Minimum black ice thickness:

2" - fishing alone with hand auger
4" - fishing in a group with power auger; pushing a shack onto ice should be okay

Driving on - always risky
Parking in a group - more than risky

Was fishing by Collingwood 3" of ice. In all the test holes. Ice is beat up first 50 yards from shore but solid, then it becomes clear black ice 2 to 3 inches. Obviously ice starts to taper further you walk out. Fished 23 ft of water couple walleye and tullibee. Ice was making some star wars style noises and scared me a few times with the cracking. Be safe out there.

Glad people are getting out there safely. I would love to get out this weekend but this very warm weather coming our way this week may hold me back for a while :(. Curious as to what 7-9 degrees celsius will do to the ice.

And so it begins, 2 guys also went through on foot yesterday.

There's no rush guys, this lake claims lives. Look at the forecast and use your head.

Much too early for driving on we have not had near enough cold weather yet. Glad no one was lost to this world, and this can be a warning to others. I find even walking there are soft spots near the shoreline in places.

I wonder if alcohol was a factor.
What will the recovery cost?
Will there be Sgi insurance?
Will there be fines for polluting the lake?
Was it worth it?

I have heard that it's up to the vehicle owner to get the truck back to shore, then a tow truck can take it from there.  I don't think it would be a bad idea if the fine for polluting the lake was paid to the nearest village/resort/RM for the maintenance of the local boat launch and/or winter road.

The regional park near Govan always gets good ice faster than the rest of the lake because it is quite shallow. I will still be walking until there is over a foot of good hard ice.

Hoping to walk out this weekend nice and slow. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go? Hoping to go somewhere a little closer south than regional park unless the fishing has been descent there?

The guys up at big arm are always driving on before anyone else is walking, something tells me common sense isn't so common up that way.
There is 8 inches of ice at Hendersons and that isn't a guess or an estimate, which is more than enough to drive a vehicle on

Not more than enough barely enough if it is good clear ice.
For new, clear ice only
2" or less - STAY OFF
4" - Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" - Snowmobile or ATV
8" - 12" - Car or small pickup
12" - 15" - Medium truck

Note: these guidelines are for new, clear solid ice.

Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.

White ice or "snow ice" is only about half as strong as new clear ice. Double the above thickness guidelines when traveling on white ice.

After being in a vehicle that broke through I can say  insurance will cover everything so long as you go on the ice via a queens road...thats what the RCMP told us. This was about 10 years ago and things may have changed but havent heard anything.
Many roads in the winter in our province are actually ice roads, take for instance the Riverhurst crossing in winter, they cant deny insurance unless you are drunk or go on in a farmers field or any other access then a boat launch.

Cheers!!

You'll drive it on but you might not drive it off!!!  :woot: I would wait for at least 12" of ice to drive on! Unless you want to make the news like the two idiots on LML last week!!! :cookoo: Fish safe, youall. Just my 5 cents!!!

That's bad advice, especially for LML. I agree 8 inches is fine to drive a light vehicle on IF its consistent but LML is anything but.

I was up there a week and a half ago and they were driving on 4-5,  only deep inside the bay is it 8 Inches now. It was much less closer to the mouth of the bay and the lake is still downright dangerous even for walking in most places.

Lots of the mid section of the lake opened back up this weekend and lots of it is just freshly frozen, I had a near miss doing an ice check this weekend where the ice wen't from 3-4" to about 1" in a span of 5 feet. Currently looking to buy a 12 foot boat if anyone has one, lol.

LOL  Layne. that reminds me my wife is always saying the ONLY way she will ever go ice fishing is if she is in a boat.  I'm not pushing one of those around on the ice not even a 12 footer.    :)

I remember 3 maybe 4 years ago people where driving on pretty much everywhere south end of the lake and I went up to stone barn with the quad from Grandview took the shore all the way along till I got to stone    walk out drilled some holes in in 30 ft of water hit the throttle on the auger and blup I was through almost had a hard attack ... less then 3 inchs of ice. until the end of January and until there are trails and permanent shacks and until there are bigger trucks then you out there ...... don't take anyones advice and assume its fine

I agree with one post don't take anyones word regarding ice thickness, however I do put a lot of stock in what the locals around there do and running them down by saying they have no common sense is uncalled for.
