Title: Ice Report NW WI
Post by: scandman on Dec 31, 2017, 08:45 AM
We have around 12-13" of ice, people are beginning to drive full sized trucks.  One week below zero should help things currently -20 this morning.

What county are you in?   I have been out the last two days in Washburn and Douglas and only finding 7 to 10 inches.

A pickup fell through Spooner Lake yesterday. Be careful trying to drive out ice is uneven and that little bit of snow we had insulated the hell out of it. https://drydenwire.com/news/pickup-falls-through-ice-on-spooner-lake/

I was out on the pike chain(bayfield County) today. Somebody had a permanent shack they moved with their truck on the ice. Where we drilled holes and set up there was maybe 8 or 9 inches. Keeping in mind that’s not all clear ice. There’s white ice in there from all the snow etc. Fine for atv or snowmobile but you wouldn’t find me out there in a full size truck. Anyway it’s solid. They made it off fine. I’ve just always heard that with white ice, you need double. We only got out for a few hours in the afternoon. Didn’t catch a thing.

I drove out my F150 pickup for the first time this winter yesterday on a 900 acre lake in Sawyer Co. had 17" of good hard ice. After all this extreme cold I'm surprised the ice isn't even thicker. There was maybe 3" of hard snow on top, most of the snow has been blown off. It sure is nice when you can drive out.

Anyone been on Lake Superior Ashland area? I've been told trucks are out there but I'm worried about this warm weekend. I have a small Tacoma curb weight 3,800lbs

My friend was out off of Ashland last Sunday drove out full size gmc pickup, but unfortunately he got stuck in the deep snow, had to get pulled out by another truck. I never like the idea of driving truck out on the big lake. Cracks open up, ice heaves etc.

You should be golden around Minong, I’d bet close to 20” ice.
