Big fat chicken?
« on: Jan 13, 2014, 04:48 PM »
I figured it out today the reason I don't ice fish as much as I would like!im a big fat chicken.I went to one of our lakes today,it is covered with ice,but only 2 1/2" with  1" of water on top. There were 3  fellows out on the ice, over 15' of water.I ask them how thick it was, they said it was a good 2 1/2".I noticed they were using the heel of their boots to make new holes........yup! I am a big fat chicken, guess that's why I don't ice fish as much as I would like!

Chicken? Nope, when in doubt don't. With that situation going on it's a disaster waiting to happen, you made a very rational call

You made the right call, not worth DYING for. They may have been kicking open "old" holes, I do that a lot, find the fish faster and less drillin'

Wouldn't catch me out there. The thinnest ice I been on was a inch thick. Then again I was walking with snowshoes on a shallow creek about a 1 foot deep in the deepest part.

wasn't sure of the ice conditions this morning. I went out to drill test holes and I was wearing arctic armor pants (floatation) and a life jacket under my outer jacket and with hand spikes at the ready! there was 5" of ice

Tis far better to be a big fat chicken than a dead duck!
Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day, give him a religion and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish... author unknown

Your no damn chicken that's for sure. I would never walk on 2 1/2 inches of ice. If anything your smarter than they are. Two inches is a little ridiculous to be walking on. I gaurantee they were nervous themselves. People fall through on 2 inches.

Sounds like a healthy case of self preservation to me.

I won't even consider going on less than 4" of ice myself, but I'm a lardass  ;D

I very much doubt they were kicking new holes with their heels.  They were maybe re-opening old holes or holes that were drilled earlier in the day.  If they were kicking new holes there is no way they would be standing on it.

2.5" is scary and I would not do it for a few fish, give me 4" of good solid ice and then I'm good to go.

I gotta agree if they were actually putting there foot through the ice  I don't see how it would hold them

Can you not open water fish all year down there? I mean, there must be flyfishing all year round down there as well as navigable rivers that never freeze. I would commit yourself to that venture a bit more than ice fishing. It's somewhat like being a snow ski addict forced to live in Florida... it's time to commit yourself to water skiing!

sometimes the chicken is too smart to cross the road.  We can hangout on the shoreline together.
