Colorado ice fishermen: let's get a Colorado contest going just for fun. Guess the date of the first crazy sob here in Colorado to hit the ice in the 2018-19 season, and post about it here on IceShanty. Not a sponsored contest, just for fun. Colorado boys and gals only, please.
My guess: Saturday, October 27th.

Sunday October 28th. ;D
-
October 31st. It can’t be the 27th because I’m flying back from China and the 28th is my wife’s birthday.

OH! Gotcha. We'll plan on that, then. Usual spot? ;D

Yea, or the one directly above it. I’ve had my eye on another spot south of there but I’m not as familiar with the freeze patterns.

any lake or a named lake like say Antrero?

Nate, do you mean the first guy on the ice or the first guy that comes back alive? Lostbrit, the winner will be one of those little timberline jobs around 12,500' . First fish could be a Tiger trout.. Nate, you mean drilling the first hole or catching the first fish? Or Slayer's version of the 1-3/4" pucker crawl?
November 2.

I guess the definition of first ice report would mean, walking out on the ice (pucker crawl is fine), drill (or chip) a hole, and wet a line. No fish required. ;)
-
Gotta land a fish or it don't count. Period.
-
Half of my trips I dont catch, but I know I'm on good ice lol. But yeah I'm guessing October 26th we shall see a post with a fish ;)

Ok, agreed! Fish and pics, or it didn’t happen

Exactly. I could find a frozen puddle and drill a hole in it and call it "Ice Fishing".

Nov 1st....

I’ll take October 30th. Now I just gotta let the boss know I need that day off.

Although its been early nov the last few years for me, I think we might get on earlier this year. I'm with skifisher I think the weekend of Oct 22 it's worth taking a hike...
Sat 10/6 40°/19° 0.08 IN 0 IN A couple of showers possible
Sun 10/7 45°/14° 0.03 IN 0 IN Rain and drizzle possible
Mon 10/8 37°/19° 0 IN 0 IN Mostly cloudy
Tue 10/9 39°/18° 0.05 IN 0 IN A couple of showers possible
Wed 10/10 37°/17° 0 IN 0 IN Overcast

It won’t be me risking a polar bear swim but I predict November 3 one of you diehards will pull one through the ice at high altitude.

SLAYER...
Wanna go? I’m up for it!

Like I said, Early December is when I usually ice fish. If I'm gonna freeze my butt it's gotta be for large fish or tasty perch.

I wholly admit this does not count, no fish came through a hole. But I do think its getting colder a little earlier than usual and my original prediction for next weekend might just work out. God bless my Tacoma.... no hiking required today, lets hope tonights storm doesn't mess things up

If he doesn't post on this thread with pictures then it never happened.
BTW.. I came through Lazear a few days back on the way home from Moab. You've got a pretty brutal haul from Lazear over to Blue Mesa where you ice fish.

I'm sure there were folks out last week, I didnt put in much effort and still found ice (but no fish :%$#!:) But I agree if it's not on Iceshanty it didn't happen ;).
Pleasantly surprised today, this lakes about 300ft lower than where i went last week but it was fully capped & solid in my book. One note, when your buddy says don't worry the lakes protected from the wind DO NOT BELIEVE him. Haha, yesterday was probably the perfect day to go. Road wasn't much trouble & it wasn't very cold aside from the non-stop harassment from the wind. I even included a landmark photo so you know where to go
Stay safe and heres to a long 2018-2019 season!

Nice job dntbeanenace! You win bragging rights for first official ice fishing in Colorado, 2018 — according to IceShanty.com.
October 21st, 2018.
Looks like Skifisher was closest, with his guess of October 22nd. You win bragging rights for best guess!
You both get beers and shots of whiskey if we meet up on the ice this season.
Let the Ice Season 2018-19 begin!

Those puppies are fun to catch especially on light tackle. Geared real low and with lots of heart. Maybe less tasty as table fare unless served tacoed up Slayer style con blew.
