Could someone put a pic of the rubber band trick? I looked it up on here and and a little confused on how to do it.
-
Reel out line to desired depth you wish to fish, if you wish place a line marker. Reel out another 10+ feet of line, depending on how far you want the fish to run before hook set. It may vary from species to species, Use your judgement.
Lay your line on top of a small rubber band like this.
(http://i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac183/alexdlarge1/P1590084_zps10c5e2de.jpg) (http://s898.photobucket.com/user/alexdlarge1/media/P1590084_zps10c5e2de.jpg.html)
Grasp the rubber band on either side of the line and pass one loop through the other like this.
(http://i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac183/alexdlarge1/P1590085_zps4e98e521.jpg) (http://s898.photobucket.com/user/alexdlarge1/media/P1590085_zps4e98e521.jpg.html)
Pull the working loop tight so that it creates a hitch around your line like this.
(http://i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac183/alexdlarge1/P1590087_zps79816251.jpg) (http://s898.photobucket.com/user/alexdlarge1/media/P1590087_zps79816251.jpg.html)

Place the loop around your reel and then reel in the 10+ feet of line that you wish the fish to run with.

It sounds difficult but once you do it, it will click and you will say AAAHHHHH!
Some people like the rubber band to break on big fish. I've never had one of these bands break but if I wanted to I could use a thinner band or take one of these and snip it lightly with nail clippers to create a weak point in the band.
Hope this helps.
-
Damm Alex there's 3 yards and a cloud of dust and then theres you going for the whole 9 yards. Nothing tops Alexs photo description but you can use a weaker rubberband for weaker bait.
-
This is cool . Thank You for putting it up . I will be trying this year .
-
Interesting, I'll try this out.
-
what type of line are you running on that tip up?
-
That is really cool. :)
-
I have never used a tip up but if I ever do I will use this. Great explanation and pictures. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks!
-
Very nice ......this method/technique is used for was species/situations ?
-

That line is probably 20 years old so I'm not certain about the manufacturer. I believe it is 30lb braided ???
-
thats the tip i needed for rigging giant baits so they cant trip the flag...ill just loop the rubber band as shown, and not wind any line over it...
-

I used this often when I didn't have a snosled, traps spread out over 100 yards it takes a while to get to them. This way the fish don't spool you by the time you get there. I use it on salmon, trout, but it works great on lake trout or any other species that likes to take the bait and run and spool your line. I don't always use this method.
-
that's cool thanks
-
Thanks! That's a very interesting thing to know.
-
Interesting! I'm going to try that on my rattle wheels!!!
-
thanks Alex
-
The way most guys use it , is with the intent to break, that way, there is a small stop in the run, without pulling the bait from the fish, or having him drop it. We tie it in about 10 yds, with a circle hook, the secret is to have the right tension ( thickness) of rb so that it does break. I have used it with success, and have had it fail, where it is spooled to the rb, and the bait is dropped
-
Excellent job with explanation and photos Alex!
-
Although I've never heard of that, it does make perfect sense and can be adapted for many different uses.
Fishermen are resourceful people, able to fix and create things with "McGuiver" like speed!
-
that's cool for sure. Good info
-
I'm glad I could help clear things up. I obviously didn't "invent" this trick but I like to take pictures and fish so I thought I would post and help contribute to the ice fishing community. This trick can most certainly be used with most kinds of traps like jack traps, polar tip ups, etc...
-
nice post and great pics good job.....
-
thanks for the post...great tip!!
-
Excellent posting for this technique. I have used this also for years the larger the targeted species the more success I have had with it.
-
I need to give this a try thanks
-

Wow, it looks brand new...
-
I have always wanted to try this but usually end up using one specific tip-up and just bend the flag just enough to keep tension. But I will try this instead.. Thank you!!
-
I guess I am kinda dense, but what does the rubber band do? Once the fish runs a little ways your flag still pops up and when the fish reaches the rubber band doesn't it just pop?
-
Just watch, someone will make special rubber bands for tip ups and charge a buck a buck a piece for them, tell how much better they are than a regular rubber band.
Then we will argue on which rubber band works best. Hey it is a good idea. You guys just keep on thinking.

The "Buddah" band is an ingenious tip that really has its place and time. If I'm togue fishing in semi - deep - deep water, especially if it's cold and nasty, you can bet I've got some bands in use for the day. Nobody can say they enjoy getting spooled by a togue (certainly doesn't have to be a big one to do so) in those conditions and then have to deal with it. I think its fairly important to match your band roughly to the strength of your leaders, for instance the smallest band you can buy at Staples tunes well with 6 or 8 pound flouro leader. Pretty cool when you pull up to a trap and see it bungy jumping on the other end. ;D Another advantage is when you see a broken band you know you have a "good one" on. @) Try it, you might like it. @)

Do you think this method/technique helps "set the hook" ? Thinkn bout trying it on my Crappie and Perch tip ups....of course with a much lighter rubber band .Any thoughts ?
-
It will set the hook when the fish runs with the line you give them and once they reach the rubber band the will stretch which will set the hook into the fish. I am going to try it tonite on perch will let you know tomorrow morning.
-
Make sure the spool is strongly attached to the wood upright or it may get pulled off.
-
Tha'ts a pretty neat little trick. Could that be considered snagging in some states?
-
A Wyoming member and IS Moderator shared this technique with me a number of years ago for rainbows on tip-ups. I haven't really used tip-ups for quite some time but, go with a good quality circle hook and all you have to do is find'em and pull'em in! Outstanding pic description Alex Delarge!

X2!

This trick has its place in the fishing arsenal. Had really good success last winter when targeting pike. I only used it in conjunction with large circle hooks for pike or smaller wide gap octopus hooks for walleye.
Any quick strike rigs or anything with a treble hook or large jig I left the rubber band off. The fish seamed to just drop the bait when it reached the band cause the lure was to bulky and would not be pulled into the corner of the mouth.
-
Thx for posting!! Deff gonna try that out
-
Looks interesting, might have to try it out.
-
Great post, def. going to try it, Thx AD
-
Could have used this yesterday when it took me too long to get to a Brookie on a tip-up. Had to cut the line to release her she had it so long. Nice post.

For my tip-ups I have a button on them, through 2 holes, slide that up and down to mark depth. Has always worked well for me, even with cold fingers.

Might be a good idea to go back and re-read the beginning of the thread, daveyg17k.
It is not intended to mark depth. ;)2

That's awesome never heard of this.... I'm going to try this.....
-
I use it for Lakers or other fish when they're doing a lot of hit n dropping.works but I'll find 21 inch Lakers bouncing around
-
Great post gonna have to give that a try!
-
I will be giving this trick a try this year for sure.
-
Nice job, thank you. I am brand new to ice fishing this year and have spent countless hours going through the WWW looking for tips.
This is up there with the best of them.
-
cool
-
I use rubber bands that my son gets for his JI Paper route, they work AWESOME!!!
I have tried others with varying degrees of success.
Not too strong, not too weak. Not worried about the spooling but with circle hooks I use, it helps set them extremely well.
-
Legal in MN or not?
-
great idea, thanks for the post, will put this on my to try list, neat
-
I have to try it.I had never seen that trick before.great descriptions and the pics.

Great photos and explanation, thank you!
-
Good idea!!! ;D
-
Nice! I'll have to give it try.

It works, switched my rigs last time out and had way less missed flags......the only fish that hit the band were large ones though.....
