Moosehead Snow/Slush report??
« on: Jan 27, 2009, 11:23 AM »
Anyone have any reports on snow/slush conditions?  Headed up for the weekend and don't have any sleds, only wheelers.  Would appreciate any info.....thx.

Probably not bad today but after the storm were going to get tomorrow, ATV 4x4 is going to work hard to get to the good fishing spots.

Talked with a guy that lives there on Monday. Lots of snow on the lake. Big drifts. Told me to bring the sled. More snow coming tomorrow. About 2' of ice. Some slush in pockets.

We heard of several atvs that got bogged down and stuck last weekend.  There were a few with tracks on the atv's and they even got stuck.  Seemed they were travelling from the junction wharf out towards Hartford's Point.  We have had a few slush pockets by our place as well.  We had one out front and then one over by Black Point of Beaver Cove.

I will second the amount of snow on the ice sheet.  Saw a sled go by right down the middle of the cove and it looked like a boat hitting high waves....it was going pretty slow.

Pressure ridges.  I have heard of one up by Kineo more so towards the river so do be careful.  Maggie will know more if you are fishing up in the Rockwood area.

Otherwise, ask the people when and if you pick up bait locally.

Ice depths vary.  Here in Beaver Cove it is only about 18".  Lily Bay is thicker.  Check as you go.

Tomorrow's Forecast according to wunderground.com

snow starting at 10 am.  Expect 8-14" of snow by Thursday noon.  Winds low during the day picking up to 10-20 miles from the east and then the northeast tomorrow evening. Temps in the high teens.

Looks like snowmobiles and snowshoes should be the best modes or transportation for the weekend. Have fun everyone!

MDB do you have chains on the wheeler? Might be able to stay on tracks where the sleds have packed a trail but with all the powder that is iffy. Find slush and you will be bumming. Sorry man. An ATV has been all I had until this year. Two years ago I went to meet up with Scotty on Sabattus and ended up never making it. Got stuck so many times I got tired and said screw it. Never even made it past Mars Point.

I talked to my buddy again tonight and BCC is spot on with the reports. Big Drifts and blowing snow, slush in spots. More on the way. I'm heading out Thursday morning hopefully the roads won't suck to bad. I am so glad I finally found and bought a good sled this year.  ;D

yeah I have chains.. and good tires. As long as slush is to a minimum it will be better..  I am not getting there till Friday afternoon so hopefully there will be a good packed trail..

If I was going to be living in Maine after this spring I would probably be in the market for a used Ice fishing sled... but..  wont be needed a sled in Texas..  ::)

Im on the phone with bob right now and as on now there is no issue with slush  ;D but he said it depends on the amount of snow and how much water they let out of the dam  ???
