3 man sled type ice shanty
« on: Sep 27, 2004, 09:33 AM »
I'm interested in one of these.  Any suggestions on which type to buy.  Eskimo, Clam, Otter?

Should I get new or used?  I guess Used wouldn't be a bad way to go?

I have a two man clam and I love it.  I'd go used if you can find one.

Always remember that if it says 3 man, it's prolly a two man at best. I have a "two man" suitcase style shelter, and though it has room for two fisherman, I am scrunched up and can't get a good hookset or jigging presentation in it. So I sit on the other side where so I have room when I'm alone. It works fine with just me.

I think this depends on the shelter you buy.  I have a Clam Guide and I have fished two adults and two kids in it without too much trouble.  It's only supposed to be a two man portable.  Definitely go to a place that has a selection of different types set up so you can see what you are getting.

I have a Frabill Ranger 3 man, that I only installed two of the seats in.  It gives a lot more elbow room for two larger individuals that to squeeze three in.  I haul it in the back of the pickup, or behind a snowmobile, so weight is not a problem.  Get a cover for your tent, because it is a lot simpler to keep the snow out of it while travelling that it is to take it out when you want to be fishing!!

If you order one from fish 307, make sure it is the 2004-05 model with the "D" style door and not last years model with the "U" shaped door(unless you want that).

I haven't had any problem with the "U" shaped door?
