"Fire Safety Tips For Ice Houses"
« on: Jan 30, 2006, 08:04 PM »
I know we all have most of the common sense God gave us but sometimes we all have "Brain Farts" so here are a few "Fire Safety Tips For Ice Houses" for everyone.
After all, you should treat your shanty just like your home since many of us spend so much time there.

  • Ensure there is adequate space between the wall and the heat source and place a heat shield behind the wood stove
  • Keep all combustibles away from the heat source, Flammables liquids like gas should be stored outside, don't worry gas will not freeze even @50 below, just ask any Alaskan
  • "Smoke Detectors Save Lives" so install a working smoke detector and change the battery every year at the start of the season
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near the entrance/exit and keep it accessible
  • Put some baking soda in a few small ziploc bags to throw on the fire or down the chimney if you do not have a fire extinguisher handy
  • Keep a First Aid kit handy

  • These are some very basic and inexpensive items that will keep you safe and help to prevent your precious ice house from turning into a large bon fire and losing all your equipment. :'(

You may also contact your local FD, they may have many of these items to hand out for free and may also have chimney brushes to loan for cleaning purposes, you just may not want to tell them it's for your ice house ???

Just some friendly advice from the "Fishin Fireman" 8)
