Title: Chumming
Post by: Lv2hunt on Jan 29, 2020, 06:49 PM
Just wondering how many guys chum and if it's worth the trouble also what do you think works best I used to use dog food years ago for hornpout and did great wondering how well it works for cusk or Lakers I know they're pigs and will eat anything.

I Chum for Lakers all the time. I save all my dead shiners in a ziplock heavy salt and some garlic powder. Dice a few up and send it down the hole.

Chum, sardines old shiner smelt. A lot of times I fill the bag of dead smelt with water shake it around give them a squeeze and then just pour the liquid down the hole it creates a wicked cloud. That way you're not actually feeding them.  Depends what you're fishing for, I do everything but rainbows.

Fish food works good as those flakes waterlog and sink it discourses scent and creates visuals and brings everything from the food chain in starting from bottom to top

I fish a two trap lake and it bores me to death. So I set one trap then drill more holes and chum them. I hop from hole with the Vex if there's red lines on bottom start jigging  usually if  there in the chum there active     I live next to a pond full of fall fish I freeze a bunch for Laker fishing

Never have in the winter but summer nights looking for pouts a can of cheap gravy style dog food does well to bring them in.

Alot of good info guys. I have used the gravy style dog food trick before works great. I was thinking of buying one of those chum pots not sure if it's a waste of money. Sounds like might be just as well off chumming the hole and letting it sink. Alot like egging holes for bows thanks guys!!

Agreed, I hate putting new pretty fletchings on and then defacing them by having to write on them with a fine point sharpie.

Then what if you shot and say missed, or had a pass through and couldn’t recover the arrow and then someone else finds it and does something stupid with it? I just don’t get it

Yeah. It does, and it doesn’t. It doesn’t affect me because from the back of my land I can see NH so I just hop the river. We also only get 1 deer tag so shoot a deer any season any way and you are DONE. So I just strictly Bow hunt NH and I’ll fill my Maine rifle tag on a Saturday or something. I like how in my own selfish way it makes it so the deer get far less pressure because many work saturdays as well and could only hunt weekends so they don’t get out much to shoot tomorrow’s giants today lol.

Stop at the supermarket and get oatmeal, its cheaper. Initially it floats then just stir the water in the hole and it starts to sink real slow. Makes a nice chum line. Great if your jigging
works great for everything.  ;)

I've used white perch eyes and little white perch belly fillets to tip bucktails and they work well. Also looking to see if we still have that fish food from when my kids had goldfish

I’ve always liked doing it to whatever extend I can. Anytime I have live cutting suckers I always break them down in close proximity to some holes. I particularly like to prime a Laker hole by simply rinsing my blade off in the water water as I scale the sucker.  Even biggish shiners yeild a lot of scales when you run a blade against them end to end. Plenty of visual cascading down and catching light. Scent. Without giving anything a free dinner. I’ll dump some bits too, but usually try to cut it real small. Save guts and bigger messes for Cusk holes when I’m walking away for the night.

Alright, because I like you guys I will tell you what i like to do.  I buy smelt at the grocery store and put them through the blender.  Occasionally, I have mixed sea salt and garlic to experiment as well as Anise. Now all I'm saying is DON'T USE YOUR WIFE'S NEW NINJA BLENDER.  Use her old blender, just trust me on this one.....  You get all the attractant with giving them a free meal.  Keep a little on the side to dip your lure in it too.
Title: Re: Chumming
Post by: Mr.Harry on Jan 31, 2020, 08:10 PM
It took me so long to put together why the Anise/licorice flavor thing is so big across so many species - it smells just like a FRESH bait slick. Yep, took me about 30 years of fishing before my nose caught that.

So do you drop some black licorice whips or jelly beans in that blender? Or do you reach for the Star Anise seed itself?

Many states have "No hunting" on Sundays.

Here in MA I get to enjoy the sounds of hunters honing their skills at local shooting ranges near where I fish.
It's one of those sounds I look forward to hear, mainly because it reminds me of people exercising their rights to bear arms!
(OH, and it tends to mean they will be better, safer hunters in the end.)

Yesterday, I noticed a definite uptick in strikes after I threw the leftover milk from my thermos (for my coffee) in the hole where my deadstick was - - I caught four pickerel in relatively short order out of that hole (which had not had a strike for at least the past hour) before the milk dissipated and the water in the hole cleared up again.

this is a recipe for chum that  use for many years.. I don't use it much any more, because I don't jig as much as I used to …

I mix equal parts gold fish flakes, oat meal ( Quaker rolled oats) moisten into a sticky doe with grape soda ( strawberry works too, no citris), a few drops of oil of anise completes the concoction... I've used it in a chum pot for just about everything that swims in salt water  ( except sharks)..  and in fresh water ( ice fishing ) it goes in a a small chum pot and is left just below the ice, as the mixture melts away it leaves a trail if mixed scents that are pretty good fish attractor...

when I had my hard side on the Swampscott river, I caught a lot of smelt using that mixture,,
a fair amount of Winni lakers fell for it too...

it also is a heck of a good carp bait..

back in my youth, there was a brook that ran through the woods behind my Aunts house in Andover Mass,it was spring fed and started in the hills and ran into fish brook, which runs into the Merrimack, that brook had native brookies, I don't know if anyone else on the planet even knew it, I use to catch them all summer, one fall I got several that had distended bellies.. I kept one ( I never kept them because they were natives)to see what was up with their guts, darn thing was full of grapes... there were wild grapes ( a great deer hunting spot) that grew on the trees over head... evidently these fish were eating grapes, I never saw it again but I never forgot it either.

I’ve spent countless hours doing the same. I’ve been fortunate to never live in a place that I couldn’t walk to the river in the yard. I’ve lived on the Bellamy, the cocheco, the isinglas, and the Salmon Falls. Something about Rivers does something for me that waterbodies never can or will. I prefer Rivers when fishing and think if you can master those it makes bodies of water a breeze, funny how the animals gravitate to them as well. It’s something about how it’s just everchanging and brings new opportunities each second that I love

There are probably as many recipes for chum mix as there are anglers who use chum when fishing.
I do prefer to chum when possible and legal, but it's not always possible.

I found some cheap stinky chum at Family Dollar...$1 can of sardines (in brine). Each can has 2 sardines, which look better suited as cat food than human food, but they fall apart quite easily, and spread out nicely when dropped down a hole.

The only down side is that if you fish from that same hole your line will pick up and HOLD that stink!!!!

Haha, he found it in the men's room, I hope.

I'm making some for Pike fishing next weekend.  So far I have canned Mackerel, canned tuna (in oil), anchovies (in oil) and whatever is dead in my bait bucket.  Will toss those in a blender & hold my nose.  Bought some small plastic containers like used for jello shots.  Will fill a bunch of those, cover & throw in the freezer.

I bought a cylinder-shaped wire bird feeder to place a few of the cubes in.  Tie the feeder to a string & drop it down the hole in the middle of my baits.

I'm sure if some of the "special sauce" Tim found was added it could increase the attraction but I won't be looking too hard for any.
