Title: East Bass Lake/Gwinn
Post by: pizzi22 on Dec 27, 2012, 06:41 PM
I fished East Bass Lake yesterday with my two brother-in laws and we caught over twenty northern pike but of course they were all small... We fished them almost directly in the channel between the tip of the point and towards the east shore in 8-15 feet of water... Going to try Big Shag this weekend any suggestions on where to fish for the bigger pike on that lake? The thinnest ice was 3 inches....

Any suggestions for Johnson Lake? And if anyone needs a fishing buddy let me know.. Just retired out of the army and moved back up to Gwinn...

due to my schedule i night fish often..just learnin how...east bass can be a tough one unless you fish it often....i would say fish where you were at ...maybe big suckers for bait will keep the hammer handles off your bait...im pretty much a panfish guy...congrats on your retirement and thank you for your service friend.

I have never night fished for ice fishing that could be a good time... I wouldn't mind finding some good areas for pan fish too... Yea bass lake is a good lake but most of the fish (pike) must be stunted....

Caught more little pike today near the peninsula, guys were fishing closer to boat launch and got a few bigger pike. One was about 35 inches... When I was leaving some eye fisherman were setting up about 200 yards right from the boat launch.

off to the right of the peninsula in the middle of that cove, there is a 30' hole and holds suspended gills and a few big pike cruise through there too.
have caught walleye off to the right as well.  to the left of that peninsula, further out than you were is a 30' channel and good for perch and walleye.
Where those guys caught the 35" pike is the best place for them, that is right in the middle of the 9 f.o.w. grass flat and is where i catch most pike.
To the left of the Peninsula and way down, close to the island, my friend does well for Crappie in the summer, don't know where they hang out in the winter yet....Thank you for your Service John Pizzi!  Hooaahh!  Maybe we can hook up next time your on East bass and I can show you my fav's.  I'll be on Engman Lk. today.

Yes sounds great to me I am always up for a good day of fishing, just let me know when.. I fish engmans lake in the summer time and catch a few pike and bass. I would love to ice fish that lake too.. I am pretty much available anytime to fish so just let me know when you have time... Thanks again I will try to find that hole your talking about... So basically it's to the right of the peninsula when standing at the launch??

Id like to see 30' to the left of the peninsula....ive fished that lake many times and havent seen it. Is it close to the shore?  I do know where the hole to the right of the peninsula is ....hard to find in the winter ive drilled several holes without finding it.  Done really good in that hole fishing from a boat in the summer .  The fish in my pictures on this message were caught in east bass ....walleye fishing used to be great till they stopped planting them for the last 10 years and the water wolves (pike) took over.  When i first starting fishing that lake i could catch 3-5 keeper walleye plus a couple undersize throwbacks and rarely 1 pike per trip...now its pike after pike and occassionally one walleye these days!

I have done a ton of fishing on East Bass lake over the past couple of years. Nothing really to report for ice fishing besides hammerhandles and a 26" eye, but in the summer time I have been able to pull out a couple nice pikes, 38" and 39". And those were from each side of the peninsula.

Okay thank you both for the info. Like I said a couple of younger guys were fishing near the launch site and they caught some nice pike... When I talked to them they said they were fishing a drop off point in that weed flat area... When I was pulling out of there a couple of people set up in the exact spot for eyes for night fishing...

My lakemaster chip for my GPS puts me on the hole in the winter, lots of gills in and around there if you miss the hole.
Last year was fishing in 9 feet of water about 30 yards from shore was sight fishing watching my jig, watching a hammer handle checking out my jig, i lifted it away from him because I did not have my needle nose with me, he took off like a bat out of hell a few seconds later.  A few seconds later a giant green freight train sailed passed my hole and tiny tug on my line and it was a clean break...gone.  That was at least a 30 incher!  my panfish set up didn't stand a chance.  Now I set a tip up in the area when i'm jigging for pans.

I know for a fact that this lake has some monster pike in it. Last year I saw one break the surface right next to my boat and his back was at least 10" wide, and the year before I was trolling with a daredevil 1 ounce redeye, 50 lb test braid line with a 90lb fluorocarbon leader and one strike was all it took to snap the line. I had 5 seconds to react and a year and a half to cry, so we know they are in there.

Caught a few pike again today. Was going to night fish for a bit but of course propane ran out and for got my light... Lol biggest pike today was about 27 inches... I did meet a fellow ice shanty member today, looking forward to more fishing adventures.... I know most people don't want to give out there sweet spots or good lakes but I will definitely share all the knowledge and good spots I find during my adventures... It is nice to see other people successful as well... Keep on fishing and keep on dripping snot...

Post by: MOPARDOCTOR on Dec 30, 2012, 10:56 PM
Yeah...two years ago was trolling with a spinner bait, something slammed my spinner hard, set the hook and was reeling him in, when he got close
to the boat, he turned and dove, what I seen was about 30 inches of yellow belly at least 6 to 8 inches wide.  That was all my line could take, gone.
He ate that lure passed the 12" steel leader and snapped my 18# test like it was nothing.  I have yet to catch a pike longer than 30" and I am looking forward to surpassing my goal this winter!  I'm sure you'll see me out there very soon!

if you guys are lookin to put some bigger pike on the ice, then you have to rig up for them...tipups: i would recommend using some type of wire leader, at least 8 inches long, with either a large treble or some type of spoon, (i like pimples) with a GOOD sized sucker.  i have caught sub legal pike on suckers that were 8 inches long.  if you're jigging, then you COULD get away without the leader, but if you're targeting pike then i would just say stick with wire leaders on everything.   my family has been fishing for BIG pike as long as i can remember, and i can say that we have always used wire leaders, and it has never deterred from catching fish.  dead smelt suspended and rigged horizontally, or fished right on the bottom can work, but most days the productive setup is the live sucker.  and as mentioned: BIG BAIT BIG FISH!!  at one point we pulled a 22 inch whitefish out of a 35 inch northern... and i've seen northern hit another pike of equal size as they came to the boat.

yeah just noticed that you had a leader ::)...thats right ...sometimes theres nothing you can do like you said.   :-\    i think im gonna wander out and look for some big pike waters on little bay de noc this winter...see if i can find some 20 plus pound pigs.
Title: Re: East Bass Lake/Gwinn
Post by: pizzi22 on Jan 01, 2013, 01:52 PM
Yea I got wire leaders on everything... When I was living in Hancock I would use smelt for bait and just get swamped with 30-45 inch pike and some a bit bigger.. But here smelt are hard to come by and most of these lakes in Gwinn area are very silty and maybe even stunted lakes...  I will switch to big suckers... Thanks for all the tips

Jacks IGA in harvey has some whole frozen herring in the meat dept.  There anywhere from 6" to probably almost a foot long....looks like some really good pike bait!  They had several packs yesterday still....figured id give a heads up

Got a couple friends new to ice fishing borrowing my gear today and heading out to EB. If you see them out there (two guys, one girl, and one golden retriever) give them a hard time. Gave them a general layout on the lake but no detailed spots, just told them to stay out of the way of people on the lake who were there first. Figured they can start out the same way I did haha. Wish I didn't have to work today.

Big Arn, If you ever see a guy pullin a blue clam flip over and a red Eskimo power auger, i'm game...would love to put our heads together and punch some holes in the ice.  With my lakemaster card, we can see the structure under our feet before we drill...find some honey holes!

Went out on EB yesterday with a few friends. Had two guys with me that are pretty new to ice fishing so we set up a big group of tip ups and had flags all day. Real fun but we were hoping to get something a littler bigger. Still had a great time even though the wind and ice were brutal. We had a 9.5 inch sucker on one rig hoping to get something large and caught a 15in pike on it...

Went out this morning, bumped into a few nice fellow anglers.  Caught one small redear, put him back, caught 3 small perch, put them on the tip-ups.  Ended up with a 24" and 28 incher for the table.  Sled pulled so easy on that smooth ice.

Man this brings back some old memories.I was in the AF at KI from 75-83. Retired from there.I fished those lakes a ton but always open water. Fishinf on bass was always a blast in the spring. So many bass and bluegill. And as always the mosquito's were so bad.

Anyone curious, the ice was honeycombed the 1st 6 inches with 6 inches of solid ice under that.  BRINK CLEATS!

That ice was glass when we were out there. I took a hard fall when going out to get a tip that went off. I would also recommend cleats.

I live on KI Bee, I'm sure you have wonderful memories up here, but the place would turn your stomach now.  Where I live is one of the last nice neighborhoods on base.  Alot of it is now rundown or abandoned.  Sad.

My father retired from K.I. Sawyer back in 78 so I was also able to enjoy the lakes around the Gwinn area. After my stint in the Air force I moved to colorado for about 18 years but I came back to my roots 3 years ago and been fishing here ever since. EB is a great place to fish but another must hit lake for me is Big Shag. Both lakes have produced just shy of 40" northerns for me and a few good size eyes as well.

Got skunked on east bass today, had a couple pokes but no takers.  Mainly because I didn't feel like pulling my gear where I should have, there's 4 to 6 inches of snow on the ice and my 120# of gear felt like 200 even with the deer drag, good pooped, drilled some holes and drowned some waxies.  :-\

If you're ever on EB and see a shorter guy in full camo that drills a million holes with an Eskimo gas auger, it's me. I have fished that lake hard for several years. It isn't what it used to be just two years ago but I still ice keeper panfish, pike, and some nice perch consistently. I have iced multiple  pike around and a little over 30in, nothing huuuuge though. PM me or find me on the ice if you ever are curious about the lake!

Fished the Jig-it for the last 5 years, taking this one off.  Fishing in the boat harbor, 9 feet of water, fishing was too slow, only 1 perch caught last year with over 400 lines in the water.  Hope you have better luck.  ;D  Used to fish Sporley, then I caught both of them and don't go out there anymore. I'm really leaning towards big shag in the morning.

If you go out to the right of that peninsula out there, run a tip up with some big sucker or shiners in about 10 f.o.w....you'll see flags.   I was about 100 yards from the point, about 75 yards from that silver permanent out there.  He's a nice guy too by the way.

Caught only two pike today on Bass, had one at the 24 inch mark, half of the fish had been swallowed by a even larger fish. The pike had bite marks and jaw marks all the way around its body up to its mid back, so that means some monsters are lurking around if they are hitting 24 inch pike.

Just for additional info had a huge fish at Engmans lake on a tip up, it snapped a fourty pound braided line, no idea what it was but the line went out and I pulled my brother in- law yanked on the line and fought the fish for about the seconds and then the line snapped. About a hundred feet off the launch.

Dont be surprised if you do get one of those monsters in and it a Muskie.  Got a couple friends that live on that lake and fish it a lot.  Not 100% sure, one of them saw a huge fish under his dock he swears looked like a Muskie but it bolted before he got a better look at it.  The other has hooked into a monster a few years back that pulled jim around for a while before cutting through his steel leader.  Never got a positive ID on it but swears its was bigger than any big pike he has landed.  DNR did plant Tigers in there from '83-'91 so there could be a few left over and would be absolute beasts by now.

I have fished this lake many, many times and yes been stuck with snotrockets more than I care to count. But I have hooked into a few that have given me no chance of landing them. There is huge trophy's to be had and I will pursue them every chance I can. Just gotta be persistant. The fact of hearing about 24" northerns with bite marks half way up their their torso is not a fallacy, I have seen it multiple times. The big ones are there and even though they are elusive, they are there, be the hunter and you shall find. :)

My lady and I will be headed out to EB tomorow (2-3-2013) in the morning, going to pursue those elusive monster predators. If you get a chance and happen to be out there yourself, stop on by and say hello. It should be a blast for sure.

Quantumm, I was fishing for perch, only got two...they were extremely finnackY(?) Was still nice to get out though.  Momma already made plans for me or I'd try to meet you out there on EB.  Love running tip ups on that lake, there are definately some big uns in there! With the snow though..can't get out there far enough, my gear is too heavy to drag out to the peninsula where prefer to go.  Good luck to you!

Fully understood about being a trek if you have no means to hitch a ride somehow. Perhaps we can set up a time, and with my snowmobile, we can get you out a little further so you can enjoy the prime spots. I also have some prime locations on Johnson lake you can try, but then again, you are in the same pickle as before, the spots are a ways from the boat landing as well.

Well, I am once again giving EB another shot. On Super Bowl Sunday, my lady and I had no bites but did manage to pull up a crawdad, so not necessarily skunked. Today I've been here about an hour and had a couple good bites but in it today for the long haul. Finally got my strikemaster 1200 dp electric so punching holes will be a lot easier. UPDATE, just pulled in a couple snotrockets but nothing to brag about. If anyone comes out here today, look me up. Chillin just s/e of the peninsula, I've got beer, lol.

Hoping to have my permi out on EB this coming Saturday, which I am really excited about. Hopefully the ice will remain strong for another week or at least til the end of pike/eye season. If you see us, stop on by and so yo. @_@.

Enjoyed reading through this thread.  Read about 30 of the messages before I realized it was 2013. Lol!  How's the ice looking?

Is the parking lot at the launch plowed at all?  I want to use my snowmobile to pull all my crap out there and I need some room to park a truck and enclosed trailer.  If not plowed, can I at least turn around somewhere?  Hoping to get out there this weekend.

Was there a couple days ago, was not plowed but was hard packed enough to get a vehicle all the way around (and some room for parking).
You could put probably get your truck and trailer around the loop but it might be tight. Otherwise there should be room to back into the lot off diretcly off Seass to get turned around.

I took a ride out there today to check it out.  I didn't have my trailer but I did have my plow on the truck so I just went ahead and plowed the lot out.  It would still be a little tight going around the loop with my trailer but I think if I go the wrong way in the loop I will have lots of room to turn around and park and then go out the right way.  Hopefully soon.

Thanks for doing that! Will probably be out there tomorrow afternoon using the freshly plowed lot!

Now if it would just warm up a little bit I could get my wimpy butt out there and fish.  :)
