First time for everything!
« on: Feb 05, 2013, 09:09 PM »
After missing out on icefishing for the last 2 weeks, (flu for 1 week) I was chomping at the bit to finally wet a line. I could not get out until the afternoon due to my promise to my Grandson to take his dog to his school for him at 9:30am for his first "Pet Day".
Drove on the Red (easy going) and headed to my favourite spot (N 50* 32.897 W 96" 12.549  ;) ;D )
Not too many people out........very quiet out there. Got out of my truck, proceeded to the back of my truck and woosh down I went almost up to my knee....fell forward face down in the snow......hand jammed into some jagged ice from an old hole  ::) There were plenty of frozen over holes around but this one (a reduced 10 incher) was completely covered flat with snow and it was not frozen over.  >:( Legs are not meant to bend that way  :P
Boot was jammed good.....I guess trying to get it out while prone on the ice was not working  ::)
Always funny when you see someone else do this but from now on, I will never laugh again  ;D
(note to self....pack extra socks).

I sucked it up and FISHED hard  ;D

Not much passing through today. Managed to hook a eater walleye that chased my LT. One bite....1 fish........pitiful  ::)

IT WAS DEAD ON THE RED......
Endured 3 hours of monotony then went home battered but NOT beaten!
I'll be wearing my BIG bearpaw snowshoes next time I walk around some old swiss cheese ice @)

That's a real bummer. You could have easily broken a bone or torn your ACL. Lucky all you have is a scrape and hurt feelings!

Those coordinates point to a green, seemingly wooded area south of Pine Falls. Should be no ice holes there.  ;)

On days with blowing snow 10" holes are easy to step in. Over the years I would say it is around 10 to 1 for 10" versus 8" holes I have  stepped in. Many times I have fished with a wet boot. That is why I consider boots good to at least -70C a must. If you want to save money on equipment, save it elsewhere.

Ouch!  I did that on whitemouth years ago, and I was running towards my dead stick, 20 cm of fresh snow the night before!  I thinks my leg bone as sore for over a year!

Geez Ron! You've had the worst luck in the past year or so!  Thankfully these incidents have had good endings!

Makes a big difference imo especially if you're using a propane heater because it doesn't sweat and start dripping  @)

But it wasn't my own 10 inch hole  ::)....that would have been funny  ;D
I just need to put my BIG boots on before walking around a minefield of old holes....then I'll be safer @)

Geez Ron, usually it's the youngsters that mill around hap-hazardly and end up putting a premature end to the day in that manner ;D Glad ya didn't break anything there Bud!  :) Talk with you soon.
