Just started doing this ice fishing thing and would appreciate some help on finding a portable and comfortable chair or seat to use while in the shelter.I have seen the seats that go into the buckets but would prefer a seat with a back. Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

my portable has a carpeted bench that works fine for me. You should try the keeper deluxe chair from cabelas. I think they are around $60. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166&id=0029917112189a&navCount=1&podId=0029917&parentId=cat601250&navAction=push&catalogCode=QS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601250&hasJS=true (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166&id=0029917112189a&navCount=1&podId=0029917&parentId=cat601250&navAction=push&catalogCode=QS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601250&hasJS=true)

Hi,
I have the cushioned seat that fits on top of the 5-gal bucket. It is nice because you need to take the bucket with you anyway, saves a little weight and space by combining (multitasking) your regular shanty equipment.

I used to have a picture of a homemade wooden seat that fit into a 5 gallon bucket. The bottom was cut to fit snuggly into the bucket. It had a back and was hinged. Made out of 2x4's. Wouldn't be hard to make but would add some weight to your total. If you have a 4x4 or SM then not to worry. Good luck to your search.

used to use a pail... but then my back started hurting... moved to a folding camp chair, but that took up too much room in the sled... finally settled on a small hunting chair.. has a back rest and folds up nice in the sled...

Bucket.

right now i use a little folding camp seat but i was at the local gander mountain the other day and saw that HT has a little foam bucket seat that fits over the hole in a 5 gallon bucket and it has a small cut out so that you can put your fish in the bucket while you are still sitting on it. that looks like the way to go

If you have the room the folding camp chairs with the cup holders work wonders, No aching back afterwards and nice and comfortable while fishing. If you dont have the room then the little folding hunting seats with the backs are all right.

I am using an old kitchen chair with well-padded back and seat(very comfortable)....on rollers , no less .For company I have a couple of folding camp chairs .
-
Folding seats from a mini van I bought the seats at the junk yard for 10 bucks, just put them on milk crates. That is when we aren't running for flags.
-
Never thought of the 18packs... great idea!!

Wissota Bear...Is that a mod that you made for under the seat(looks like a drawer)?

Was wondering the same thing !!!!!!!!!!!!

No drawers guys. Those are inserts Otter used to make for mounting swivel seats to. I cut some holes in the back of them for mounting my 20lb tank and a deep bucket for holding my minnow bucket and Vexilar. Still trying to figure out where to mount an extra Vexilar battery for LED lights. I want it high in the sled, encase the lake ice sinks from snow weight.

pail if im just outside. the shack im building right now is getting a couple car seats, either a single bench seat or two bucket seats, gotta decide what im gonna put in it. in my current shack its just a wooden bench but i didnt like how uncomfy it got after a few hours so in my new one im making sure i can stay in it all day.

Now that is my idea of a nice homemade ice fishing box! What's the inside look like? I think you nailed it for the perfect size!

I alternate from a bucket to a tri-pod folding chair that came with my HT Shelter. I still bring the bucket either way to put all the fish I catch in. I thought about cutting a hole in the side to toss my fish through, but don't want to weaken the bucket to where I can't sit on it. The lid is too hard to keep taking off and on to throw the fish inside.

I've noticed that about the 5 gallon buckets, too. I thought about cutting off some of the 'fingers' that you have to pry out to open them, but then I found saw the lids on driveway-salt buckets. They only have four of the fingers, and they only cover about of quarter of the edges altogether. They're much easier to open, and I'd bet your driveway or walkway has been icy at one point in time, so you might as well buy the bucket of salt anyway. Put the other lid on the salt so it seals better though... hehehe

If its warm enough out that I dont have to sit in the shack I use folding lawn chairs, but if its inside the shack I just use milk crates or 5 gallon pails.

I found four folding chairs at a garage sale ....25 cents each
found canvas at another sale 1.00 dollar
i sewed canvas double with left over stuffing from garage sale pillows 2 @ 25 CENTS
I used a staple gun to secure canvas to the wooden folding chairs
the boys and i have been using them for fishing for 7 years now.
