I think all that snow is making it look like "Ice In" and then that snow will freeze into bad ice. I wonder if they do it as a publicity stunt in hopes to attract more people to start booking places to stay for their ice fishing weekend and sell more derby tickets.
I always thought ice in and out didn't actually have to do with the lake locking with ice, I thought it had to do with the Mt. Washington not being able to dock at all its ports. but maybe the tour guy on the Mt. Washington didn't have a clue when he said that lol
They declared ice in Jan 14th last year and that was an amazing season I highly doubt it to be 6 days later this year. Just because it holds snow doesn’t mean it’ll hold you. This is such a bad declaration because it is going to give people a false confidence.. well the weekend warrriors and out of staters at least. They better have rescue on stand by after posting something like this.
The official ice in is called when all five of the mounts ports are frozen in. so in reality the broads can be open water but still declared ice in. Be very cautious out there i read that a new hampshire man died sunday when his snowmobile went through moosehead lake in maine which has been frozen for a little while. Use your head people its your own life go check the ice first hand stop listening to others. It would be tragic if someone fell through because someone said it was safe but the end of the day that person that gave you the info is still fishing and going home to their family. Sorry i know we been talking about this to exhaustion but i feel its not getting through to people.
This guy went through at a spot that is known to never safely freeze. It is a shame but not uncommon. Use your heads people! My heart goes out to his wife that was out riding with him that day. No one should assume anything, let's get home safe guys!
a little over 20 years ago, I attended and participated in a Ice safety and self rescue class in Maine, the one theme that was repeated time after time during the coarse was there is no such thing as safe ice...Ice is a fickle medium, it can be extremely strong, it can be deceivingly weak, many factors go into the compositions and degradation of it... most savvy ice fisherman know moving water attracts fish, most ,not all understand to use caution near it, natural springs can keep ice thin in areas even when the ice is being measured in feet and not inches.. local knowledge or years of experience can be the difference between a successful day outdoor and a tragic one.The lake I spend the majority of my time on, has 2 notorious bad spots that NEVER freeze safely, I warn anyone I talk to on the lake not to pass these spots, no matter how safe it looks, they are NEVER safe... last year I watched a caravan of 4 wheelers during the derby almost drive right into open water, even when the ice I was fishing on was over 2' thick...had the wind not been wiping white caps that morning it might have ended differently..all we have to do is go back the derby weekend 2 years ago, to see the result of a bad day on Winni.Lets all show a little compassion towards each other and advise those ( as most of us have been) of the dangers of walking on unfamiliar ice.. Be safe everyone Roc
Well said Joe
X2, very well said!
News down here in Massachusetts spreading the news of "ice in" on Winnipesaukee. They show old footage of trucks driving on the ice, snowmobiles, loading ice houses.Hate to say it, but here we go.Not long before the first report of someone "testing the ice" with a late model SUV. .......3.......2...... ..1......
has any one been by levitt park yet... I know I have to check the ice myself . but its a hour and a half from my house . I don't want to drive up there for a inch of ice.. thanks and stay safe this season
