Yeah that ice is toast...

Its interesting to say the least, how it all works..

That one day there was two feet of that stuff, you could grind your boot heal all the way to water if you wanted to.. You could kick at it and get long pencil shaped pieces out of it..

That's what the ice around here looks like now. We don't typically see it here, we usually get just the top layer to honeycomb and then it turns white... but this year was some crazy weather and areas of 10-12" of ice are honeycombed all the way through. I'm seeing guys talk about "hard clear ice" when sitting on refrozen honeycomb, I'm just hoping they realize what honeycomb ice is before it's too late. Seeing lots of reports of "plenty of ice, 5-6 inches" when it's obviously honeycombed. There's no direct reference, but I've heard of guys falling through 10" of honeycomb on foot.

That's what's called rotted ice.
It breaks apart vertically and if you stepped on a section you'd break right thru because the ice would have no horizontal strength.

It wouldn't crack, as it would on normal ice, but rather break like stepping on and breaking thru a crust layer on slush.

.      That’s why a spud does very little to check this kind of ice, I have seen in years past where it was 10” and a guy stepped off a dock and went thru up to waist, only broke around his waist, had a heck of a time getting out as it all didn’t break !!

Off a farm pond, about a acre in size. Usually first to freeze and first to thaw , normally

Doesn’t matter the thickness, you can fall through 3’ Of candled ice.... and there’s no way to pull yourself out.

Been seeing fellas posting pic's on facebook of ice that looks like those in the pictures and telling how solid it is while they are out fishing. Waiting to hear how they went thru it. Have seen fellas go thru ice 7"-8" thick that had rotted during a couple warm days.

I've been on 27" of this stuff back in my daring days at last ice and drilling was strange to not see shavings only the pencil ice pushing up from the auger. Testing from shoreline before walking out it seemed to hold but would not take the chance again, especially on thinner ice. Rotten ice is rotten ice, be smart!

Bad thing is...Cold weather refreeze won't fix honeycombed ice. It may seem solid, but it isn't.

How can someone tell if its honey combed from a standing position. Can you see the vertical lines ?

Spudded bad ice today, it went through 4-5" like nothing.  I've never been on ice like this before, but you'll know it as soon as you drill or spud.  I posted about wearing your picks, a guy went through when there was 6" of ice, but most of it was bad.

Glad you said this.  I assumed that it would refreeze solidly.  I'll have to do some more examination.

I saw some really different drain holes, picture below, I assume on the lake here.  The ice seemed to behave a bit odd on Friday, where 10" of ice seemed to, in the sun, crack and fracture differently than normal expansion cracks.  Some 45 degree cracks, and almost like chips breaking out of the top of the ice during a crack formation.

Bad thing is...Cold weather refreeze won't fix honeycombed ice. It may seem solid, but it isn't.

It will refreeze solidly if it gets cold enough AND it will also degrade back to its original candled state very quickly if temperature allows..

Those little ice tornados are cool....saw a bunch of those a couple weeks ago when I was out and it was day 3 or so of a warming trend.  Back to cold now so hopefully tightens back up.  Definitely a time of year to be careful and have your safety gear with you.
