And suckers. Went to Jism lake of slayer fame. Didn't trust the dam ice - didn't bring spud. I saw folks had walked it on my way out...next time. Walked all the way to the sandbar - one brown in a couple hours of searching from 10-18 feet deep.

Went back to isla. Found a school immediately - suckers. I got 10 suckers and 2 perch before lunch.

Then the perch finally came in in schools. Probably ended with 25 perch and 25 suckers. The big suckers were fun on the palm rods. Here is my limit of 8-9 inchers. Palm rods are 10 and 11 inches.

Had to leave with the screen full of perch. At 2:30 pm.

Good luck guys.

Good job.

Nice work, Shoe!! I knew it would pick up at some point. ;D How was the ice holding up?

Nice perchy kind of day. Personally I've never experienced nor spoken to anyone who has actually eaten a sucker, especially one well prepared for tacos, fried to a crispy goodness and served with all the fixins including maybe even some blew cheese. I've met carp eaters and gar eaters but don't believe I know any sucker eaters.
-
Ice was 12" at the sandbar, 8" at island. The guys fishing the front end said 6" there. No deterioration today. I think I would stick with eating Lake Fork crappies over sucker meat. And the blue cats from there are good eating, too. I know some macks that like em. Filleting these was a chore that I will have to finish in the am.

Which end do you light?

Palming it on Jism lake!! Sounds like fun. I brought a couple palm rods when we went up earlier this winter but didn't use them much. :( I bet the suckers were fun. I've caught some healthy Rainbows at Atown with them.
I've eaten smoked suckers up in nortern Minesnowta. Them greasy buggers aren't too bad smoked .

I knew ya had in it ya! ;D Pretty sure I know where I'm going saturday!

Thanks for the report Shoe.

Regarding palm rod - bites were very light - it REALLY helps to hook them. I caught a few on my conventional rod, dead stick with venom float. But, missed a lot dead-stickin since it was a few feet away. We are having perch stew tomorrow night - Chad LaChance recipe, onions, tomatoes, garlic, white wine, broth, perch. Finally got those little buggers filleted. Waxies, 14-15' of water. Slayer, my son's got a hockey game Saturday afternoon...maybe I can come up for the morning - have to see. But, it didn't kick on until later.

Nice job on the School, haven't seen a screen like that in years.

The tail lights up better than the head to get it started. ;D
There's actually a lot of meat on suckers and if you smoke them you can easily pull the bones out. When I was studying fisheries science in college we used to take the electroshocker to nearby river when they were running and stock up. Lots of good eating in the dorm before they were finished off.

Sweet, way to go Shoe!
I can't believe how many suckers are in there this year, maybe they should throw a few Pike in ;)
-
Shoe,
What type of line and lb. test do you use on palm rods? Bought one but never used it. Seems a perfect rod for the hike to the Jizm.

Do they work? I guess- :P
Do they look ghey? For Sure! ;D
-
I put 3 lb test mono on them. Some of those suckers weighed 3 lbs and got near the breaking point while hand lining.
Do they look ghey? For Sure! ;D
Ha. The "John Deere" colored floating suit that I wear is even more embarrassing. ;D Keep your distance, all this gheyness will rub off on ya. :o
Once the big school of perch moved it, honestly ocean bait casting gear would work. Palm rod is for those picky ones.

I don't normally hot-spot but this lake really needs some thinning out. Several of us are going up there tomorrow. just catch and keep a butt-load is all I ask! ;D

Kill, Kill, Kill!! ;D
I'm going to a more "challenging lake" LOL

I agree. Surprisingly, it doesn't get enough pressure. Keep every sucker, too. ;D No limit there. It would have been 25+ pounds of sucker to carry out for me.
