I thought it was a crappie at first. Then saw the “stripes” and thought small hybrid Striper? White perch? So I had to ask a friend...............

Delicious eatting until the water gets to warm then they turn to mush

I caught a couple at Promised Land. They were full of worms. They went in the garden. I didn't know what they were either. Their red eyes freaked me out. Chez was there and knew what they were.

We target them here in the spring on Sodus Bay have caught some real nice once ours have much more color to them and eyes are super red they put up a good fight
-
We used to fish for them in the N Branch of the Susky around the middle to the end of May and would have a blast. Don’t know what happened but don’t catch many anymore. The red eyes were always the giveaway

Rock bass are always a fun catch, the big mouths are easier to unhook than a sunfish and they fight almost like a little smallmouth.
-
Yep! 😎

I use to keep them while ice fishing for gills and sunnies , they eat just fine
