Title: 1st Time at Small Boat Harbor, Any tips?
Post by: Bfer883 on Jan 10, 2015, 06:18 AM
I think I'm gonna fish the SBH Sunday morning.  Any tips regarding equipment, rigs, parking ect... would be appreciated.

Great parking, normal equipment, normally great people. Only thing is 100 dinks for every keeper. Still fun tho.

Sounds perfect for a 1st time trip.  Any tips on where to pick up bait?

Bfer883,

You can expect to be fishing shallow <8', mostly catching lots of dink perch and gills, sandy bottom with some vegetation. At times there are decent sized perch, smelt and occasionally pike and rainbows cruise through. Not really a prime spot to fish for big fish, but you are always in the game for a giant. Knowing that there is a chance for big fish helps keep the excitement level up IMO.

You can also expect a crowd. Sometimes it feels more like the parking lot of Bills game with people tailgating as they fish. Mostly good folks looking for a way to get outdoors and have some fun, but there can be some rude slobs mixed in at times. And you can expect that some will leave a mess behind when they leave.

Bottom line if you looking for solitude you may be disappointed. If your looking to get outdoors, meet some people and catch some fish with the chance for a big one then you'll have some fun.   Good luck

Felixr captured it perfectly! Great spot to bring the kids, and test out new equipment. Not a good place if you want to catch decent fish though

Where are you coming from? I get all my bait from Captain Bob's Outdoors on Main St. in Clarence. By far the best bait I have ever gotten. Iv never had any real good luck with Big Catch. The guy at the counter always seems mad at the world and kinda rude IMO
