Not as uncommon as you might think. I've seen many baby ducks disappear in one swirl. Watched an adult mallard go down several years ago. That was a battle. Down and back up twice. The last time it's neck was clearly mangled. Third time it didn't come back up...

Video was cool. Those things happen so quickly it's hard to catch any of it before it's over.

I seen a nest of mice try to swim out into a lake when they were un-covered near the shore.  They did not last long, pike made a meal of them.

taxi1 thank you for posting the video link. Never know what you will see when outdoors I once saw two crows harassing a red tailed hawk possibly trying to chase the hawk away from their nest. One of the crows got to close and fell victim to the hawk's talons.

I watched some baby ducks disappear in swirls one day years ago.  No pike or muskies in the lake.  Still trying to figure out if it was a cutthroat or a brown that had got big enough.

How about bass? LM bass will also eat ducklings. Catfish maybe?  Then again, with the size that trout can get in lakes it wouldn’t surprise me either lol.

If no bass or pike in the water. I definitely vote brown. Big ol' browns love a big meal off the topwater. Go out at night and toss some huge mouse patterns and you will catch the biggest browns you've ever seen.
