty of second stringers to keep things interesting.
While I didn't bother with a tent and camera, I got the feeling that the pike took the day off. Only a few times did the big pouty red mark clear out the perch.

I will concur that an extension is a good idea. A fresh blade on the Jiffy made drilling a breeze.

I fished the South end for the first time in 5 weeks.  Tried 4 different spots and lot's of action in every spot.  Small perch all over the place.  Was able to keep 6 keepers for a fresh meal.  In talking to a few people that have been fishing the South end regularly, the jumbos are rare this winter.  It seems the North end is producing more jumbos on a regular basis, along with lot's of small ones.

Both boat launches are still fine for accessing the lake.  The strong wind did little drifting in of the launches.  The North launch is in better shape then the South one.

Hey y'all - pretty new here. This is my first year ice fishing and I freaking love it.

I plan on going tomorrow but it's gonna get up to 44km/hr winds. I've got a pop up shack. Is it gonna be safe, or should I stay home?

Hamsteak, I fished outside and hole hopped yesterday in the strong wind.  It wasn't cold.  As long as you have a good outfit to break the wind, you will be ok.  If you wait for a calm day on the Strap, you won't be fishing much.

Get out there, the fish are biting good.

Was out at Blackstrap in the north end  on Sat in 22’ feet of water and caught my limit of jumbos.  I found the jumbos were mostly aggressive between 11am-1pm and then they slowed down but the smaller guys were biting all day.  I fished outside and braved the winds.

I was out at the North end today, and tried 3 spots.  Pretty steady action in all 3 spots from 10 to 4:30.  Best time was probably 11 to 2, then picked up again at 3;30.  Was able to get 10 jumbos.  Again, there seems to be perch all over the place, with a 70% to 30% mixture of small ones (70%) to big ones (30%).  The future 2 to 4 years is looking real good once all the little ones grow up.

Tons of action at Evan’s and boat launch. Non stop action and a lot of jumbos. Great day.
Threw on the perch talker for the last half hour and hammered 6 jumbos. All went back today.
Haven’t used that hook much but the perch sure seemed interested in it today.

perch, perch, and more perch pretty well being caught steady all year. now with the warm temps in the forecast for march should be a great time again to get the kids out for some of the action.

kinda weird not hearing of any big pike being caught this winter. usually every year you here of some. is it because of all the small perch forage in the lake.?

I've seen plenty of big mid 30s pike menacing around but cant seem to get them up. Must be an abundance of food thing. That's a good sign for the health of the lake at least right?

Was out last Sunday - perch, perch, perch! No jumbos though, just little guys. Finding a little VMC Tungsten jig tipped with a pink maggot drives em crazy. Got myself a nice Strikemaster 24v auger and boy I tell you, it's a dream upgrading from a manual auger to that.

Also, looking to head out this weekend again. Do you guys think I'm safe to drive on the ice, or would I be better off hoofin' it?

Thanks guys, hope you're all well.

Wondering as well, someonje mentioned he saw wa water on the south end. Is it still good to get on the south boat launch? The one down that big hill?

Was out all day with Son, Wife and Granddaughter. No problems accessing the lake at the boat launch. There was a bit of standing water by the launch at day's end, but no concerns coming off. Trucks were still driving all over.

As for the bite, it was on and off, with fish on the camera for most of the day. When they stopped biting, the perch were pretty hard to entice. While we had no fish over 10 inches, Granddaughter caught 15, outfishing her dad by an honest dozen. That, plus fresh bannock made on the ice made for a pretty good day.

First time at the strap this year. Took my three year old daughter out and I couldn’t bait our hooks fast enough.

The perch bite was not light. 2 jumbos out of about 50 in an hour and a half. Everything went back.

Probably be my final trip to North end as far as driving on goes, south end boat launches should be in better shape than north end access .
