SD people-SkipJacks?
« on: Nov 21, 2006, 10:10 PM »
When I was younger, we always went to Pierre area fishing in the summer, and we'd catch "skipjacks" occasionally what are they?

They are Goldeyes. I think for their size, they fight as hard as anything there is.

I used to catch them when i was kid.  we called them gold eyes.  Not sure what theyre any good for but they worked allright for cutbait when fishin for cats.

Maybe they would.  The ones I used to catch were fairly large,  12-18 inches maybe.  Would be fun to catch the monster pike that wanted a peice of that action.

I caught a Goldeye in ND a couple years ago, some pretty awesome looking fish. Are they just considered roughfish by you guys, or are they good eating, or commonly targeted for sport?

We treat them as rough fish. They are really full of bones. I don't know anyone that does anything with then other than throw them back.

In manitoba I use goldeye for pike bait on tip ups and guys use them as cut bait to. People also like to smoke them and they taste pretty good apparently. If this is the same fish that is.
pour me another one, I'm finished with the other one

zamboni,

The only way to eat the nasty buggers is to pickle them. My granny used to do it years ago and they tasted better then the pickled herring that you can buy in the store.

Yep, skippy's are common on Oahe and Sakakawea.  About the only good thing they are for is they provide a bit of action on slow days.  On good days they just make you mad.  They are a rough fish, get them off the hook and back into the water so I can catch ome real fish.  As others have said, they are goldeyes.  I prefer skipjack though.  Pulling cranks you always know whn one is on, very seldom do they actually get hooked in the mouth. Usually the are hooked on the body and do the big spin when hooked LOL!!!
