I was at Echo on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday this week. The bite was good for the first hour or two each day producing a few nice walleyes and a handful of perch as well as the odd tulibee. Everyday there were tons of pike swimming a few feet under us trying to steal our perch. I wouldnt be suprised if some were past the 40" mark. Otherwise the bite was on and off for the rest of the day after the morning bite. About 12-15 inches of ice and there have been plenty of trucks driving out on the west side behind the gas station and school.

I am going to be in Cupar for the next few days and was hoping to swing down to the lakes tomorow.  Coming down from Cupar is Echo prov park the easiest access?

Or Pasqua is just as easy if you dont mind grid roads! Just head south of town till the dead end and turn east!

Thanks mods you didn't even give me a chance this time.

Sounds like a good day Mr.Buckshot.

In the summer when the weather is permitting my neighbor and I at the lake will head out first thing 5am. Sure is a great surprise for our families when they wake up to walleye frying out on the deck.  On the good days when we can both catch a limit of good eaters we invite the other neighbours over for brunch and have a great morning fish fry.

Good day at pasqua today. Between 2 of us got 30 fish. 3 jumbos (13"+) and 1 eye of 2.5ish and a 2 pounder. Sat outside most of the day without using the flip thanks to the wife. She bought me the extreme ice armor suit and ultra gloves, toasty all day.

Was out on Echo on Sunday the 23rd.  slower day started with a couple tulibee, some small perch, a very small walleye, a very small pike, a broken rod, broken puppet minnow and a broken line with a glow and red dot PK flutterfish.....and then I caught these

The first one is my personal best 10.4lbs and the second is 6lbs both caught in the same hole about a half hour apart and both released.  Thanks to my showdown and 3/8 ounce glow with red dot PK flutterfish.  Turned out to be a GREAT DAY!http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/Smileys/default/grin.gif

Was out today on Pasqua for the day, my brother and uncle managed 2 decent 24" pike. Moved to Echo around 1:00 and walked out around Fort San, manged 4 good sized perch but I looked down the hole and saw some fish just swimming away from the lake. As we were leaving saw two guys taking pictures of us, our vehicle and our licence plate, I am not sure what that was about but it seemed a little weird. Anyone else ever have this happen to them as they were fishing?

Was out at pasqua today with a buddy manger 18 Burbot, 1 pike and and 1 small Walleye. It was crazy how many burbot we were getting most were under 4lbs but had one 9lber. Got to test out my new marcum camera and the lake floor was crawling with burbot and the odd pike.

At one point my buddy and I were both changing hooks and the camera showed a massive school of.Walleye pass through however we must have missed them/they were on a mission somewhere.

Didn't see a single perch on the cam, last year perch were all I could find.

I would have approached them and asked what their deal was.... I don't care who's who I don't like my vehicle or anything being photographed. You mind your business and I'll mind mind.

I don't fish pasqua that often but fort san is on echo lake and not pasqua, echo by fort san though has had a fair bit of burbot and we've had some good luck for perch there already, perch will only get better as the season goes on!

You go right through the town. You'll see a little park with swings and stuff, follow that road down to the water. At least that is where I drove on the last few years, I haven't yet this year.

been out the last 3 weekends on Echo, and right by the store we are having good luck with the Perch and Walleye. They are hitting the mud bugs with minnow heads and once we switched to eyes the bite was on! That being said bought a new auger the Jiffy 4g 10 inch and she's a real pain in the A** to start in the cold ???... any suggestions or information would be appreciated!

Some jiffys you have to hold the throttle all the way down with the choke on to get them started.

A few years back the 3hp jiffys were coming out of the box with carbs that needed adjusting.  Seeing as this is the new 4 stroke I don't know if you can adjust the carb the same way.  There are jiffy videos on youtube however that may solve your problem.

Thanks for the input fella's... The 4g has a choke on it, they say prime until there are no bubbles in the fuel line, throttle full open pull once and then choke to half and 4-5 pulls and it should start. I found on new years eve when we were out that if you prime it as recommended and full choke full throttle it started in 4 pulls... It reminds me of my old 97 Polaris XLT lol.... Once we got it running there was never an issue with re starting it, so I wonder if maybe it was just because it was brand new???

I was on Crooked on Sat. Bite was good all day, half dozen perch, biggest was 12", 2 nice Wally's 18 and 24", and lost count of the 2 to 3 lb pike, and one ugly dog that snapped my line and took a buckshot with him.  Flasher was showing fish at 2 to 4 ft off of bottom all day and except for the big walleye and the dog that's where I was catching them.

If you do, be careful past two seasons in the van we got stuck on the ice and that is NOT fun. Or would get on the ice, then not be able to get off it. So got a truck now and it's all good!

Was out on mission on Saturday caught about 20-25 fish in about three hours between two of us.  Mostly tiny eyes any ideas where the bigger eyes are?

Was out on echo yesterday and same thing. Lots of small eyes in about 30 ft and a few perch but no eaters. Tried in shallow and nothing there either. Still a beautiful day on the ice and got to play around with the new lx7.

We normally go to Echo or Pasqua, but I thought I would try out the hype at Collingwood and man that hype is for real. Started off slow but after a few lure changes and some patience I started nailing the perch, and by perch I mean Jumbo's, 12-14 inchers one after the other, never caught perch that big before so consistently, a couple decent Wally's but threw them back to get bigger... That was saturday, Sunday we were told that Little arm by Regina beach was good for walleye, sat there all morning caught on decent pike and a tulliby.... Back to to echo and Pasqua next weekend.... maybe a week day trip to Collingwood during the week! I am curious to see what it's like there when there are less fishermen out there... If anyone cares, I am having fantastic luck with the PK flutterbaits a quality lure that works very well!

WOW!!! thats a fantastic day on the ice for sure, especially in the chain lakes! I have fished so many places in northern SK but have NEVER been to Tobin, I really want to get up there this winter and give it a go! Would you be willing to give some guidance on where to go up there? And you gotta post a pic of that monster! I'll be back on Echo and Pasqua on the weekend, took this weekend to "explore" Saturday awesome, today terrible! Where are those big pike biting on Echo?

Mission by Lebret. Very Slow. In 12 ft of water, Sunday saw  1 small pike that wasnt interested at all. Monday saw 1 Large pike, nothing from him either, Tuesday (today) saw 2 lg pike and guess what? .... NOTHING. We spent the night last night and all I can say if thank goodness I brought Moose steak.... So my other question... where are the fishies. I can leave the shack and bring the snow bear out to the other lakes if the fish are biting plus how deep is everyone fishing in? thanks for replying... this is my first post

Out on Pasqua for the afternoon caught Burbot and pike from 1-430 the Burbot were suspended 8 ft from ice in 17 ft of water and so were the pike we prob caught total of 10 Burbot and 20 pike 430-530 caught a few eyes

Thats rare for Burbot to be suspended? Usually on the bottom.  Good to hear they are hitting, good eating! :)

yes it was very rare we did catch a couple off the bottom and couldn't believe the amount we caught suspended, we were using my flasher fish showed up 6 ft from the ice and 10 ft from the bottom we looked down our holes in my pop up and watched the pike and burbot as they took the hook. im surprised how clear the water is we could see our hooks just about all the way to the bottom 17ft and could see the fish clearly at 10-12 ft down. we cooked up our catch yesterday for supper and yes it was great....

Here's a silly question, I have been fishing the chain lakes and LML for almost 30 years and I have never caught a burbot, I have also only seen one that my grandpa caught before he passed in 1985.... What's the trick to hooking one of those ugly buggers?  ??? :icefish:

usually right on the bottom bounce it off the bottom or on a dead stick or tip up right on the bottom. but for the last few weeks now there hasn't really been a trick to it ive been catching a few every outing on anything any where. thats just the way i usally do it

Usually at sunset and after dark with a glow jig is really a huge hit with Burbot. But lately even a green jig wherever the flasher has shown a fish there has been a chance it is a Burbot whether on the bottom or even suspended... But go target them on the bottom with a salted minnow and you shouldn't have any problem I've been lucky in 15ft drop offs from 10ft-25ft fishin the middle at 15-20foot part of the drop.....

Thanks for the input fellow fishermen, I will give it a go this weekend and see what happens... I was using salted minnows on a green jog bouncing off the bottom but no such luck! I might have to extend my stay out on the lakes into the night time hours! Good luck out there!

Hi MJP1980,
Check out the burbot board on Ice Shanty for lots of tips and trick to catch those big salamanders.;D  ------> http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=38.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=38.0)

For myself I like to fish for them any time in the winter but they really get active during the spawn. Like the other have said find a point or ridge in the lake from late Feb. through March and you should find burbot. Drill a series of holes from the point off the edge into deep water and test them all until you find them. Sometimes you don't have to move too far to be on them.
When jigging for them, try stirring up the bottom and making a ruckus down there with a heavy jig, or spoon tipped with some sort of bait and have fun.

P.S - You probably already know this but, be careful around points any time in the winter, they can have some very thin ice. :P

Back to the fishing topic, a buddy of mine stopped on Pasqua yesterday around 4 in the beginning of the storm.  Fishing was awesome...in an hour and a half he had caught and released close to 30 fish. Said it was unreal, sometimes getting double headers.  Kept his limit in walleye and even a few jack.  Wish I had skipped out early like he did....

Yellow Pickerel is the same fish as Walleye... Sander Vitreus.  The first time that I ever heard them called Walleye was by some guys from the U.S... then a bunch of outfitters started using the term "Walleye" because the Yanks didn't know what a Pickerel was.

Chain Pickerel are indeed a part of the Pike family... Esox Niger.

If we really want to avoid any controversy, why don't we just all use the scientific names  :P

Yellow Pickerel / Walleye = Sander Vitreus
Northern Pike / "Jackfish" / "Gator" / "Slough Shark" = Esox Lucius
Yellow Perch = Perca flavescens
Burbot = Lota lota

Why fight about it? Why not just enjoy catching them because they all taste great!

Dont want to confuse anyone, fishing, its a lifetime learning experience, but if you google pickerel then images you will see that a pickerel looks alot like a pike. Yes Burbot and dogfish are the same in saskatchewan maybe the prairies even, Prob called because of the 1 barbel while cat fish have 2, but a dog fish is a shark not a burbot (ling cod). Although I do know what someone is talking about when they say dogfish. no worries im kinda wierd when it comes to language. Anyway whatever... they are all tasty  and another question... anyone eat the pike liver? walleye liver?

Not true, I am well under 65 and the term Pickerel is used extensively in Ontario to refer to Sander Vitreus aka Walleye, I have also heard it used in Alberta and Manitoba.

If I am referring to Esox niger, I would use the name Chain Pickerel... in Ontario, we just make the difference between the two.  When you say Pickerel, everyone knows that you are talking about Sander vitreus unless you specify "Chain Pikcerel", then they know that you mean Esox niger.

Does it really bother you that much that someone uses the term Pickerel in Saskatchewan?  If you know what they are talking about, why give them a hard time?  Knit picking about silly stuff like that is a great way to drive new people away from the sport

I think that the burbot and pike are both feeding on tullibees and other baitfish suspended in the mid water coulomb. I have seen pike doing this before ,but it's interesting for me that the burbot exhibited this behavior also.
I never knew that burbot would forage in the mid water like that. I have only seen them no more than 3-4 feet off the bottom. A person does learn something new every day. :woot:

Good fishing reports everyone.

Mission was on fire early this morning for me and my buddy. From 845-945 we landed about 25 fish a mix of good size perch and good Walleye 3 of which were 3-4lbs. Stayed steady throughout the day lots of lookers and no bites, picked up a bit towards the evening again but nothing like the morning.

All in all probably 50- 60ish  fish landed between us two, half of which were in our first hour. All the Walleye went back to swim another day and kept 10 solid perch. The main ticket for bites today was a gold flutterfish (not tipped with a thing in the morning) and a half a minnow. All in all a great day and found myself a spot on mission I think.

Caught a burbot late last night east side of mission, took the bear to the west side of mission and was slow but saw the most action near the river mouth at 20.5 ft.... got home and finally decided to try pike liver, well the taste was ok for me but the texture not so much or maybe it was the idea of it, my man loved it, said it tasted like lobster or crab, ate all of it. I kept it simple, fried it in butter salt pep and garlic pow... I think I opened another pandoras box cause besides frying up the egg sacks now i have to fry up the liver too, plus i do all the fish cleaning. Anyway going back to the west side of mission tomorrow.

Had another really solid day today on mission, had to move around a bit to get on some steady action but managed about 40 fish a mix of Walleye and perch. Biggest perch was 12" almost all were cookie cutter copies of one another 9-11 inches. Walleye were on the smaller side today with only a couple over 3 pounds.

Very nice day out, got a little gusty at times but that's Saskatchewan! All fish went back besides 3 perch that I reeled in a little too quickly. Is their any tricks to keep the bladder from filling with air other then bringing them in slowly, and if it does fill can the fish still be released and be fine?

I've been told that you can buy a thing at fishing stores that look like a large needle and that if you poke their air sack you can release them. I have never tried this myself though.

Fishing shallower is the only way to truely prevent that, even if they dont puke their air bladders doesent mean they will survive from thoses depths. Fizzing fish with a needle is a bandaid at best, lots of guys argue that thoses fish die as well.

There are a lot of people who think that poking the bulge in their mouth will help.  It doesn't.  What you are doing is putting a hole in the stomach as well as the air bladder.  Ask yourself, "would I live if some put a porportional hole in my stomach and lung?"

"The available evidence suggests that venting fish should not only be discouraged by fishery management agencies, but given the possibility that venting may adversely affect survival of fish captured from deep water, this practice should be prohibited, rather than required by regulation."
*Gene R. Wilde, professor of fish ecology at the Dept of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University.*

He has compiled 17 studies that assessed the potential benefits of venting in 21 fish species (both marine and freshwater). He found the technique as practiced by sportsfishermen and biologists alike, to hold little benefit to the fish.

Thanks for the info guys. Ya that was me with the red pop-up and a black Explorer. My explorer made it on and off fine with 4X4 and there are some good paths still at the west end of Mission. I went off the paths a bit and still didn't have any problems. There is a bit of drifting but nothing too intense.

Edit: west side of echo, misread but I know behind the gas station getting on was a little rough even a week or two ago.

Pasqua at the east end by the campground there is plenty of room to park however it is a bit of a walk to get to greater water depths. If your going for Jack this may not be an issue. Other then that the North side of the lake by Lutherland is likely not a bad walk or parking further west by the Wambach launch, however this is quite a steep slope leading down to the lake so I wouldn't reccomend driving down it if you don't have a vehichle that can get back up.

I may head out tomorrow not sure if I will hit pasqua or mission but if you see a black explorer and a red quickfish 3 pop up feel free to come by, ill likely be fishing solo.

Camp tawasi you can park on the west side of the old camp. There's a spot to drive down by the old bunks with lots of room to park. It can be hit or miss there but usually can get into Cisco non stop if you fish 25+ft

Made it out to fort San today and did ok, bunch of perch and a few pike. Hopefully Saturday I will be on Pasqua to try to get my 3 year old his first fish

Thanks for the info Big Burk, Roughrider24 & daniels papa. :)

My main species i am usually looking for is burbot and pike, but I am happy with any species that's willing to bite that day, even the ciscos / tullibees are fine by me. ;D

When I look at Pasqua Lake I see it's divided up into 3-4 chunks separated by points. I know the first main part running W to E is the deepest part but I was wondering about the other 2 -3 shallow areas up to Skinners marsh. Do any of you ever fish in them, if so what do you find?
I am guessing probably pike, but that area should have other fish species also. :-\

Good luck Big Burk, I hope the little guy lands a lunker.

I caught a walleye out at Echo last year that had the same thing. I asked around too, to see if anybody had seen that before. Nobody really knew anything so I checked the good ol' Internet. From what I could find the growths are caused from stress when they are or about to spawn. Also said that they were ok to eat and nothing was really wrong with them. I still didn't eat the fish, ended up putting him back.

There were at least 100 growths on it! I know I wouldn't be eating it no matter how hungry I was! :woot: caught about 20 perch and 2 walleye yesterday! All of them were too small , threw them all back!
Title: Re: Qu'Apelle Lakes
Post by: Dee Bj on Jan 19, 2013, 02:15 PM
The growths are actually caused by a virus that affects many freshwater species in our lakes. The virus is transmitted by direct contact to other fish (which is why we are seeing it more now that the spawn is coming and fish are hanging out together) and through the water when the tumors fall off. THIS VIRUS IS NOT ZOONOTIC!!  (Does not affect mammals) and DOES NO harm the fish in any way. Most tumors will fall off naturally by themselves after the spawn and leave a small scar. As an AHT (animal health technologist) I was curious, did some "exploratory cleaning" and found that the tumors are stictly superficial (on the skin only) and do not penetrate to the underlying tissues. If you can get over the rather "unappetizing" look of the fish, just clean as normal and enjoy your catch!  ;)

Hi bite-me 7.
I have seen those bumps on some walleye caught through the ice on ice fishing tv shows.
I also wondered what they were so I looked them up and here is what I found. Just click this link for the a dagnosis ---->  http://fishandboat.com/images/pages/qa/fish/walleye_tumors.htm

Even though they say it's safe, for myself, I would not eat any fish that had warts, bumps or tumors or parsites on or in it. :P

Was at mission today and made out pretty good about 15 perch and 5 Walleye the bite was good in the morning and got slower as the day progressed. Lots of lookers on the camera must have tried 30 different hooks. Way too cold to move around so spent the entire day in the pop up with the heater on. Ran out of propane at 430 so packed up. My explorer didn't have any issues on the lake, was drifting a bit but nothing too crazy.

i'm seeing alot of people having trouble and hearing of lots of people having trouble catching lots of fish or keeper perch and walleye especially, i am not suprised because i herd there was lots of summer kill with low oxygen levels in the lake this year. Though myself and my buddies are doing great when we go out together, but we have a flasher. yesterday limited with walleye and released a dozen or so, also released a few burbot, a pile of tullibee and a half dozen pike all from two holes. i have a buddy with a shack on echo that is catching 4 -6 fish (variety) everytime he goes out , usually no walleye, couple perch, and burbot close to dark not much else. im finding  gotta be deeeeeep this year, over 30 ft seems to be key, even without a flasher fished near two other guys that were also deep they caught quite a few walleye also, they had no flasher but deep seems key

Post by: Roughrider24 on Jan 26, 2013, 05:44 PM
Went by the ski hill was catching lots of perch 9-10 inches we wanted some big Walleye so went to a couple spots on echo fished 35-40ft water caught lots of small guys then my buddy hooked a solid 26.5 inch Walleye. But when we looked at it half its mouth was mangled but guess it was still hungry :P. After that we were catching better sized fish but the 26.5 incher was the fish of the day.

Didn't keep any fish today but was a perfect day for moving around and finding fish.

Boy did we have a good day on Pasqua. Fished shallow and found them. Pike fishing was great had flags flying all day, fish caught were in the 3-10lb range and this pig I got my buddy on. Second year in a row he has gotten a new PB pike on my tip ups I set for him. Walleye were small, but caught a few. Got into some jumbo perch for a while and caught a few burbot. Great day of fishing hopefully tomorrow is as good!
Didn't have a scale and tape was in my other truck so no weight or measurement on it, but I have large hands if it does the pictures any justice.

My shack is on sandy beach and we weren't having much luck until we moved the shack to deeper water.  After moving the shack on Sunday at around 1030, we pulled up 4 pikes, 3 tulibees, 2 walleyes (1 spit the hook just ask was going to grab it out the hole), and a small perch. Fished till 1230ish then had to run.  Best afternoon on sandy beach in a few weeks. My dads cousin has his shack there too and they are in shallower water and have had some good weekends

A notice to anyone fishing the east end of echo, the access by pctc is pretty blown in and will take one or two more guys getting stuck and shovelling it out before its good again. Had to go pull my younger brother out tonight, he was stuck right at shore trying to get onto lake. He's lucky I live ten minutes away its a cold one out there tonight!

Also today a lot of trucks got stuck at the boat launch... At west ketepewa in 25 ft catching jumbo pearch.. not limits but great size.

I'm heading out tomorrow with a buddy we may try our spot on echo closer to the west end. Also curious about pasqua as I haven't been out there for a while. Mission and echo have been stealing my attention this year which is contrary to previous years where I stick to pasqua.

Tried stir fry of fresh pike liver. It is much tastier than frozen chicken liver. Maybe it is the freezing that makes the difference.

There is a lot of snow out there so if you see someone stuck it only takes you 5 min to help them out unless they drove a car on then I think it's their own fault and need to learn a lesson, so don't help them right away let them work for it.

My buddy and I were fishing just west of the hatchery, slow day and we weren't in moving around mode due to previous nights activities at festive-ale. Probably managed around 15 fish combined, small Walleye, small perch and tullibee.

Might try pasqua tomorrow I bought a single man Frabill commando max for $200.00 regular $500.00. Complete pain in arse to assemble but looks like a pretty good shelter.

as long as you have a 4x4 you are good to go, i had no prob anyways

Post by: Roughrider24 on Feb 04, 2013, 07:04 PM
Fished east end of pasqua today access was good if you have anything with 4X4 there's a good main path packed from theweekend.

Fishing was good jumbo perch biting all day, lots of big jack on the camera scaring away my perch. Caught 3 Burbot also scaring away my perch, one big bugger was trying to eat my camera which I ended up catching.

Walleye were easily spooked all day up until 4 and would only hit my deadstick. At 4pm the Walleye changed moods and became aggressive biting my 5 of diamonds.

I'm liking my new Frabill Commando Max seems like a good shelter I just got to figure something out for the Auger/mounting my heater for early/late season when I'm forced to walk out.

Hey all!
I am new to Sask, living in Grenfell, and looking for some decent fishing spots. I just moved out here from Calgary, where I met alot of good folk through the outdoorsmen forum.
I have been on Crooked, but with only having a minivan I am walking on only.  Is there anywhere at Pasqua where a guy and a kid can walk on and get into some fish?  We have all the needed gear.
We are thinking of getting out on Sat.
Would a minivan make it out?
HA, I guess I am mainly looking for some tips to get into some perch and burbs.

Thanks!!
Ofcourse, if someone is willing to take a guy out, I could leave my daughter behind for a trip.  I am always looking to make new friends.

Lots of Pike and even a HOG 8.5 Wally!( manage about 3 per trip!)  Burbot are plentiful but are cruisin and chasing the entire water column! We are at Indian Point and access is a bit tricky. Lots of drifting so hoping some weekdayers may have packed it downs some. Some big drifts so DRIVE CAREFULLY! We are in a big 1/2 ton 4x4 and we have been stuck! (Thank God for good ppl!) If you see the Sugar Shack..,.stop in and say HI! Happy Fishing!  :)

Hey Fishbrain, I also only have a van and have been able to get on west end of Echo as long as you stay on trails.  You can walk on at Lutheren Point (Pasqua).  How has the fishing been at Crooked? Not sure how access is at Fort San on Echo, but heading there tommorow.May be walking on!

Thanks Killem!  Me and a little one are going to head over to Indian point and see what we can put on the ice there.  It keeps the wife happy if I dont take a kid to a lake I have not been to yet, lol.
Happy wife=happy life and more fishing time

What a nice day on Pasqua caught some fish and caught some rays. Watched a lad catch his biggest eye a7#  he put it back. When we left my buddy broke through before we could get out he and his buddy were over to push us out. I hope he catches a ten pound eye next time nice lads. The type of people I want to meet on the ice. :)

Fished Fort San in the morning and didn't have much luck. Moved and bit and found some decent perch, then the auger decided to be dumb and the muffler fell off and a bunch of plastic was melted. After that, went in town to get some parts then went to Pasqua, caught 25 fish in 1.5 hours average 5 lbs plus! But did I mention they were tulibees! The raccoon are going to hate us this spring when we use them for trap bait!

Tried deeper water than we usually fish today and will be hitting the shallow water next time. Only a dozen small walleye and first time of the year with no flags on the tip ups.

Very slow two days it's been from the normal 40+ plus fish only caught about half that in two day total rather disappointing with the warm weather not needing to be in the pop up

I was actually thinking trying shallower next time as well. I feel like up until now I've been chasing fish deeper and deeper with success but as of the last couple times feel like I lost what  depth to find them at consistently. Rather than waiting for schools or the odd fishi gotta explore some new spots and try the different depths.

Grenfell beach for the most part, was on Indian point on the weekend and didn't fair any better.  Going to try the point again here this weekend.  I have heard of some catching but most people say it has been a slow year.  I am dieing to get into some perch.
My biggest issue is a hand auger, burn all your steam real quick when you are trying to do some hole hopping. lol
I will say, I am in love with these PK lures tho.
Being new I am sure doesn't help, having to learn a lake, depths.  Next purchase is a new auger.
No matter tho, even a day without catching is better than a day not on the ice!

Just spoke to Mrs. ME and I think I am going to head down to Indian point tomorrow morning after dropping the littles off at school.  If you are down there, just look for the bearded guy, in the brown jacket walking on with the orange sled.  Feel free to say hello.

4x4 with decent tires you should have no problems on the lake, don't know how bad the access is but bring a shovel or two just in case, some of the drifts in the middle of the lake were starting to get deep as well

Made it out today, ventured out to the south side of the lake and was a great day with nobody else even attempting to cross. Had to break trail a few km and shovel out once, also my shift linkage went on my F150 so changing gears was a task, having to crawl under the truck and do it by hand wasn't fun but we made it to our spot after working the truck pretty good. Only one burbot today but the pike fishing was unreal, biggest was only a 10lber but having a flag or hit on the rod every few minutes made up for the lack in size. Took the whole family out, myself, my fiancé, my son and our two dogs and had a great day on the lake even with the temps not being as nice as yesterday.

There are way better places than standing buff @ echo. I used to fish the fort religiously when I was younger and this time of year I would be getting as far away from the crowds as possible and work structure/shelves until I located fish. Its probably going to take a couple weekends of fooling around but once you find them you're good to go and you can fish in peace. You'd be surprised how shallow you can find fish this time of year as well.

X2 on the shallows. We usually don't fish any deeper than 20ft at most early winter and set up 5-15ft usually once February rolls around. Haven't gotten skunked yet this year but came close the two times we fished deeper water.

If your going anywhere on the south side on the west end you will need good tires on your 4x4. All this wind this week wouldn't of helped any either. I'm heading out tomorrow there and won't be surprised if I need to shovel again, I have 35" very aggressive mud tires with a 2" lift and had some struggles last weekend. North side of the lake isn't nearly as bad

I fished east pasqua in front the campground but had to stick to the trails for the most part. My explorer has poor clearance/no lift and crap all seasons. I barely strayed from the trail and ended up having to dig out once. Think I seen Mrbuckshot cruising down the south side with ease :P. I just graduated university and think a new truck is in the plans ASAP.

Didn't get away from the shacks and to some places I would have liked, but the Perch and jack were biting pretty much all day. Probably pulled in 40 perch all fairly good size and the jacks were hungry attacking any lure I threw down striking throughout the water column. At times I felt like they were chillin right below the ice, biggest was probably 9-10lbs and like a previous poster stated their teeth are missing/nubs? Never really paid attention to this in the past kind of weird.

Walleye seemed spooked easily caught a few smaller ones and had a couple of nice ones come right up to my bait only to turn me down, maybe they became more aggressive in the evening. Anyways a nice day out, only thing that could make it better is if my vehichle had some guts to make exploring possible.

I'm curious as well, we mainly target pike and walleye on these lakes, I haven't noticed anything unusual this year and we have caught dozens of pike from small hammer handles to 25lbs this winter. The odd pike will be missing teeth, scars from previous anglers ripping hooks out without any concern for the fish and the odd deformity, but this is normal for any species.
Title: Re: Qu'Apelle Lakes
Post by: Roughrider24 on Feb 23, 2013, 12:32 AM
I Didn't take any pictures and to be honest maybe it was just a few of the pike with the lack of teeth/round nubs. But I did notice what the other poster was talking about. Wasn't the typical toothy pike I was used to seeing, still wasn't putting any hands in mouths but there def looked like literally, teeth forming, didn't notice red gums or anything just lack of pointy teeth.

If I go out this weekend again ill try to take some pictures if I notocr it. Maybe haven't been paying attention in the past or just seeing what I wanna see since reading the teething post. :P

i was curious to then i asked my dad and some of the old timers and they said this is the time of year they loose there teeth. i thought maybe it was a myth but the last couple times i was out i was looking out the pike and have noticed a few less teeth in there mouth and it looked like some new ones coming. i am very curious on this and if anyone has more to share i would like to here about it

How's access out around Fort San? Is it a 1 truck could go across the lake or a 2 truck pulling another one out when you get stuck? Heading out with the entire family this weekend!

Any one see the idiot on the ice at Lutherland yesterday? He was pulling a 20 ft.+ enclosed trailer! When he left he tryed to go up the access, got stuck and tried to back down and the trailer jack knifed! Might have made it if he didn't have his accelarator floored all the time! :cookoo:He then had to wait for a tow truck and no one else could get off the ice! We ended up going all the way to the West end!!! :%$#!:

I've still found the little black specs in many of the perch but they are less abundant. Last winter every perch I kept had them and alot more in comparison to this year. If there's a few I just pick them out if not eat them and don't notice a thing :p

Every perch that I have caught from Crooked over the last 5 years has had black spots. Some are loaded with them and some have only a few.
Title: Re: Qu'Apelle Lakes
Post by: dempster123 on Mar 02, 2013, 12:37 AM
so if every perch you have caught has them then why keep any? why not release them so they can breed and feed the big fish so they grow faster? I'm saying this because  why waste the fish because i was told by a conservation officer when i lived in manitoba to not eat them at all, i didn't get a great reason but he said to simply not eat them if they have any parasites, to not waste our time picking them out because the fish still may have the parasite in the meat and you may not be able to see it?

Why not keep the fish? Tastes good to me with the added bonus of escargot haha. From what I've heard, read, and the fact I've never gotten sick/am still living and breathing, every now and then ill keep some perch black specs or not. Like I said this year they are still in the perch but less abundant but honestly I don't notice a thing and have no reason to believe I'm at risk for eating a few perch with black specs here and there.

Anyhow hoping to get out this weekend maybe tango with some pike on the tip ups for fun and if not jig up those no good horrible tasting perch everyone should toss back ;)

Never said I kept all of them. Black spots are harmless to human consumption, so no worries eating the fish. Manitoba conservation should look up the facts on Black Spots.

Of the perch we cut last night, not quite half of them have black spot, and those that did, have very little.
I have my limit now so I dont plan on keeping anymore unless they are big and we have eaten some.

Was out March 2 on Echo and fished along the south shore. Wife and I caught 10 perch, 6 pike, 2 tulibee, 2 walleye and 1 burbot in 3.5 hours. Excellent day with no wind, sun and about +2 C. Five of the pike were caught with smelts on tip-ups. They were 4-8 lbs. We need more days with this kind of weather and a good fish bite.

What was the other fish species you caught?

Speaking of burbot, would B-Say-Tah Point be the main spawning area for burbot at Echo or do they use the other points more? ???

Katepwa today. Real quiet til about 1. The perch started biting out deeper and the pike were hitting tip-ups right til 5 when we left. Best of the day was a 16 lb pike. No walleye to be seen. No real jumbo perch but a few 10"ers.

Was out on Katepwa yesterday near Taylor beach.  Started in about 10-12 feet of water.  Got a couple pike then went out to about 40 feet of water.  Caught 15 nice perch and a 2 lbs Walleye.  If you are gonna go that way make sure you have 4 wheel drive and a shovel.  Even on the trail it was hard going as the snow is getting real soft.  Have a great last 3 weeks of fishing everyone  ;)

Fished Pasqua today for the first time our group caught Perch pike Walleye and quite a few Tullibee. Saw some nice Walleye on the camera and also a huge Burbot. The water looked a little murky and stuff floating by. There must be some current.
It was a great day anyway fishing a new lake and meeting some new people.
Early in the day the Genz worm with maggots and a mealworm was working. later it was pk fluterfish(red dot glow) with a perch eye and mealworm.  My buddy was using a silver PK and a silver pimple with eyes and mealworms.
We fished from 8 feet to 18 with most of the fish caught  in 8 to ten foot depths.

Katepwa yesterday. Got out fished by the tip-ups!! Pike, pike and more pike. Caught 8 on the tip ups and lost 2 VERY large fish at the hole. We couldn't get the heads maneuvered right and finally after letting off a little tension they got off. Lost another big fish on a break off,but not before i got rope burn from the tip up line. Fun though. Got a nice burbot in 30 fow and even got 3 pike on the bottom in 25-30 fow. One perch all day and a few very soft nibbles. I think they are in hiding because of all the gators!

And our other spot, we walked on in non-posted land and on our way back a guy was taking pictures of our vehicle and us then called the police because apparently he didn't want us walking there? We went out on Echo at Ba Say Tah point. There were two sets of tracks that got us far enough out to fish but to break trail you'd need a tank to get anywhere. There is a lot of snow and drifts, but as far as getting on it was fine. Fishing was pretty slow, lots of lookers. Only managed 5 all day.

We drove on at Bah Say Ta point today. It wasn't too bad if you stuck to the tracks. Fishing sucked but it was nice to get out one last time.

I was out on mission yesterday, just me and one guy on a sled and that was it. Oh yeah and I walked on, even a lifted 1 ton would not break trail down that lake.

Burnout spawn is behind this year but still a beautiful day on the lake with the hound.

Hey there folks,
I was wondering if there is any driving access to any of the lakes around the fort. I have a broken ankle and haven't been able to go fishing for a month (so crapty).. the leg is feeling better and desperately want to go fishin one more time but there is no way I can walk a mile through snow with the cast.
If there is access let me know.
I normally fish mission lake.
thanks!

Yeah it is rutted up and that crosses private land. A lot of snow out there and really bad ruts. Even in a lifted 1 ton I doubt you could make it too far having to break new trail. So unless you have a skidoo or quad you'll be walking out there!
